The word “high” means high Larometric pressure and is usnally accompanied by fair weather: refers to low pressure, and is usually preceded and accompanied by cloudy weatherand rains. “Lows"_usually first appear on the Washington coast. When the pressure is high in_the interior and low along the coast, and the isobars extend north and south along the coast, rain is probable: but when the “low™ 1s inclosed with isobars of marked curvature, rain south of Oregon is improb- able. With a “high” in the vicinity of Idaho, and the pressure falling to the Californla coast, warmer weather may be expected in summer and colder weather in winter. Oct 7.—Considerable disap- po'ntment v as shown Ly traders at the opening in wheat over (he Liverpool and Paris cables, the advance in these markets amounting to only about half the gain here yes'erd:y. Trade also took cognizance of the fact that the price here has sdvanced b¢ in the last three days and it seemed to be the general opinion am ng sveculators that areaction was due. They had the courage of their belief. December wheat, which closed yesterday at 928se. opened 1o-day at 9:7@93c, and under persistent hammering s0on solu down to 913ge. ‘Tke arrivals at Duluth and Minneapolis were 1046 cars against 1019 a week ago, and 1160 last year. The figures contravict yesterday's ad ices of a falllng off in farmers’ deliveries. Chicago receipi~ were 331 cars. December ral- iled 10 ¥234¢ on the statement 0f wheat and flour in tbe Uiited Kingdom. ‘Ihese showed wheat stocks of ouly 519,000 quariers October 1, against stocks July 1 of 1106000 quarcers, and flour stocks of Only 245,000 sacks October 1, sgainst 455,000 sacks Julv L ‘I his, accompanied by re- ports of good expor buyiug, kept the market firm for some time. There was 1o break in the drought in the winter wheat section and clear weatuer was predicted for the next thirty-six hours. here were signs, however, of a breaking up of the pro- longed ory speil, and the market during tLe latter part of the session was remarkavle for the con- vatlsm of traders from nothing more than thess vague raln rumors. The Cincinuati Price Current estimated a light acreage seeded on ac- coun: of ine drought. Argentine reports were more discouraging than heretofore ana_predicied_no exportable surplus. Exports were large at 875,000 bushels for the day. Primary market receipts were smaller at 1,065,000 bushels, agains: 1.169 000 bushe year ago. There wasa good business reporied cash whoat. Duluth told of sales of 250,u00 bush- €ls, while there were locai charters of vessel room 1or 300,000 bushels, with a probability of 500,000 bushels more here {n the near future. The market Was Very quitl and heavy toward ihe close. The weakness in corn, which continued even when wheat showed siringih, nad a depressig effect 0n traders and heiped inthe gradual decline which ook piace. wecember finaily soid down 10 9134 and ciosed at 9104, Corn was quite weak. In a newly vatented handle-bar for bi- cycles the shank is geared to the head of the wheel, so as to steer by tipping the bar up and down instead of turning it. 5 A new driving chain for bicy(_:les is formed of a steel belt with teeth in one side to fit in slots in the grooved sprocket- wheels, the chain being much more nar- Tow than those now in use. A bandy package-holder for bicycles cousists of a strap to be backled on the frame at any place aesired, with a snap hook attached to it to engage the cord of the bundle to be attacued to it. Mucilage bottles which will not dry up have a metal top with a compressible rub- ber bulb in the end with a brush projeci- ing from i1, the bulb being squeezed to force the mucilage intothe brush. To assist a carpenter in boring a hole, at any angle or straight, an ad justable bit- holder is pressed against the wood to be bored, with an indicator to show the angle at which the bit is tilted. A new faucet for barrels and jugshas an air-inlet pipe brojecting to the opposite side of the barrel from tne faucet to re- lieve the vacuum as the liquid is drawn off, the air-pipe being always oven. A newly patented sail for yachts and shis has a pumber of rings set in the canvas, with ropes attacbed to the center to draw the sail through the rings, so it may be reefed quickly in case of a storm. A handy stovepipe shelf for warming food cousists of a metal band, to be clamped around the pipe at any desired height, to support a pair of arms, with shelives at their outer ends, on which the dishes rest. A new brake for use on sleds to prevent accidents and keep the sled from running too fast has two upright plungers set in slots in the sides of the frame to be forced downward by a lever and drag on the road bed. Inanew hub for bicycle wheels having tangent spokes the spoke holes are con- nected in pairs by slots to intermediate holes of a larger dianeter than the spoke- heads, so that broken spokes may be more easily replaced. A newly designed cane has a match-box and cigar-holder in its head, a holiow cup in the end being made to serew off to hold the matches, while the cigars are placed in a siot under the head and covered by a slotted ferule, ——————————————————————————— THE CALL CALENDAR, October, 1897, u.|Mo. | Tu. w.
