Jones of Nevada, James McNaught of New York, ex-coun- sel of the Northern Pacific Railroad Com- and ex-United States Senator Wat- 2quire, expect to make fortunes out of the Alaska country next spring. They have incorporated the Yukon Railway Companv under the laws of New Jersey. Their iead office will be in New York City, where Mr. McNaught, who is now practicing law there, will personally have charge of the p Itis proposed to build a narrow- geuge railroad from Skaguay to Lake Bennett. F. C. Farnham, the mining engineer of California, reached Seattle from New York, where he received his instructions to proceed to Skaguay with all possible speed and do the necessary preliminary work. Mr. Farnham states that the United States Government has granted a right of way and tre road will be in operaiion not later than May. Mr. Farnham hasalready arranged for the necessary material to be used in the construction of the road. The best that can be bougnt will be used in the construction of the road, because the com- pany believes tbhat the population of Alaska will not only increase, but will be permanent, and that the railroad will pay from the start and be a money-making proposition until greater capital sees fit to cover the country from the south coast to the interior with a railroad system. The company has not as yet decided how much passengers will be chargzed for a trip from Skaguay to Lake Bennett. At the present time the company does not eXpect to run any steamers on the lake or Yukon, but wilt _likely enter traffic ar- rangements with one of the numerous companies that contempiate such enter- prise: “There is no reason why the Yukon Company cars should not carry 20,000 peo- ple from Skaguay to Lake Bennett this summer,”’ sa:d a local member of the com- pany to-day. *'We have given the matter careful and mature consideration. The West, as a matter of fact, has no concep- tion of the excitement that reigns in the East over the Yukon gold fields. It is temporarily dying out in the West, be- cause we have neard so much about it, but he East and South it has just com- nced to boom. Why, I had a letter to- day from the South telling that at least 500 men who intended to leave there in the spring for the Klondike will take their departure from the South during the next sjew days. The yeilow fever is driving tsem West, where they will stay until _.;g- spring and then start for the gold fields."” i ne belief prevails here that those who 0 in the spring will make the tripata very small expense. The new railroad company referred to will have a rivalin the company that will put in a tramway system over Chilcoot. The tramway peo- vle say they wiil_be able to do the cheap- est and best traffic business, and the Yu- kon Railway Company says it will have ihe superior facilities and carry goods for less than they can go by the tramway route. It is an actual fact that already these rival companies have agents in this city and in the East who are quietly bid- ding for the spring trade; but rates are looked for. In aadition to these lines Andrew F. Burleigh, ex-receiver of the Northern Pa- cific, will havea raiiroad and tne Canadian Pacific another. —_—— FOOD FOR KLONDIKERS. Transportation Companles Promise to Lose No Time In Sending Needed Supplies North. WASHINGTON, D. C., Sept. 20.—Secre- tary Alger spent some time this morning in conference with President Weare and Michael Cudahy of the Alaska Transpor- tation and Trading Company at his office in the War Departmeat. They announced their intention to make every effort to getas much of the supplies at St. Michael up the Yukon as possible, and it is ex- pected that three more steamers can be run up before the river closes entirely to navigation. So far no steps have been tern affairs of the com- | Another letter, which had been written and mailed by another boat a day or two earlier on the river, reached bere at the same time on the Exceisior. In it, too, there is a touch of interest, due largely to the standpoint from which it was writ- ten—that of a brave young city lad amid new and strange scemes writing confi- dentially to th- loved ones at home. In this letter Gabriel Cohn writes in part as follows: Great excitement prevails on board the boat to-night for we are fastto the Healy,s down bound river boat with about one hun- dred miners on board. They are all over on our boat as our guests, and all have sacks of dust and nuggets. Work is plenty ut $15 a day. Aslam writing miners are displaying goid from 2l sides, but grub—they all snake their heads nx tof them have come out for thet reason. One miner put his hand on my shoulder and said: “My boy, I pity you. Be gritty and I think you'll puil through.” The North American Company has a boat on asandbar up here somewhere ana that is go- ing 1o make matters worse. 1 haveno fear of starving though I may have some tough days, but 1 feel confident of doing well. I have gone so far and if there is any starvation I want to be in it myself. Tne biggest gun on the Healy is a miner named Densmuir. He has $100,000 they say. * * * T mus:close for the_bosts are about to part. Have written a long letter 10 Max to- day congratuiating him and telling him of my novel experience. In haste, GABE. 8. St Regulars Start for the North. CHEYENNE, Wryo.,, Sept. 20.—Lieu- tenant-Coionel George M. Randall, Lieu- tenant E. Wilker, Lieutenant E. Bell and twenty-five enlisted men of the Eighth United States Infantry left here this morning on the west-bound Union Pacific fast mail for Seattle, from which place they will sail Mondny for Alaska. The men’ are well equipped with heavy clothing and the necessary supplies for a winter season in the north. Before start- ing they were paid eight months’ wages in advance. The winter encampment will be at St. Mich , with tize possibility of pushing to Circle City early in the spring. e Saw Them Over the Pass. SANTA ROSA. CarL., Sept. 20, BiAE Shepherd, who went to Alaska with the Goodwin-Thompson party that left here in July, has returned. He went as far as Sheep Camp with the party and saw them safely over the Chilcoot Pass. When he left he aid not intend to go all the way, but was interested 1n his son-in-law, J. E. Sloper of San Francisco. He explained at | | lengtn about the purchase of boats at Dyea and the exorbitant charges of the Indians for carrying provisions, which was refused by the party. Jim Goodwin carried 120 pounds, Fred Thompson eighty-five poundsand Sloper seventy-five pounds. The party arrived at Dawson August 30, without mishap. A Lively Meeting. OAKLAND, CArL., Sept. 20.—At a meet- ing of the City Councii, E. A. Brugiere vresented a proposition to sell the city a tract of land embracing 300 acres for $360,- 000 for park purposes. It is known as the Sather Estate Tract. The committee of the whole will consider the proposition next Monday evening. Councilman Ear! attempted to have the position neld by Deputy License Collector Cole deciared vacant for alieged extortion from the circus people in August. When defeated in this he attacked Treasurer Gilpin, accusing him of cow- ardly hiding behind his deputy, and de- manding that the City Attorney bring suit against his bondsmen for an amount eqnal to $100 for every show held since he | went into the office that he had not col- lected for each exhibition. The tax levy was finally passed and Mayor Thomas promised to sign it as soon as it was presented to him, B A Barroom Row. John Tierney, a laborer, went into Mrs. Clark’s saloon, 31 Second street, last evening and started shaking dice for drinks with Wm. Sears, a_young teamster. Mrs. Clark cnarged Sears with fixing the dice and Tierney backed ber up. Hot words passed and Tierney knocked Sears down twice. Sears took out his gen- knife and jabbed it into Tierney’s left side, in- flicting & serious wound. Tierney was taken to. the Receiving Hospital ana Sears was ar- rested by Policemen Menehan end Phelan for assault to murder. —_————— Stole His Wearing Apparel. Taggart, a dentist of Bakers- field, who has been stopping for some days at the Grand Hotel, committed sui- cide in the room of a friend at the Lick House last evening by putting a bullet through his heart. The deceased had been in low spirits for some days, and on Sunday made an at- tempt on his life by taking a dose of mor- phine. The dose was not heavy enough, how- ever, and through ‘the efforts of his friends he was resuscitated, only to finish the deed last night. On his body was found a gold watch with a Knight of Pythias charm at- tached, a knife, a bunch of keys, $2 in cach and the following letter, evidently ad- dressed to his wife: Dear Eva: Forgive me 1f you can and take good care of Fred. I have lost your confidence and don’t care to live. Dave. The bodv was identified by Dr. A. L. ‘Wiison and Dr. G. G. Shannon, friends of the deceased, who are stopping at the Lick Houae. The deceased also leaves two brothers, Charles Taggart of 217 South Broadway, Los Angeles, and Thomas Taggart of Bakersficld. He was about 26 years of age and apparently in robust health. The body wae taken fo the Morgu DEBATED ANNEXATION. Prominent Unitarian Club Members at the Banquet Last Night Dis- cussed Hawail, The Unitarian Club of California had a banquet last night at the California Hotel, followed by a debate upon the guestion of the annexation of Hawaii. There were as- sembled about the two long tables 130 men, including some guests of the club, which has an active membership of 170. Tue speakers for annexation were W. H. Mills, S. H. Ke!loge and Horace Davis; against annexation, Joseph Hutehinson, fn_d;:e M. H. Myrick and Colonel John P. rish. The creat point made by Colonel Irish was that annexation would be opposed to the Monroe doctrine. Horace Davis, on | the other hand, qu:oted great admirals and generals and the London Times to the effsct that whichever nation wou'd pos- sess the Hawaiian Istands would have the key to the Pacific. Mr. Kellogg took up the five principal objections to annexation and answered them in this way: (1) Great distance—They are notso far trom the States of neerly so far west as the western extremity of Alaska. (2) Difficult of defense— It would be more diflicult than that to de- fend this cosst ii the isiands should be anuexed by some other country. (3) Char- acter of population—Bui the natives are dviog off and are being replaced by mixed races; Oriental laborers, because under contract, ate returning to their coun- tries. (4) Against consiitutional policy—A similsr course was pursued with California and Alaska, aud these jsiands are the only ones left in the Pacific. (5) Not the wish oi Hawaiians—Their constitution gives every man the rigit to Yote, but they are indifferent 10 the privilege. Furthermore, he said that there is not another country in the world that would refuse the islands; that they import from San Francisco as much as this city exports to Australia or to Jupan; that this coun- try's Western seaboard of 3000 miles re- quires an ocean coaling station: that re- fusal to annex would be desertion of loval Americans on the islands and Japan would eventually get control. In conclusion, Mr. Kellogg said: “We are not entering upon any danger- ous experiment; we are not about to an- nex any large, populous, alien country, like Brazil, or Mexico, or even Cuba; we are simply coming into our natural in- heritance, a territory & littie smaller than Massach setts, where the Englisn lan- gunge is spoken, where Thanksgiving and the Fourtn of July are celebrated, where the mostadvanced American ideas are in- corporated in its constitution and its laws and where no citizen of the United States will ever feel a stranger from the day it is morning, but found it closed. They stood | JMProvement C ub to not grant extension of time outside bewailing their loss, and a big crowd gathered. The police were notified, und Detective Anthony was detailed on the case. He found that Mrs. Frances had packed her trunks -Sunday and quetly disappeared, leaving all her bills unpaid, including her bookkeeper and man-ol-all- work. Anthony ascertained that the woman came irom Cripple Creek, where she kept a restaurant. She is a native of Germany. ——— Directors Banqueted. The exhibitors at the Mechanics’ Fair showed their appreciation to the directors of that institution by banqueting them last evening.
