8 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, MONDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1897 HONORING LINCOL'S MEMORY Preparing for a Grand National Celebration Next Year. THE MONUMENT LEAGUE AT WORK. Trying to Make a Special Day for the Martyred President. SCHOOLS OF THE LAND INTERESTED. Cordial Letters of Indorsement Received From All Parts of the Nation. At its last monthly session the execu- tive board of the Lincoln Monument League commenced active preparations for the celebration of Lincoln day in the public schoo!s of this country. The success of the anniversary of 1897 | Was so encouraging that the gentlemen who compose the executive committee of ihe Lincoln League bave determined this Year to commence active preparations in time, in order tbat there shall be a uni- formity of programme all over the country . W. W. Stone, the president of the league, anticipating the formal sanction of the league, wrote to some of the leaders of educational thought in various sec- tions of the United States, and already replies have come in warmly indorsing | the proposed movement and heartily en- gaging to second every section. Itis to the credit of California energy and enterprise that these leaders, many of them of national fame, are perfectly willing and even anxious to follow in the Jead of the vigorous and able Caiifornia League. 5 That there will be a successful outcome to the labor just now being inaugurated there can be no doubt. The league num- bers among its agents and abetiors East some of the foremost men of the nation, it has the enthusiastic backing of the Na- tional Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, while its certificates of | membership are to be seen in every State of the Union. Among the many prominent promoters of the plan of operations sketched out by President Stone are United States Com- missioner of Education William T. Harris, State Buperintendent Charles R. Skinner of New York, General Chauncey Black of Pennsylvania, Professor Doty of Illinois, Professor W. T. Winship, editor of the educational organ of the Board of Educa- tion of Massachusetts; Professor Wilkins of Ohio and others, who are in liae, wait- ing for orders from the Golden State. Itis the intention of President Stone to form a national advisory board to consist | of prominent educators and public men of national repute—one at least from each Btate of the Union, with headquarters in San Francisco. The modern correspond- ence schools have inaugurated a new sys- tem of “board” business, and Presidant Stone will take advantage of that idea in conducting the business of the national advisory body. This step has not been taken without due consideration. It is the result of a corresponcence extending over a period of six months. Some of the letters arriving from the several State authorities within the past week are given below: CHEY Mr. W. W. Stone, : cisco, Cal—DEAR SIR: Iam in receipt of tho letter of the 29th ult. and will take pleasurein co-operatipg with your plan to have a na- tional celepration of ‘‘Lincoln day” in our schools. 1 inclose herewith a list of the County Superintendents, aiso of the City Superintendents, throughout the State, and would suggest that you correspond with these officers iu reference to the matter. Very re- specttully, ESTELL REEL. State Superintendent. DENVER, Colo., Oct. 1. 1897. W. W. Stone, President Lincoln Monument League, San Francisco, Cal.—DEAR SIR: Your favor of September 26, calling my attention to | the proposed Lincoin national holiday, in honor of Abraham Lincoln, is at hand. I am certainly in favor of celebrating the anniversary, and believe it wiil do muen to strengthen’the patriotism of children who will be the men and women of to-morrow. The Colorado school authorities take great interest in the nurture of patriotism and the teaching of United States history. Anything that I can do tower helping along enthusiasm for the propos=d holiday will be a privilege. Very truly yours, GRACE EsPY PaTTO Superintendent of Pubiic Instruction. HELENA, Mont., October 4, 1897. W. W. Stone, San Franciseo, Cal.—DE AR SIR: Replying to your communication of the 29th ult. regerding the celebration of Lincoln’s birthday, [ think I understand the objects of your letter and appreciate the same. I shall be ready and willing 10 co-operate in any way I may along the lines indicated by your letter, 1 shall be pleased 1o receive any printed mat- ter you may have. Very truly yours, E."A. CARLETON, Superintendent Public Instruction. TOPEKA, Kans., October 4. W. W. Stone Esq., 322 Haight Street, San Fran- cisco, Cal.—DEAR Sik: If I can do anything to honor the name of Abranam Lincoin and to assist in impressing upon the rising genera- tion the simplicity and grandeur of his char- acter I shall certainly be giad to doso. Very truly yours, J. WLEEDY, Governor. NUSIG AT THE BATHS, Large Crowds Attend the Con- NE, Wro., Oct. 2, 2,1897. Haight Streer, San Fran- | W Funckel, Chicago cert Given by Fritz Scheel’s Orchestra, Postponement of a Swimming Race Between Teams From California and Lurline Clubs. A raw, cold day did not prevent the peo- ple from going to Sutro baths yesterday, for the announcement that Fritz Scheel and his grand symphony oichestra of peventy-five pieces would be in attendance ‘Wwas an attraction the lovers of good music could not resist. There was an unusually large crowd ‘present, considering the bad weather, and those who attended did not regret it, as was plainly evident by the manifestations of pleasure which they exhibited after each number of the excellent programme. It was an appreciative audience, the ap- plause was not spared, and Friiz Scheel had reason to feel proud of the hearty welcome he was accorded. The following excellent programme was rendered : March Triomphale, “Aida” (Verdi); Jubel. overture (Karl M. von Weber); Vienna Bon- bons (Johann Stranss); Larzo (for strings), ar- renged by Fritz Scheel (Handel); selection from “Faust” (Gounod); overture, “Tann- hauser” (Richard Wagner); Vienna Mad'ln (Ziebrer); Ave Maria (Bach-Gounod); fantasie, “Traviata” (Verdi); Stars and Stripes (Souse). During an intermission Charmion, the graceful girl aerialist, gave a remarkably clever performance on the flying trapeze. She was a weil-muscled ycung woman, and some of ber feats were accomplished with such a dash and finish as won the admiration of the vast audience. Tuere was a large number of swimmers in the tanks, end some good exhibitions of swimming were given by the more ex- pert ones. The sliding-boards were all in use and the bathers seemed to be enjoy- ing their dip in the salt water. The swimming race that was to have taken place between a team of five men from the California Swimming Club and a like number from the Lurline Club, did not come off, as the tide was out and the water was too shallow. The race was to have been from the end of the Olympic pier to the beach, with a gold medal for the winners. The race will probably be called off next Sunday afternoon if the conditions be favorable. Some of the men essayed to swim around the seal rocks, but the heavy swell proved too much for them and they gave it up. HOTEL ARRIVALS.
