12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATURDAY. SEPTEMBER 18 1897 WELL PLEASED TH “THE CALL" Everybody Satisfied With | the Pledees of the Supervisors. Missionites and Other Tavpay- ers Glad That the Zoo Scheme Is Killed. Half a Million Dollars Saved to the City by the Energetic Work Against the Plot. While the advocates of the expenditure of $400,000 of the people’s money fora tract of land for a park and zoological gar- den are working up fictitious indignation meetings, on paper, and bogus petitions, also on paper, th who believe in having the substantial improvemeats first.are perfectly satisfied with the expression of opinion of the various Supervisors. The Mayor has said that he thought the present time inopportune, the old Board of Supervisors went on record as being op- posed to the scheme to unload a lotof worthless property on the city at an ex- orbitant price, and now the new board has also expressed itseli, or a majority of it has, as being against an increased taxa- tion for the purpose of establishing a| monkey-ranch in Squirrel Hollow. That | this expression on the part of the men | who make the 1ax levy is acceptable to the taxpayers can be seen from the inter- views had with men who are well known and stand high in the commaunity. William Ede—The residents of the Mission district were never 1n favor of | the park and zoo scheme, and of course we are all well pleased with the fact that a majority of the members of the Board of Supervisors will vote against it. 1 was | sure they wouid stand between the job- | | W H Conai " L Macleay, P € H L wis, Portiand bers and the peop'e when they learned the true situation. There are too many places for our money jast now to spend it on parks, and the Supervisors are as well aware of this fact as anybody else. John Morton—I am well vleased with the maiteras it now stands. I must confessthat for a time it looked asif we were to be infl in order that certain land-boomers could dispose oi their property, btt I always re- lied upon the sterling good sense of the Superv.sors and was sure tha* when they knew bow the matter stood they would | not be parties to the scheme. THE CaLn deserves the thanks of all the tuxpayers for its noble fight. Judge . J. Toohey—Therecould b= but oue ontcome to this matter if the Supervisors took the desires of the tax- payers into consideration, and they have evidently done this. We are all well pleased with the si 1 pecially pleased with the fight THE CaLn bas made for the people. BPaniel W. Kelly—I am glad that we have bear! from ihe Supervisors in this matte~. It is an essy matter to get up a petition with many names upon it, but when it comes to having the tax-pay ers sign a peiition asking for increased taxation that is another matter. The peo- ple of the Mission were not wanting a park and zoo, and we are glad that we are Lot going to get one. Thomas H. Lawler, 911 avemue—l aumire ibe spint of the edi- torial in THE CarLw regarding the stand of | the other papers on the question of a park and zoo. Let the other papers speak out, g0 we will know where to find them. There has never been a time when the Mission needed a zoological garden, no bave we ever asked for any such an ins.i- tution. We want good streets, not wild animals. J. M. Thomas, wholesale dealer in painis and oils, IS Vicksburg street—lne whole zoo proposition 1s a fraud. Itis a real-estate deal. The people are with THE CALL, and on next Monday, or when the board meets, the scheme will ot get one vote. T. C. Mosher, Dep Clerk: 1 bope THE CALL will keep up the fight until all danger is past. The | Mis:ion, to paraphras> a celebrated quo- tation, expects every Supervisor to do his duty, and that duty is to see to it that the 1ub ic funds are not squandered on such schemes as the so-calied zoo. N.Dodge, 836 Valenciastreet: I velieve tuc Supervisors who were inter- viewed in THE CaLL will stand by their pledges. Iconsider the fight won. THE CaLL has saved the city half a million dollars. IT WAS TOO COLD. The Ex-Supervisors D .sappointed the Boomers in Squirrel Hollow. The Supervisorial excursion to the “Squirrel Hollow” park site guished body was there by its representa- tives, George D. Shadburne, T. V. O'Brien and Dr. Curtis G. Kenyon. Tie balancs | of the committee (ten) did not show u Four carriages with eight black horses | suitable for funeral purposes were there | with drivers adorned with stovepipe head- gear. The Hon. Thomas W. Rivers, ex-| Supervisorof the Twelith Ward was, there | with his heavy overcont thrown carelessly | over his arm. He was waiting for his ex- | associates of the board that was, Messrs. Shadburne, O'Brien and Dr. | Kenvon held a close corporation whisper | with the honorable ex-Supervisor. from | the Twelith Ward, afier wkich the quar- tet separated and made a carefu. but in- effectual search through the corridors oi the City Hall building for the other seven ex-honorable gentiemen who had prom- ised to take a drive to the proposed site at the expense of the “Mission Park and Zoological Garden Association.”” Failing to find any of thete they werein search of President Shadburne, and his assistant, T. V. O’ Brien, returned, and in the saddest of tones informed the hzckmen that their services would not be required this afrer- noon. Qut in the Squirrel Hollow everything had been put in the best possible shape for the inspeciion of the disiinguished body that was cxpected, but that did not ma- terialize. The fences had all been white- washed and the gopner and squirrel holes bad been filled up with sand and made to look as natural as was possible. A distin- guished delegation of *“boomeis” had taken their places on the lee side of the gum t_ees, to shelter themselves from the cold fog that had unwelcomely come in through the ravine from the ocean. This unwe!come visitor was just the re- verse of what the “‘boomers’’ wanted, as it presented the home of the squirrels in anything but « favorable coloriug. It was coldt and windy out there, and so it was about the City Hall in the sections where the ex-Supervisors stood in shady corners waiting the sad news that came later from the Parrott building, when the Supreme Court declined to review the findings of Judge Wailace. After waiting for two long hours for the four carrizges that were to bring the hon- orable(?) ex-Supervisors the toomers be- came disheartened and dispersed. In an hour or so afterward the festive | *quirreis and the zopners weze in the pos- ses:fon of their natursl homes and boles undisturbed. The “boomers” are sad. New Insuravce Manager.
