10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1897 AIS FRAUDS ARE EXPOSED How Dr. Harry Cooper Swin- dled His Landlady in Chicago. 3he Had Implicit Confidence in Him and She Proved an Easy Dupe. The Oharges of Obtaining Money by Talse Pretenses Against Him Will Be Heard To-Day. When Dr. Harry Westwood Cooper was arrested last Tuesaay night Chiet Lees wired to the Pinkerton agency in Chicago asking if he was wanted there and re- ceived a reply the lollowing day that he had passed a worthiess draft on Miss Mary E. Murphy, 529 Dearborn street. Yesterday the Chief received a letter from the Pinkertons in which full details of Cooper’s dealings with Miss Murphy sre given. In the early part of last June Coover and his wife secured lodgings in Miss Murphy’s house. He soon succeeded in winning the confidence of his landlady by telling ber that he was a man of means and social rank and had fallen heir to a fortune left him by a titled uncle in Aus- tralia. He first succeeded in getting $500 from her, giving hera draft for £140 on the Bank of New South Wales as security. Soon afterward he induced her to part with $600, and the bank notified her attor- neys, Duna & Byron, of the fact. One of the partners called upon her warning her against Cooper, but he was curt!y told to mind his pwn business, as she was sat- isfied “Sir’’ Harry was all right. - Cooper had the effrontery to call upon the attorneys and told them that he ex- pected £2840 from the Supreme Court of New South Wales, whici had been left bim by his uncle. They expressed sur- prise that the sum was not in round num- bers and Cooper went away. He subse- quently returned and sa'd theamount was £17,000. This confirmed their suspicion and they wrote Miss Murphy again, warn- ing her, receiving an insulting reply from ber. Cooper had so impressed his landlady with his importance that he had no diffi- culty ir getting $300 more from her, mak- ing $1400 altogether. She also showed him the letter she had received from her attorneys, which made Cooper decide to to leave the city. When Miss Murphy’s attorneys heard that Cooper was to leave they communi- cated with the police and advised them to piace him under arrest as a suspicious | character, but no action was taken and | Cooper came to this City. Miss Murphv is said 10 be a8 woman of considerable means, owning property in Chicago and Detroit. The Pinkertons ad- vised her attorney in the latter city to counsel his client to prosecute Cooper. While in Chicago Cooper had six steel dies made at the shop of Anton Schwen- inger, 166 Randolph street. One was the seal of the Probate Court of New Soutn Wales ana the others of New South Waies treasury notes for different amounts. The Pinkertons further say that they had iniormation that, on arriving here, Cooper deposited a draft for £17,000 with the Crocker-Woolworth bank for coilec- tion, upon the Merchants’ Loan and Trust Company_of Chicago. The locul bank wired to Chicago asking if the draft was good, ana received a reply that it was vrobably counterfeit, as Cooper originally had a deposit of only $370 with the Trust Company, and oniy $10 remained to his credit. Last Wednesday the Metropolitan Na- tional Bank of Chicago received the draft and notifi:d the Trust Company tbat it was worthless. The Trust Company, on the same day, received a letter irom Cooper tuat he had drawn on them for £17,000, and inclosed a power of attorney so that they could collect the money that was coming to him from the Supreme Court of New South Wales. Pinkerton’s letter closed with the in- formation that Cooper was undoubtedly a dangerous swindler, and that his con- viction here or 1n Chicago was much to be desired. Chief Lees said yesterday that he had not been notified of an officer having left Chicago with the requicition papers for Cooper’s extradition. He thought the dispalch was in error, as he had wired Chicago Saturday morning that he could hold Cooper bere, and if they wanted him there they would made have a formal de- mana upon bim. As they had notdone so h« inferred they were satisfied to have Cooper stand his trial here. The hear.ng of the charge of obtaining money by false pretenses preferred b John P. Gallagher agaist Cooper will ta. place before Judge Low to-day. The complaints on the two forgery charges will be filed this morning and the prosecution will be ready to proceed when the cases are called to-morrow. NOTICES. der of the H. P. CALIFORNIA CHAPTHR NO.
