12 THE ) ABOLISH TOLLROADS) A Proposition to Facilitate Travel Into the Yosemite. The Federal Government Will Be Asked to Make the Roads Free. Alluring Excursion Rates for the Sons Next Year. Native The Yosemite Commissioners at Mon- day’s meeting listened to the views of Commissioner Abbot Kinney, who had just returneud from the valley. He stated in substance that the present season was the best, so far as visitors were concerned, that the valley ever had. This he attrib- uted to the great influx of people who came to California because of the Chris- tian Endeavor Convention. Quite a num- ber of those took the opportunity to pay a visit to the valley. Tuere is one thing, however, that keeps thousands from mak- ing tne trip, and this is the annoyance and inconvenience of the numerous toll roads on the way. Todo away with this great nuisance he suegesied that a petition be forwarded to the Secretary of the Interior and also to | Coungress, requesting the purchase from the present toli-road company of its in- terest in the road, which is on United Siates property. If the proper showing were made to the Government, he be- lieved, the toll company would be made to get off, thus removing one of the greatest obstructions (o the making of the vailey a place for the whole people and not for the few who can afford to pay the exorbitant prices now charged. The re- ductions mace for the Christian En- deavorers proved that the high toll over the roads kept away thousands every year. Should the United States Govern- ment buy off the toll-road nuisance he had no doubt but the counties through which the roads ran would do likewise and thus make the entire journey iree. The effect of the increuse in travel this season so impressed Mr. Kinney that since his return he had consulted with several of the ofiicers and leading members of the Native Sons with the view of encouraging them to start excursions into the valley next year, and as an inducement to make it popular, the railroad comvany, he said, | sbouid be invited to co-uperate on the same lines as it did this year with the Endeavorers. To accomplish this end the following communication was drawn up and will be torwarded to the railroad authorities in time for that body to take action before the season of '95 opens. Captain T. H. Goodman, General Passenger Agent, Southern Pacific Railroad Company, San Flancisco, Cal—DEAR SIR: Referriug 10 a couversation had with you iu regard to popu- larizing the Yosemite Valley, increasing the travei to it and making tnis wonderful park a greater sttraction to the tourist, we beg 10 Sug- gesi the following line of aciion for nextyear: An excursion rate (0 Yosemite Valley from all points in California, commencing on June 15, 1896, and avai able until the season closes. I':e movement to be under the special aus ces of the order known as the “Native Sons of the Golden West.”” We believe that the rate should be open to ail persons in Californi From couversations had with members of the Native Sons, we believe that this order will take an active juterest in the movement and will organize excursions to the valley from each of its par.o These excursions would be made up of iriends, and cousequently wowid be more at- tractive thai meetings of strangers. Applications for such excursions from the various parlors could be <o segregated by their owu officers as 0 provide a practically constan: and regu ar stream of travel to the vailey for many months. The Native Sons have now 200 parlors in this State. There is atleastone parlor in every important town in Cnitfornia. The total membership is about 14,000, and s composed of active young men interesied in the advaucement of the S.ate. A very la ge vortion of these have never visited the Yosemite, but desire to do so. We be- | lieve that many, if not most, of these young Californians 4 only the stimulus of an organized movement and a cheap rate within their average means to go 10 the valley. There is & 50 at present & proposal 10 inaugn- rate a general annual field meeting of the Sierra Club, to be beld in Yosemite Valley for irom three io five days in July. We would suggesi that & special rate to | members of the Sierra Club for such a meet- ing would be advautageous to the Yosemite, to the transportation companies, and to the State as an advertising egency. The stages and hotels interested 1n such a movement, all by their proprictors or agents, look favorably on the suggestiions outlined. Upon u favorable reply, with the rates ac- cepiable to your company, we will arrange details with ihe other parties in interest,in case your compeny does not elect to do this, and after consultation with you, we wiil make definite and officiul propo-als for the move- ment, to the order of the Native Sonsand to the Sferra Club. We beg to cail the attention of the_railroad company to the heavy handicap the Yosemite travel now suffers, due to the hot, dusty and unintercsting ride through the foothiils to the timber line. A rairoad extension of about thirty miles from auy one o1 the several directions would, in the judgment of those ac- quainted with the situation, very greatly in- crease business of ell kinds connected with the Yosemite Valley and the National Park. Charles E. Baily, a member of the Sierra Club, was present and suggested to the commissioners that they select a sui:able site upon which the club might be per. mitted to erect a cottage to be known as the “Sierra Cottage.” Thecommissioners took a favorabie view of the proposition and promised Mr. Baily that they would look into the matter and let him know, A small force of men are now working in the valley cieaning up the grounds after the summer tourisis have left, MEETING NOTICES—Continued.
