il HE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATURDAY, AUGUST 21 1897 SEVEN N ONE SHED. Heartrending Case of Desti- tution on the Bay Shore. The Father Was Once a Prosperous Druggist but Now He Seems Helpless. A pitiful case of destitution has been called to the attention of the police of South San Francisco and it is the more interesting because it involves five little children, besides the two parents. Liv- ing on the bay shore about 400 feet from the water, near the old Funck tannery, 1s the family of Edward McLaughlin, once a well-to-do drugsist, but now penniless and living on the churity of the people of that part of the City. Their habitation can scarcely be calied a house. Itismore of a shed, through which the winds pass without obstruction. It contains no furniture, not even a bed, the family sleeping on the fluor. A week ago the mother gave birth to a little girl, and during this trying ordeal her only covering was a pile of rags that in no way resembicd bedclothing. Dr. Simpson of the Potrero attended the sick woman, and in ail of his experience he never saw so much hunger, want and misery. Officer Eonis has kept them from starving for some time past, and at varicus times the people for a considera- ble distance around have been of great as- sistance to the family. The case was called yesterday to the attention of the Soclety for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Tne two older chiidren are boys, aged 10 and 8 vears. The girls are 6 and 4 years of age. The history of this family is interesting. As stated, McLaughlin was once a drug- gist and making money. Several vears ago he took up some land ncar Red Bluff and went to work with a will to improve it. "While so engaged he was siricken down by a sunstroke and has never bsen the same man since. He seemed to have lost all ambition and became addicted to drink. Still his wife clunz to him and the family increased, although he lost all he had. They came to this City again and went from one house to another, being ejected by every landlord under who=e roof they stopped. On Eighteeuth avenue the owner ot the house removed the doors end compelled them to vacate after they failed to take the chiliy hiat. This was about their experience in several pluces and at last they drifted to their present quarters, which, as stated, is not fit for a cowshed. McLaughlin has several well-to-do if not wealthy relatives in this City, but they can do nothing with him. His wife claims to be tbe daughter of old man Hunter, after wahom Hunters Point was named. o LIRS EXPEOTORATED IN A CAR. Wilson, an Architect, Forfeits His Bail of Five Dollars. L. R. Wilson, an architect living at 1201 Laguna street, was on a Sacramento-street cable-car Weduesday afternoon and ex- pectorated on the floor of the car as it was nearing Larkin street. Conductor George Gaffney stopped the car and instructed Poiiceman D. J. Daly to arrest Wilson for violating the ordinance. Wilson was taken to the North End Dolice station, where he was bookea and released on giving $5 cash bail. The case was called in Judge Joachim- sen’s court Tuursday morning, but Wi son failed to ajyrear the Judge de- clared his bail of $5 fcrieited. —————-— REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS. John aud Ada M.
