10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14, 189T -———————————————————————— e e OFF FOR THE ISLANDS. Departure of Cyclers Sharick, Jones, Whitman and “Trilby” Fowler. They Will Appear at the Opening of the Cyclomere Track at Honolulu. The opening of the new cycle racing track at Honolulu next month has at- tracted the attention of California ridar_-, and three of the most prominent will leave for there this afternoon om She steamer Moana, accompaniea by a trick rider. Those who will go are George Sharick 6f Tacoma, champion of the Pa- citic Coast; Allan N. Jones, the Olympic Club crack, and Dan E. Whitman of Los Angeles, the speediest professional of the south. Harry Fowler, champion trick rider of the co will accompany them. Charles 8. Desky, owner of the new Cyclomere Park at Honolulu, has been here s fortnight arranging to take down some good men for the opening of the track, and the above selections were made by him after seeing the men perform at the Olympic meet at the Velodrome on Octo- ber 3. Desky also made a proposition to Ziegler, but the latter has but just recov- ered from his Seattie injuries and does not want to ride again this season. x The Cvclomere track at Honolulu is three laps to the mile, scientifically con- structed, and the surface is of decomposed coral, the finish being somewhat similar to cement. Mr. Desky says that the people there are very enthusiastic over cycle racing, and at previous meets heid on a poor track and with inferior accom- modations for the people the attendance has besn immense. With the improved conditions and the advent of the Cali- fornia cracks he expects to reap a harvest from the venture. He offers good purses and has paid the fares of the men both ways in advance and Lheir living expenses for six weeks, so that they hayve little to | wish for. The races at the islands will be con- ducted under special sanction from the Caiifornia Associated Cycling Clubs, which was necessary before the racing board wou!d let the men go from here. There will be no professivnal events at the Vallejo meet next Sunday, as the de- parture of Snarick, Jones and Whitman and Ziegler's retirement leave very few of the cracks available. The amateurraces will be equally as interesting, however, and a big crowd will go up from here on the boat that leaves Mission pier 1at 10:30 A M. Tne arrangements for the annual the- ater party of the associated clubs are about completed. It will be held at the Tivoli on Thursday evening, November 1L e HOTEL ARRIVALS.
