THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, MONDAY, AUGUST 16, 1897 NOTES FOR THE NATIONAL GUARD The Engrossing Topic at This Time Is as to Life in Camps. A Circular That Has Been Sent Out by Companies C and G, the Nationals. The Veterans Think of Organizing a Uniformed, Armed and Equipped Company. At this time there is but little going on 1n | the National Guard circles outside of the matters connected with the camps. The first brigade has just completed its term of days on the tented field, and the third brigade went into camp at Santa Cruz yesterday. The offi cers of the First Regiment of tne Second bri gade have been busy for weeks making up the details for the stay in Camp Macdonald at Ukish. The regiment will leave for that point on Suturday, the 21st, and will remain in camp eight days. The camp will be pitched in a grove about 10 minutes’ walk from Ukiah and in such a manner thatall the tents will be in the shade. During the encampment there will be a company shoot for a trophy that has been offered by Colonel William Macdonald, for whom the camp has been nimed. Under the new order of things there will not be a regimental caterer as of old, but each compeany will have to furnish mess for iis own men, and for that purpose each company Las been furnished with a Buzzecot oven such as is used by companies in the regular army, This was understood to be the rule, but an ex- ception Las been made to allow Companies C and G (the Nationals) to mess together. This it is thought will create a littie feeling in the regiment. The Nationels, Companies C and G, have is- sued a circular letter to members and former members of the companies calling their atten- tion to the camp, in which appears the fol- O hSte will be a number of points of inter- estin the vicinily of the camp, viz.: Vichy Sprines, fish hatchery, insane asylum, Indian rancherie, Blue Lakes and Russian River. Make an effrt to go for a week or #s many days as possible. Transportation will he fur- nished members tray The way There will be no expense to members. Nationals have a minstrel show und for Friasy evening of camp.” The Veteran Nationsl Guard of Ceslifornia has been invited toattend Camp Macdonald, and the matter of accepting or aeclining the | invitation will be discussed at the quarterly meeting of the association to be held next Thursday. The veterans have under consideration the advisapility of forming a uniformed, armed and equipped company of Veterans. The as- sociation has in its new headquarters at Fourth street a picture of the first camp of tue State militia, held in 18¢ Corporal Edward Costello of Company A First Regiment Infantry, has at his own re quest been reduced to the ranks, The following iransfers in the First Regi- ment, Second Brigade, have been aporove and announced: Private Charles J. Weatn- erby, ( 1o Company C. to date from July 29, First Sergeant Harry J. Black- man, Cadet Company, to Company 1, as a pri- vate, to date from August 2, 1897; Private John Dierssen Jr., Company /%, to Company B, 10 aste from August 4. 1897; Private ward C. Dever, Company F. to Company M, to date August 6, 18! Musician Rob: Gibson of Company H has been appointed principal musician on the staff of Colonel J. F. Smith Since the issuance of previous orders from regimental headquarters there have been twenty-seven men discharged from the First Regiment Iufantry—nineteen on account of removal, four on two-thirds vote of the com- pany, two at expiration of term of service and Uwo for the good ol the service. As Brigadier-General Wsrfield will not be in the City during the encampment week of the First at Ukiah, Colonel Fairbanks, who will be in command of the brigade, wili probably visit the camp. The camp will also be visited by the division commauder and staff. The field officers of the First feel confident that the twelve companies will go tocamp with not less than forty men each, which, ex- clusive of the band of twentr-five pleces, will make 480 men. The field officers number five and the regimentai siaff eighteen. This would make a total o : It is probable that there would be a greater Tepresentation in the ranks but for the fact that at this time many of the men who are in employment are unable to absent them:e.ves for eight days in camp, but it is thought that many of these will be given an opportunity 1o | go to Ukiah tor three or four duys. The high-water mark in cricket run- | getting, so far as one-day local matches are concerned, was reached yestarday at Golden Gate in the match between the Pacific and Bohemian clubs. The Pacifics went in first, and with a | loss of seven wickets put up 231 rurs, | Dickinson, Myers, Seweil and G. Theo- i bald ail scoring heavily. The inning was | called at this point, Captain Dickinson naturally judging the total ample for vic- | tory. But the opposine_chief, Sloman, | upset this theory by carrying his bat for a | perfectly played 114, and was so well aided that when stumps were drawn the score registered 222 for five wickets. So the match resulted in a draw after a really in- teresting fight. The scores; | 1. Myers, c. Reeves, b. 51 | K. F’ Musson, b. Price 5 | F. Sewell, c. Sloman, b. Reeves 45 | | 3. McGaw, c.
