10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21 1897 A 600D YEAR FOR GRAPES Prospects for Large Vint- ages in All Parts of the State. Reports Show a Good Quality of Fruit and Freedom From Disease. An Industry That Is Synonymous With the Name of California in the East and Abroad. There is a feeling of satisfaction among wine-growers all over the State because ol the magnificent crop prospects for the vear. It is a difficult task to determine just what the crop will be this year, but the most conservative estimates place it far hicher than the usual output. The most careful estimate yet promul- gated was compiled a few weeks ago by the Wine and Spirit Review of this city, and the figures show a large yield all over the country. The following questions ‘were propounded to growers all over the State, and the replies from all sections show a most favorable outlook: Is the wine grape crop in your section good, bad or indifferent ? Has it been affected by disease or heat to any extent? 1fso what? What is the expecied average yield per acre in tons? What is the prospect as to quality? What prices are being paid for grapes? Have the cellars sufficient cooperage to handle the crops? Replies have already been received from scores of large vineyaraists all over the State, and all are encouraging. Good cheer comes from the tollowing counties in psrticular: Sonoma, Napa, Contra Costa, Alameda, Sauta Clara, San Joaquin and Fresno. The tenor of all the letiers is favorable, and there is a general feeling that the importance of the wine industry is now such sas to attract general attention all over the United States. It is believed that the revival of good times in the East is such as to enable thousands of former consumers of wine who have been forced to quit using it to begin again, thereby making a demand for the California product. With all the good news about crops the question of prices is largely unsettled. Tor example, in the Napa Valley $10 per ton is being offered, and $1 per ton more for each cent the wine sells for over 10 cents per gallon. In the Livermore Val- ley big prices have been paid for the choicest varieties, but the commoner grades will probably go at the same figure as elsewhere. The importance of the grape crop to the people ot the State cannot be fully uner- stood until there is a review of the figures, The subjoined tables show the shipments for July and August. The total exports of California wine by sea and rail in July were as follows: Byaen. ..o By rail overlan Total.. The exports of California wines by sea in Augusi were as follows: Cases. Ga! To New York 17 St. Louis. . Cineinngti Central America.... 244 Mexico = 3 Hawal 3 76 20,423 British Columbia.. 14 820 Japan ana Chin 95 2,689 Great Britain. 5,000 Germany . Other European. . Tahiti.. 3101 All other foréign.. 598 Totai.. 244,155 $77,029 Thus it will readily be seen that the vintage everywhere. reported is of good volume, and there is every prospect that the Eastern demand will be larger than last vear. Those who have been inter- ested in advancing the cause of Califor- nia wines in the East say that 1t is the general experience that when people nse the product for a while they ask for nothing else. Grape-growing and wine- making have become so identified with this State that they are almost synony- mous with the name California. In every part of the East inquirers for California lands ask whether they are fit for the growing of grapes, and each year adds to the interest in the industry. For these and other reasons vineyardists feel en- couraged over the outlook fer good vint- age. WILL EXAMINE THE WATER, The Board of Health Preparing to Ex- amine Spring Valley Reservoirs. On Saturday next samples of water from each of the reservoirs of the Sprine Valley Company will be taken by the Board of Health for the purpose of bacteriological and chemical examination. This action was decided on because of the many complaints that have recentiy reached the Health Office regarding the quality of the water that is being furnished the people of this city. The party that will collect the s: mples will consist of Heaith Officer O’Brien, Bacteriologist Spencer, Chemist Wenzel and an inspector, —————— The Bell Case.
