10 SUUIRRE] HOLLOW 1§ CONDEMNED A Brief History of the Or- igination of the Park and Zoo. NOT MISSION REPRESENTATIVES. | The Personnel of the Associa- tion Which Is Working for the Scheme, A SMALL PARK. FAVOR WouLh ihe Residents of the Warm Belt| Will Cppose the Monkey Ranch. The claim having been set forth that| the proposed park and Squirrel Hollow | zoo is a movement of the residents of the | Mssion may be justly set down as quite | the reverse. A glance at the names and | residences of the originators of the scheme | will dispel this illusion. Before proceed- | ing to show who they are it will not be | amiss to go back a little into the history | of what the Mission residents have done | for the welfare of their section. The first movement started in the mak- | g of Folsom street a boulevard and hav- | ing it paved with bitumen, which Was ac- | complished by the united efforts of al! the | Mission property-owuers, principally A. | B. Ma-uire, who labored moslls!\duauslyi‘ | in having the work done. This naving been accomplished the next movement made was to zet a High School located in that section for the accommodation of the thousaunds of children who by reason of ! the distance from that vart of the City where the nigh schools weie located to| their hom~s were compelied to pay car-| fare and at the same tim: travel a iong distance. The justice of this was accepted by all, and as a consequence an appropriation was made and a school siie selected. Having thus succeeded so well in what | the Mission residents considered as their just rights because of the amount of taxes so cheerfully paid by ihe people for the improvement of the other portions of the City, and recognizing that the number of smail parks or squares scattered through- | out the Western Addition had veen both | healthiul and beneficia! to the people and | to the owners of real estate, it was thought that the procuring of the two cemetery lots in the central portion of t.e Missicn proper and facing the new High School | bnilding woud be botb attractive and also beneficial as a healtn resort, and at| the same time add to the value of real| estate. While this was under con- sideration, and with a fair prospect of its consummation, a so-cailed **Mission Park Acssociation” was organized in the month of April, and immediately after the or- ganization of this and at a time when there seemed to be no opposition to the movement, the “zoo’’ proposition was 1acked on the originai article. The names and residents of the pro- moters of the Mission park and zoo at the | | | | time of its origination are here given. It| will be seen that out of the nineteen, who | permittea tieir names to be used in tne | procuring of what at that time seemed to | be a park for the Mission, nine did not reside in that section: | George D. Shadburne, 819 California street. William M. Bunker, 1601 Pine street, J. J. McEwen, 26 Webster street. John B. Grady. 3526 Tweniy-fourth street. Thomas W. O'Brien, 808 Van Ness avenue and Be.veder John A. Buck, 619 Hampshire street. C. C. Bemis, 419 Bryant street (Rincon Hill), Dr. G. G. Kenyon, 901 Sutter street. i George L. Center, 2828 Sixteentn street. W. H. Crim, 2526 Howard street. | | | | Major Berna McKinne, 317 Hill street. W. L. Williamson. 28 Wenster street. A.'P. Toneili, 1823 Turk street. B. Maguire. 3328 Twentieth street. D. Code, 940 Vaiencia street. | W. Metzner, 1231 Guerrero street. Colonel John O’Byrne. 300 Fair Oeks street. | George A. Raabe, 2983 Twenty-fizst street. Thomas Jeunings, 2273 Fiiteenth s:reet. But since the “rawness’” of the attempt to :ell a piece of land that is only assessed at $57,000 to the taxpayers through the Supervisors at $400,000 Messrs. Muguire, Center, O'Bvrne, Williamson and some others guietly withdrew. | Atno time in the history of the under- | taking were there more than twelve per- | sons present at any one meeting, and at | tue lastoue beld in Lawyer Snadburne’s | office on last Wednesday afternoon there were only four of the original promoters | present. . i Damniel W. Kelly, a property=- owmnerresiding ai 917 Guerrero street amd omne of the most energetic workers of the WMis. sion Improvement Club: *I am now, as L aiways was, s firm aavocate of | improvements in the Mission. 1 have veen a member of the Mission Improve- ment Club since the first one was started, and I have never remained away from a meeting when the question of expense | was a factor, so long as the meeting was for the improvement ot the section in! which Ilive. I mean the entire Mission. But when a few men held a meeting in a real estate office on Montgomery street and hacwned out one of the greatest schemes of the age to foist upon the tax- vayers an imposition such as the Gum Tree tract of land for a public park at a price more than three times its value, and all this in the name of the people of the Mission, [ am so opposed to it that at times I am inclined to think that ihe at- tention of the Grand Jury should be drawn to it. Of Professor Jor- dan, and his interference in this matter, 1 have this to say: Tha” if it were not for his reputation in this community his rose-colored statement of the beauties of ‘Squirrel Hollow,” “dis- | covered only by himself, would render him subject to the suspicion that his championship of this colossal fraud, not only on the Mis<ion people, but the entire people of the City and County of San Francisco, is not prompted by disinter- | ested motives. But as I have saia [ am | willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and simply come to the conclusion that he bas permitted himself to be im- posed upon by & few desigring men who saw a chance to improve their finances out of the publiccrib. “THE CaLL deserves great credit for the brave fight 1t is making to prot:ct the tax- ayers against the thieving job thatis | L'uxug put up by a lew shrewd real estate | men. The Golcen Gate Park is the place for any ana «il animals that may go to make up a zrological collection.” | J. S. Boyson, proprietor of a | drugsiore om the cormer of ‘Fweniy - first and Valencia sireets: “Golden Gaie Park 1s the place for the zoo if the people are to have one, and the Mission residents want a firsi-class driveway over Seventeenth pirect to that park. TuE CaLy is doing good work for the taxpayers when itis engaged in trying to defeat the squirrel- hollow job. This is not silurian, but it is pro ress and advancement. Repair the streets and sewers before you go into the purchase of a lot of wild animals. Ana again this is nota Mission movement in any sense of the word. I am willing to stake my reputation upon the question that, 1f the matter were submitted to the people of the Mission to-morrow, 15 per cent of them would not be in favor of it, whereas 99 per cent would favor a sma'l park where the women and children could 20 without baving to nav carfare” Barna McKinne, asftormey, residing at 317 Hill sireet: a mewber of the Park and Zoological Garden Association, but that organization has gone clear outside of the purpose for which it was started. It was the distinct understanding when it was organized that while it would work for a park and zoo it would not favor any especial tract. But the association has gone away from its original intention, and as a result only about six of tha members who started it are now connected with it. I made a strong protest against the indorsement of any tract of land in the club and shall continue to fight against the payment by the City of such a price for the land as is asked. The tract that is offered for $387.000 is not worth more than $100,000, ant 1 don’t propose to see the Uity bunkoed without entering my prolest. If we are to have a park and zooloyical gar- den, let the Supervisors say so, and then let a jury of twelve citizens, under the direction of the court, say where the site shall be and what the amount to be paid shall be. [ shall remain in the cluband fight ali sucn sch mes.” Charles Alpe: “No monkey ranch for me. lue tew men who are be- hind this job want to sell a piec of worthless land to the City at four times its value. A GATHERING OF OLANS. of Sport at The Scots The seventh annual gathering of the Order of Scottish Clans was held yester- day. A parade of clansmen, dressed in kilt and plaid, ana headed by a fuil pipers’ band, started from the foot of Market street at 10 in the morning and proceeded to the Chutes, where the day was spent. The regular attractions at the Chutes were the entertainments for the morning, and at noon the games and athletic spurts began. The entries for each event were lurge and the sport lasted the entire after- noon. In the evening there wasa grand ball and a magnificent display of fire- works. The superiority of the Amercan boy to the British boy was shown in the race for apprentices of British ships. Two boys from American ships entered the race un- challenget and took first and second money. The American boys were barred and the race run over. The tug of war between the Oakland and San Francisco clans ended in a slight dis- agreement. Ecach clan won a “pull,’’ and on the final one the Oakiand clan, not hearing the signal, didn’t puli. Eucn clan claims the victory. Summary of games vs under 12, handicap—Robert Ross, Ed- ~lie, Colin Story Girls_under 12, handicap—Agnes Ahlians, Susie Kahler, Maoel Dennis.
