1897, 12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, AUGUST 26, : : CHANCE! SOCIALISTS’ REMEDIES. At Two Meetings They Tell How to Improve Present Social Conditions. “Contrasted Ideals” was the subject of an address delivered on Sunday to the American branch of the Social:st party at Washington Hall by Comrade J. Martin. He dwelt upon the realized ideals of so- ciety as now organized, and showed their inferiority, from the $ocialistic point of view, to the ideals of the future, as the socialists hope to accomplish them. The Columbian branch of the Socialist party was addressed by Alfrea D. Cridge and George Cumming on the subject of proportional or preferential votin -, and during the evening a practical example of the workings of the system was given. Cumming is the man who introduced the lan into the elections of the Mechanics nstitute, where, he said, it bad proved satisfactory. He thinks that its introduc- tion into our political system would be sure to result in the securing of better men in office. The plan is to mark the ballots with a number opposite the name of each candiaate indicating the order of the voter’s preference, Cridge spoke of the introduction of the system into some of the States of Brazil, into Tasmania and New Zealand and the agitation of the question in Australia. ———————— HOTEL ARRIVALS.
