12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1897 THE CONING GONVENT Many Miners From All Parts of the State Will Be Here. A Strong Movement to Have Several of the Federal Laws Revised. Fully a Million Dollars Wanted for River Dredging and Dam Building, Great preparations are being made for the coming convention of the California Miners’ Association, which will be held on the 18th inst. in Odd Fellows’ Hall, nh.d which will last for two days. Al»:hls gathering several valuable papers will be read and many matters of great import- ance are 1o be considered. One thing to be considered is the revision of the Fed- eral mining laws, and another is the ap- pointment ot a Cabinet officer, & Secretary of Mines and Mining. The subject of the Federal and State appropriations, which amount to §500,000, for the dredging of the rivers and the erection of impounding dams, so that hydraulic mining may be pursued, will be discussed at length. This money has not been expended as yet, but when 1t is the miuers of the State will make an eifort to have as much more again set aside by the Government and State, for they claim that it will take at least a million dollars to accomplish the desired ends. Still another matter that will be seri- ously considered is the more thorough organization of the miners of the State, so that when a movement is set on foot by the association the entire mining industry of Califor: will give it its entire sup- vort. The first preparation for the conven- tion is the setection of delegates to repre- sent the various county associa'ions. I will not consent to have my name used for this position sgain.” From what can be learned there are two gentlemen wnose names are frequently mentioned for the high honors of president. One is Assembiyman Harold T. Powers of Placer County, and owner of the Hidden Treasure mine, and the other is SBuperior Judge E. A. Belcherof thisCity. Inall probability W. W. Came to Talk With Bankers on Bank- ing and Currency Legisiation. Congressman M. Brosius of Lancaster, Pa., is here on business connectea with bank and currency legislation. He arrived at the Occidental Hotel yes- terday accompanied by Mrs. Brosius and Miss Grace A. B-osius. He is chairman of the Committee on Civil Service Reform, ana is next to Chair- man Walker in the Committee on Banks and Currency. i He has been Congressman for five suc- cessive terms from the Tenth Pennsy | vania Districi, familiarly termed the old Thaddens Stevens district. He came out h-re to get the consensus of opinion of bankers of the Pacific Coast relative to prospect ve legislation'affecting the banking busiaess, To-day and io-morrow he will devote to interviews with bankers of San Franecisco. Saturday morning he will depart for his home in the East. Yesterday aiternoon he, with Mrs. Bro- sius and Miss Brosius, ited the Cliff and the Golden Gate Park, escorted by Congressman E. F. Loud. ths trip is primarily for pleasure and recreation and incidentally for the collec- tion of data and information that may be useful to him in Congress. Congressman Brosius is an approacha- ble man, of pleasing personality; he is a Republican. Discussing the financial question, he said yesterday that the silver issue is now a dead one, that it will not figure in the next Presidential campaign unless hard times intervene—a condition that he con- siders very unlikely 1o occur, now that prosperity has come and confidence has been inspired among European nations in the finances of the United States. He does not expect any great changes in banking iaws, for he says that at present they are very generally accepiable. Referring 1o the Hawaiian question, he declined to express his personal opinion, but remarked that very many persons 1o the East are in favor of annexation. ————— Failure of a Saloon-Keeper. Creditors of Charles Bruening have appliea to have him declared insolvent. They com- J plain thathe has transferred all his stock of { liquors, cigars and saloon fixtures at 130 Mis- sion street and that he has secreted himself to prevent the service of legal process on him in an action at law now pendii g in the Superior Court. It is slso nileged that he is about to leave the State. The claims against Bruening aggregate $700. 'Pacific Collection Co.. 415 Mon‘yy DIVID. £Z , DIVIDEND NOTICE_THE BOARD OF Ban Mateo electriccarline from the ferries to Thirtieth street bas caused the raising of the grades on Harrison and Bryant streets, from Tenth to Foufth, in some places as much as three feet from the levels heretofore esiablished and accepted by the city. This will, as a matter of course, neces- sitate the bringing of the entire streetup to the grade of the railroad track, including that portion occupied by the Market- street system over Bryant street, from Fourth to Eleventh, where it turns into Bryant avenue. The low grade on these streeis has been a matter of general com- plaint for a number of years, and not until the improving of the San Francisco and San Mateo line had tuere been any attempt to correct the grades. The improvements on this line, which is the only one leading to 8an Mateo Gounty, are of a superior character. The heaviest rails ever used on any street railroad are being put cown in such a manner as to make the roadbed one <olid mass suscepti- ble to the heaviest traffic without a spring or jar of any kind. Ass:oon as the track is finished to the county line new end im- proved cars will take the place of those now in use, making it one of the very best and most substantial lines on the Pacific Coast. No money has been spared 1n the work now going on over the entire road. The line will, 1t is expected, be finished by the end of the present year, after which the cars will run much oftener than they do at the present time. ———————— Judge Bahrs Js Busy. Judge Bahrs of the Superior Court yesterday began the trial of the People’s Home Savings Bauk against Columbus Waterhouse, the pur- pose being to eniorce the liability of stock- holdersin the defunct bank for the unpaid portion of stock held by them in the cor| tion. There are more than a hundred suits of this kind, and the lawyers say that each case will have to be tried on its merits, as the cir- cumstances are not identical in any of the cases. All this mass of litigation has been as- sigued o Judge Bahrs' court und he will have rectors of the Nevada Bank 01 Sun Fran- has this duy o the rate of six (6) per cent per annum for the quar- ter ending ~ept. 30. 1857, puyab.e on and atter the 15th of Octover, . 387.
