Both Robert Fitzsimmons- and Dr. Carver Emulated in Their Respeotive Branches. Chief Food Iuspector James P. Dockery is always *‘on his muscie” in the dis- charge-of his duly, and Thursday after- noon found that he not only got a chance to keep 1n good trim, but had to cail to Lis aid the bandy revolver. In endeavoring to put some cows in the pound on account 6f the fact that they were feeding in the germ-iaden Islais swamp, he, together with Market Inspec- tor Davis, Poundmaster Osborne and four assistants, had about as lively a fracas as- was ever witnessed beiween dairvmenand law officials. Tnere were torty-ihiree cows feeding in the deadly swamp swhen the mounted assistants of the Poundmaster 1ode in to drive tuem off to the pound. Bome of Edwarl Barry’s. cows were in the swamp, and as soon as he learned of the proceedings he rushed down to where the affuir was in progress. He and his son rolied up their pantaloons and startea to wade into the swamp to drive the cows home. Tiey were ordered toleave. and refused to_do so, whereupon both Dock. ery and Davis sent bullets whistling in cio"e proximity to their neads. That was enough; they vanished us fast as they came. Josepn Chamteriain was the next m: tosbow fizht. Some or his cows were in the swamp and he made a bellowing pro- test. It wasunheeded and he started tor hiome with the avowed purpose of getting a rifle and kiling anvbody in sight. Mounted Policeman McKenna intercepted him and tried the soft voice of reason, ri ceiving in payment a slap in the face. He aismounted and proceeded to use his clup so vigorously on Chamberlain’s cra- nium that before the wounded man wa i locked up at the Seventeenth-street police station on a charge of battery Le had 1o li; sl,!!(‘hed up at the City and County ospital. Chamberlain was hardly outof the way when Lorenzo Desanti came running to cast his offering on the shrine of bovine tuberculosis. He was cursing and pro- testing at every bound, and refused to stop when ordered. Dockery fired poin - biank at bim at a distance of about 150 yar: In his case that was also ample. He quit and ran fa-ter than Tam O'Shanter with all the spooks of Caledoria after aim. All the cows were soon out of tne swamp. An examination by eye con- vinced Dockery that one cow was con- sumprive, and he promptly shot her Market Inspector Davis dissected the cow and proved the theory true. Specimens of her lungs wer: preservea for further analy is. Join McDonough, the owner of the ani- mal, tore off bis coat after her death and started in ustrate the art of hard hitting, a la Fitzsimmons, Dockery being tue punching-bag. Astraignt right in the eve proved his Wate:loo, and he departed in sadness of heart, nursing a swollen and di-colored optic. All the cows were taken to the pound, where the owners will have their permiis to sell milk revoked when they call fo their property. Chamberlsin was released on payment of $100 by Hurry Reynolds, clerk in Police Court 2, yestera .y afternoon. Cierk Aikens Kesigned. E. 8.
