o = 1 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1897. —eeeeeeeee e e HARNESS RACING AT BERKELEY Gathering of Campaigners at the Track Over the Bay. Fall Meeting of Pacific Coast Trotting-Horse Breeders’ Association, Monday, September 27, Will Be the Opening Day—Star Performers to Contest. The fall meeting of the Pacific Coast Trotting-horse Breeders’ Association will be held the coming week at the Californiz Jockey Club’s Berkeley track, commenc- ing Monday, September 27. The entries inciude all the fast cam- paigners of both the California and Mon- tana circuits, and as very liperal purses are hung there is no reason why the best racing of the grand circuit should not be witnessed, as the horses have become thoroughly seasoned. In the grecn class for pacers, to be decided on Friday, the black wonder Jve Wneeler will have a chance to show his real caliber, as he will meet Tom Keating's stalky “wiggler” Anaconda. Wheeler has aiready stepped a mile in 81z, and as Keating’s horse is said to be capable of doing the mile in 2:09 or & trifle bettsr, the pair should fur- nish a fine contest. Among tne other fast ones whose own- ers will have a shy at the purses are: Juspine, Mamie Gritlin, E'.el Downs, Chris Peterson, Galletiee and Caryle Carne in the trotting division, and in the pacing brigade it looks as though Search- light would retain his erown. Frank Covey, who has met with much success in the position of starting judge at the different meets around the circuit, will d spatch the fields at Berkeley.
