10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL. MONDAY, AUGUST 30, 1897. WLAUGHLIN THE SHOOTING KING With a Score of 222 the Marksman Takes First Prize. Final Day’s Festival of the] Schuetzen Club on the San Rafael Range. John Utsohig Scores 77 Out of a Possible 80 on the Man Target at ¢chuetzen Park. D. W. McLaughlin will be crowned king of the shooting section of the Californiu Schuetzen Club next Thursday night. He won the honors yesterday at the final day’s shooting of the annual festival of the great shooting organization. The range at Schuetzen Park, near San Rafael, presented a lively scene yesterday. The rifles of the marksmen beat a leaden bail against the targets from early morn until near sundown, and good scores re- sulted. The light was not perfect, yet for the greater part of the day it was strong, | and the targeis stood out clear as the trained eyes cf the sharpshooters ran along the gleaming barrels of the guns. As the afternoon grew apace the clouds that hung over the park blotted out the sunkight and made a changeable light on the targets that interfered greatly with the marksmen in scoring the final bulls- eye. “J. F. Robinson, who took the prize at Sacramento for the bext shot in the com- petition instituted by the State for the members of the National Guard «f Cali- fornia, was at the range, and, though he shot well as usual, his scores were not such as to win any of the large prizes. A great many of theo!d marksmen were at the park and it was noticeable that the | younger members of the organization are | rapidly taking their places as the crack hots. 2 John Utschig Sr., one of the leading mem bers of the California Schuetzen Club, made a score of 77 out of a possible 80 on the man targets. D. W. McLau, n fol- lowed this closely by making a 75 shot. The man target is one of the most difficult 1o score on, and was but recentiy intro- duced 1n the ranges. It has frequently been said that no man having the suffix “Mc'’ added to his name could ever expect to be crowned shooting king, but to-day the time-honored expres- sion must be relegated to the past. D. W. McLaughlin captured the day with & score ot 23, 17, 21; total 22 L. Bendel held the shooting king hon- ors lastyear, with a score of Me- Laughlin's score is 6 below this. The following are the scores in the proper order made yesterday by the mem- bers of the Calitornia Schuetzen Club in the yearly shoot for the selection of a shooting king: D. W. McLaughlin 22 2, J.
