10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11, 1897, - OSPITAL WORK WELL STARTED Miss Alexander Loses No Time in Beginning Her Task. Non-Sectarian Christian Assist- ance to Be Solicited to Make It a Success, Something About the Life-Work of the Lady Who Is Interesting Herself in the Matter. Miss L. Alexander yesterdav began her work of agitating the new hospital for in- d'gent Chinese and received the indorse- ment in it of Rev. Dr. Masters, who gave her a letter of introduction to the Chris- tian peovle of the City and warmly advo- cated her plan. When seen yesterday Miss Alexander was losing mno time aad ~nowed that she was no novice in the mat- | ter of working in a good cause. She hopes to get such support from the various churches and Christian Endeavor socie- ties that she will raise a sufficient fund to rent a suitable house and support the pa- She expects to have the services tients, of the phy ician donated and will own time without charge to looking after the hospital The min identified for years in mission work, give her high praise for her indefatigaole la- bors in that city, and when the St. An- drews Institute was dedicated there seven years #go, she was given all tae credit for the inception and completion of the mag- mificent building. Twenty vears ago Miss Alexander began a mission school in the worst part of the city of Toronto and from her efforts grew the school which 18 now maintained by the churches of that city. At that time it required no little courage for a woman to enter into the district where the school was established, for the place was known to :he papers and police as the resort of the rougnest and lowest | characters of the vicinity. But tie houses | were full of children, biz and little, and for their sakes, Miss Alexander resolved to undertake the work, difficuit and unplea: ant—even dancerous—as it might pe. How she succeeded there was told at the dedication of the building, and now she Las come to San Francisco to give the same energy and will to the work of ele- vating the Chinese. She has been hers but four years, all told, and in_that time | she has seen much of the suffering and horrible cruelties to which indigent Chi- nese of all ages and zexes have been sub- jected, and will now devote her time to the establishing of a place where they can be cared tor properly and saved from the terrib'e fate which has befallen so many of them. During the past three years she has known of many deaths occurring in those places called Chambers of Tranquiility. She has been instrumental in saving sev- eral who have been placed there to die, and through her efforts many rescues have been made by workers of the various missions in this City. She is entirely non- sectarian in her work and desires thut the hospital shall be of the same character. The Presbyterians and the Methodists bhave mssion-houses, where the Chinese girls and women are cared for, but tnere is no place where the indigent sick can re- c+ive attention, and she hopes to have all the various workers help in establishing | such a place. . — Broke His Right Leg. James Gannon, m painter living in Baden, found himself in 323 Eighth street last pight; why he cannot explain. As he was fgomg downstairs some one threw & bench at him, striking himon the rignt leg and breaking both bones. He was inken 1o the Receiving Hospital in the patrol wagon. THE STOCK MARKET.
