THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATURDAY, AUGUST 14 1897 e, THEE BRI B e e TRAVELING MEN OP N ARMS Opposed to the Idea of Pay- ing Deposits to the Railroad. Plans for Retaliation Being Dis- cussed by the Fra- ternity. Freight Will Be Routed so as to Give the Southern Pacific the Short Haul, Travelers for local merchants and resi- dent agents for Eastern firms are up in arms against the Southern Pacific Com- pany. Their cause of compaint is the order of the railroad company which went into effect August 1 requiring each purchaser | of a mileage ticket to make a deposit of | $10 or $15, according to the amount of mileage purchased. It 1s claimed by the railroad people that this precaution was made necessary to used mileage prevent the sale of partiall tickets by travelers to out ders. the new rule this is made impossible, as the deposit is made reternable only on the | presentation of the cover of the mileage- ook by the original purchaser. Tiese mileage-books are usually bought | by the firm, but the werchants do not teel disposed to advanc2 the deposit, and the traveling men are therefore now pelled to put up their own funds as a de- posit. It is this fact that has aroused | them. The feeling of resentment is most bitter | astern manu- | facturers, and they are already talking arrying out of they hope to compel the railroad compa among the local agents of over plans by the to rescind the objectionable orde:. their action is likely 1o be was outlined by an agent of a prominent Eastern manu- | facturing firm. “Al the men whose business it is to go on the road are indignant over this action said this zentle- man. *“It is looked upon as being of the of the Southern Pacific,’ most arbitrary chbaracter.
