THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1897 WELCOME THE BOT [N GRAY Letter-Carriers’ Association ‘ to Convene Here on | Monday. 70 BE GIVEN A BIG RECEPTION, Object, Aims and History of an | Important Organiza- tion, LOCAL COMMITTEES HARD AT WORK. | Headquarters Established at the Baldwin—Handsome Badge of the Local Branch. ! The National Assoclation of ter-car- | riers of America will convene in this City i next Monday. About 600 delegates from all parts of the United States will attend. Extensive preparations for their reception Delegate’s Badge. and entertainment have been made by a committee of the local branch of the asso- ciation, and although tlie committee has not yet secured the sum for that purpose that had been confidently expected, the prospects are excellent for a brilliant week of it during the stay of the carriers in San Francisco. The lhfe of the National Association numbers only eight years, but it is a vig- orous body despite its youthful years. It| was organized in Milwankee, Wis., in 1889 | by a number of carriers from that city, Detroit, Buffalo, Omaha, Providence, and some of the smaller towns of Massachu- setts. The membership of the association at | the start numbered 1500 all told. William | H. Wood of Detroit was chosen as presi- dent. Various matters pertaining to the | condition of letter-carriers in t e various cities and legislation in their behali were dis us-ed with vigor. The effect of the| ation was felt by the letter-carriers | ywhere, and in 1890, when the associa- tion met at Boston, the admission of new | members reached an enormous figure. John J. Goodwin of Providence vas chosen | president at that session.. In 1891 the con- vention met at Detroit, when Theodore C. Denn's of Boston was e ecied as president. At tbe convention of 1892, he:d at Indiun- apolis, Frank E. Smiin of San Francisco was honored with the presidency and re- | elected the following year. In 1894 C. C. Couden of Cincinnati was elected pres! dent; in 1895 Richard F. Quinn; in 1896 | John N. P.ur-ons, who wiil preside at the | sessions to be held here next week. Tne objects of the association are de- signed to better the condition of memn- vers. Necessary legislation in their behalf has been accomplished, and one of the main features is an insurance fund known as the Mutnal Benefit Association, in the | benefits of which every letter-carrier shares. A biil is now pending in Congress wroviding for an increase of salary, and it has met with the indorsement of every | member of the House. The legislative | committee of the National Association is | exerting every effort in the interests of the bill, and it is iikely to become a law at 1he nextsession. The_liccal committees are hard at work preparing for the convention. At the headquarters of the committee, at the Baldwin Hotel, yesterday, animation and nctivity were the rule. Last evening the committee moved into the parlors of the liotel, where open house wiil be held dur- ing the convention. There will be a side- board conveniently located, st which Cali- | fornia ! quids, dispensed with California | generosiiy, will be constantly on tap for | the delectation of the visitors. Beveral delegations arrived in the City yesterday, including ihose from Los An- geles, Portland and Pomona. A commit- tee of three, consisting of Frank E. Smith, chairman of the general committee of ar- rangements; Conrad Trieber, secretary, and Charles A. Wisewell, will go to Sacra- mento to-night and remain there until to- morrow, when the Eastern special, carry- ing 400 delegates, wiil arrive. The train will be met at the Sixteenth-street station in Oakland by the reception committee and escorted across the bay The finance committee met yesterday af- | Evening | ca director: ternoon and reported about _$6000 on hand in cash and subscriptions. This fallsshort about $2000 of the sum counted upon by the committee, but efforts will be made to collect a portion if not all of that sum to-day. s The badge of the local delegates is a work of art. It is of blue satin, with gold braid and tassels. The badge is about eight inches long and two inc '»s wde. It is crested with a pretty medailion bearing the wora, ‘delegate,” and from it is a beavy zolden bear. The inscription is as foliows: *‘Delega'e Golden Gate Brench No. 214, N. A. L. Swing, professor of theology in Oberlin College, at Oberlin, Ohio, arrived here Wedne-day in the Australia from Honolulu and took the evening overland for his home in the East. He went to the islands partly for recreation and partly to make a careful study of the coffee industry and its prospects. He spent several weeks examining coffee lands on the different islands, He says that coffee cuiture is only in its infaney in Hawaii, and that there are great areas of land well adapted to coffee, but not yet vlanted. He is emphaticully in favor of annexation, and believes that it wouid greatly promote the culture of coffee. The 1slands themselves he locks upon as a valuable acquisition for commercial and | naval purposes in the event of the com- pletion of the Nirarazua canal SAN FRANCISCO “CALL."™ BUBINESS OFFICE of the San Franclseo CArt— 710 Market street, Open unill 12 o'clock every Dignt in the year.
