THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, MONDAY SEPTEMBER 13, 1897. HEAVY BATTING WON THE DAY Reliance Defeats Los Ange- les in a Very Clbse Game. The Score Remained Three to Three Up to the Eighth Inning, The Heesemans Gain a Victory Over the Orack Gilt Edges—Other Games. Reliance won from Los Angeles yester- day in one of the closest games of the present season The playipe of both teams was fast and brillian:. The Reliance sggregation sus- tained their reputatior as heavy hitter by touching Harvey up for ten hits. The auburn-haired twirler from the ciiras beit was at his best yesterday, and managed to fan nine of the Athenians’ best batters with his puzziing deiivery. 1 he visitors from the south put up their usually fine fielding game, but when in tight places their nervousness gave the Oaklanders a chance to score. Little, dark-skinned Manzerina’s work benind the bat was of high order. His catching of Nealon’s foul tip in the sixth earned him an ovation. For Reliance, “G the particular shining light. Owing to the acquisition of clever Charley Drews, their new catcher, Harry Wilson, occupied the initial bag, and tne tall young man from across the bay was shifted to short. A better selection for that position could not be made. Maguire played all over the in-field and his throwing to first wasex- ceedingly accurate. Out of eleven chances, he succeeded in getting nine, and the two he alowed to get away were excusable. Doyle in the opening innings wass trifle wild, but the fine support given him had a good effect as he settled down and during the remainder of the game, he pitched great ball. Reliance scored their first run in the second, when H. Wilson gained firston a single, stole second and came home on Stulz’s single to right. In their half of the cecond, Los Angeles scored three runs on a base on balls, three singles and the same number of errors. No runs were scored until the fou when Reliance gained two on. l1itle Man- gerina’s wild throw. After Wilson had flown out to center, Nealon lined a single to right and stole second. Drews was given a base on balls. Mangerina made one of his snap throws to first to catch Diews napping, but the bali went over Whaling’s head and struck the grand stand fence, where it caromed into the field. Before itcouid be recovered, both Nealon ancé Drews scored. Neither side was able to do anything until the eighth, when Reiiance added two more runs on_three singles and a poor throw to third by Whaling. Los Angeles showed their weakness as batters in the last inning. W haling was lucky to be hit by the ball and went to first. Wilson, afier ailowing a number of good chances to go by, senta pop fly to Lange, which was neatly captured. Van Horn then struck out, and Whaling, see- ing he couldn’t rely on his team to score nim, stole second. He!d was next up and senta hot grounder past short and Whal- ing scored. One more run was needed to tie the score, but ncks could notrise to the cccasion. He batted an easy oue to Dovle and spoiled the southern team’s chances of winning.
