Itisalsoa violation of the law to fill the | street in suci a manner for any time | longer than will b2 absolutely necessary o curing the ni: those mills and remove it into the bui ings or storerooms. “For months and months the streets in the neighborhood of Beale, Fremont, Mis- | sion and Howard have been half filled | with lumber, junk, donkey engines and scrap iron, and it is a menace to life and | a disgrace to the Ci besid being al violation of the orders of the Street De- partmeat. “It is absolutely unsafe to drive there during the night, snd every fireman who Roes there to a fire afier dark takes his life in his hands. I was thrown from my buggy not long azo by driving into one of | these nuisances, and I think I was lucky | to escape with my life. ““I'he provrietors of these placescannot | be altogether blamed for theirnegligence, | as the Superiniendent of Streets should | enforce the order. Itiscriminal to allow the streets to be in such a fix. They are; rongh enough there without having loads | of lumber strewn broadcast around. { “Daring tuperintendent of Streets | Aiwooa’s administration, any obstruction of the kind was hauied cff 10 the city cor- poration vards and sold at public agc.ion, | and thatis what should be done now. A/ few sales of property would bring these | ople to their sens s and teach them to | reciate the danger of firemen and | ers who ate compelled to go through t portion of town at ht and av full | i at that. | Some places are much worse than but they are all bad enough. Itis| time to have the matter attended to, it will be done if possible without } I c gineer Wells also thinks it is time to do something to protect, to a cer- tain extent, the lives of those whose | bu ess takes them on a run through the streets at night. 1 wish,” he said, *“that something could be done in tais matter, for I con- s my own life in danger, as well as | my men. It seems thut the worst ob- | structions are in the worst piaces—that is, | placed just at the corner of the streets. When an engine or trock is running to a | fire it is i mpossible to see any danger until | 18 too late to stop. Itis a wondertbat many of us have not already been Kkilled waile | going to fires in the lower portions of the city. The streetsin many places are so! obsiructed that it is impossible to turn a | truck arouna sfter driving into the street, | making it necessary to arive around the bloc It is time the nuisance was stopped.” | Yesterday Chief Sullivan had some photographs taken of the corner and ob- | siructions where Sawyer was injured, as | we.l as visiting other places in ine same | condition. Over 150 places were found | where the street obstruciion ordinance was being violated, and the records will | be kept for tuture reference. Tue place most bitterly complained of | by the department is at 105 Fremont street. At that plece lumber is piled i the street 10 such an extent that it is 1m- possible for two trucks to pass through at | the samc time. At 103 Fremont street | old boilers and scrap iron cover one-third | of the width of the street. At 309 Folsom street it was seen that donkey engines, | pieces of machinery and old iron were | piled in the street within two feat ot the | | car tracks. At Fremont street pieces | of iron and pointed castingsextend over | twelve feet beyond the curb. Lumber | was piled in the street at 212 Fremont si. feet high and 1wice as wide. At 121- Beale old trucks and junk were scaitered from the sidewalk to the m:ddle of the street. The wheeis of the irucks have been taken off, which would make it im- possivle to remove them from the way of 1 epartment in case of fire there. At! le junk and scrap iron were piled revt which extended ten or twelve At Beale and Folsom there was more junk and scrap iron in the CGONE T0 COACH STANFORD MEN George Brooke, Pennsyl- vania's Greatest Full- back, Is Here. A Powerful Young Athlete Who Is King of Football Kickers, Mot Last Night by Old Stanford Students and Will Go to Pale Alto To-Day. George H. Brooke of New Jersey, the University of Pennsylvania’s greatest full- back, arrived atthe Palace Hotel last night direct from Philadelphia. He has come to coach the Staniord football team, and will go down to Palo Alto to-day. Brooke wus praduated from the Uni- versity of Pennsylvania a year ago with the class of '96. He is now fitting for the bar. Before entering college he was cap- tain of the Swarthmore preparatory school team. During his university ca- reer he was varsity fullback for ihree years, and received the highest praise from the pbest football authorities in the country. When Casper Whitney, at the close of the season of 1895, named his all- America team, composed of the best eleven play- ers to be found in America, he wrote: “There is no difficulty in choosing a full- back. Brooke is unquestionaoly entitled to that distinction, for bis marvelous cking, which includes proficiency in every department of that game, his line- bucking and hisrunning through a broken 1. Notsinc: Butterworth has another such an ail-round fullback been developed, and although Brooke exce!s Butterworth in droj-kicking their punting is about even, and Butterworth is superior in ad- vancing the ball.’”” In the Harvard-Pennsylvania pame of 1895 Brooke's field goal won the game for Pennsylvania. In figure Brooke resembles Franken- heimer, Stanford’s veteran bucking half, only he is largerand taller. He weigh¢ 185 pounds with his clothes and is 5 feet 9 inches in heigit. His appearance imme- diately suggests the powerful young ath- lete. He dresses well, is smooth shaven, has clear-cut features and large blue eyes, and his hairis a compromise between Berke- ley gold and Palo Alto cardinal. He was met 2t the Oskland mole and escorted his ci by § ord men Football Manager Switzer '98, who was on the debuting team that defeated Berkeley last year; Student Body Treasurer Pomeroy Dive Brown '97, ex-football manager, ¢x-track man r and ex-track captain; *‘Jack'’ Sheenan '95, and **Biily” t he believes hard work. ll-developed second eleven is the foundation for a successful team. Asthe corner was turned the danger was real- ized, but too late, for the truck dashed into the street obstruction and Sawyer was thrown to the ground and crushed between the truck and the lumber, lnd’ his injuries have been pronouunced fatal. | The blockaded condition of the streets will now be cailed to the attention of the Superintendent of Streets, and an effort wili be made to have the obstructions re- moved. “There is an order,”’said Chief Sullivan, "'to the effect that where it is impossible toremove such obstructions in the street, | | | work will be dome until the stone and iron | took up about ene-third of the width of the street.
