1z THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18, 1897. REAL ESTATE MARKET REVIEW Encouraging Reports Given of Sales and Building Affairs, Effect Produced in the Interior by the Good Price of Wheat. The Larger Transactions and Auc- tions—Review of the Records. Random Notes. What with the Klondike boom, the dis- covery of the Trinity gold fields, the ex- cellent prices now obtainable for wheat and the prospect for a fine crop of cereals and of citrus fruits, there can be little doubt that times in this State will soon start on the up grade at a good rate. And with good times there never fails to come an improvement in the real estate lLine. One of the most favorable indications is the fact that when any good piecs of land is offered for sale some shrewd buyer is always in the vicinity ready to mesh it. If the majority of them did not think that they can mnever buy cheaper and that prices are soon going to advance this could hardly be true. Wendeil E has just returned from a business trip through the interior of the State and the report of this prominent real estate broker is verv encouraging indeed of the condi- tion of affairs in the interior, and espe- cially of the San Joaquin Valley and the | Southern citrus belt. That times are improving is positively shown by the sales of real esiate that are being made. For instance, the People’s Home Savings Bank sold recently several parcels of realty that not a single satisfac- tory price was offered for during the last iwo years until the accepted ones were made. The bank has also disposed of a large tract of country property which it was forced 10 carry on account of the poor prices offered for real estate in general John L. and I¢ and E. A. Blocks in that iocality are worth at the pres- ent time all the way from $30,000 to $60,00 hough the price is not mentioned this transfer it is reasonable, at lesst, to_sup. pose that the minimum was received. It i currently believed that & row of one-story warehouses are to be built and the property or storage purposes. The bloek is pecu- fitiea Lo be 50 U d, as the rails of the Southern Pacific pass along the Seventh-street frontage. The news in the bui only is business proper this respect, but & num ere being impioved with handsome and spe- cicus structures right along. Several of most jmportant are mentioned elsewhere in these columns. REVIEW OF THE RECORDE During the past week seve < passed to record, agcrega teveuth, Ei in 1ding line is good. CHANGES IN TEXT-BOOKS house and siore, § The Grand Jury Will at Once Begin an Investiga- tion, Many COomplaints Have Been Made ! to the Committee on Publia Schools. The Grand Jury held a short session vesterday afternoon, but heard no wit- nesses. The time was passed in planning for future sessions and in considering ! topics which must engage the attention of the body. Many communications were referred to appropriste committees and avpointments were made for committee sessions. It transpires that the jury devote attention to the tax-levy and textbook changes. Numerous complaints regard- ing the change of books have been made to H. D. Keil, chairman of the Grand Jury committee on Board of Eiucation and | public schools. C. O Burton and J. R. Howell are members of this committee, The Grand Jury will have no difficulty in finding hundreds of witnesses who will readily testify that the course of the School Board in authorizing the changes made it necessary for them toexpend from $3 to $12 each to ou:fit their children with new school books. The burden of the change has fallen on the class of people | beas: able to sustain the load. Investigation will readiiy di-close the fact under oath that three prices are charged for some of the books. In using | the term three prices the meaning is that | a book for which 60 cents is charged can be profitably published for 20 cents. Shou!d the Grand Jury do nothing more it may render the public a :ervice by showing the profit which the book ring derives. Possibly the investigation may widen and deepen until the agents who were active in effecting the changes may be compelled to explain the arguments used to convince the Board of Education that such changes were necessary. ———— AN EX-PASTOR IN TROUBLE, Rev. John W. Ellis Arrested on a Charge of Defrauding an Inn- keeper. Rev. John W. Ellis, the ex-pastor of the Central Presbyterian Tabernacle, appeared in Judge Low's court yesterdav to answer acharge of detfrauding an innkeeper. The case was continued.
