12 T HE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATURDA AUGUST 7, 1897 Qe .. TN T B e Tl et . - G00D PRICES FOR GRAPE] Wine - Makers' Corporation Can Handle the Entire Crop. H. J. Crocker Now at the Head of the Organization as President. Considerable New Capital Has Been Secured—Farmers to Sell to an Advantage. For several months past the fortunes of the grape-growers and winemakers of this Sta‘e have been in the balance. While the grape-zrowers were unanimous in their desire to co-operate with the wine- makers and deliver them all of their grapes, the latter having their cooperage nearly full from wine of 1896 and older, it was feared that they could not take care of the large crop of grapes which was | maturity. It was necessary, therefore, to enlarge wineries, increase cooperage and double the machinery. To do this capital was requirei, and the board of directors of the California Wine- makers’ Corporation has been straining every nerve for the past few months to obtain financial assistance, so that they might be able to supply the winemakers witn the money necessary with which to increate their plants and to pay for the grapes. Their labor has been finally crowned with success. They bave com- vleted arrangements by which all the money required for the crushing of every pound of grapes which may be produced this year in California will pe supplied on demand. At a special raeeting of the board of di- rectors cf the California Winemakers’ Corporation held yesterday Colonel Her- man Bendel, on acceunt of other imper- tant business, tendered his res’gnation as pre-ident and director of the corporation. Henry J. Crocker was then elected di- rector and president of the corporation by acclamation. Mr. Crocker in accepting the office stated that he was greatly in favor of maintaining and, if possible, im- proving the viticultural industry of this State as well as any other industry of Cali- fornia and said: 1believe the grape-grower who has had the enterprise to. set out his vineyard. the pa- tience to wait for the growing of his crop, with all the risks attached 1o this industry, should receive a fair remuneraiion for his labor and capital invested. 1 believe that the wine- maker who has erected the wine-c:llar and procured machinery at large expens: and brought to the industry the intelligence re- | nearing quired in making and curing the fine wines, which Le has demonstrated 1o the world can be produced in Califorhia, should receive a isir remuneration for his enterprise, labor and capital iovested in his 1 believe, also, that the wine-dealer who has, through his enterprise, introduced our wines not only throughout ihe United States but alco in the adjoining republics aud even in | Europe, 1o coinpete with the wines of Italy and France; the wine-dca'er who, in order to | properly transact his business, is under heavy expense, is compelled to bava large ledger ac- counts, which rre not always available when Tequired. I belicre that he is misoentitled 10 & fair remuneration for bis enterprise, capital | and risks attached to his business. By the brief conversation which I have had | with every one of the board of directors of | the Winemakers' Corporation I have seen that we are s unitin the desire to equitably divide the profits which m derived from the viticultural industry between the grape- grower, the winemaker and the wine-deaser. 1t js not oniy the desire of the persons di- rectly interested, but it is also the wish of the bankers, financial men and that of evéry per- son who has the progressand success of the viticu'tural industry of theStateof California atheart. With the laudable object we have | in view, of doing harm to none, but good to all, our corporation I can assure you will re- ceive all the financial aid which it may re- quire for the proper taking care of the grapes | and wine not oniy this year, but of years 1o | come, which will ‘enabie the 'winemaker who has smbition to keep, age and improve his wine lodo soand enable him tosupply our customers with as good wine ascan be ob- tained in any part of the world. When we remember that the State of Caii- fornia is the only State in the Union where the true wine grape will grow, und the only State, therefore, where fine wine can be pro- duced: when we look around us and find our lezitimate customers of 70000000 within our own boundaries and 30 000,000 people in our neighborhood; when wesec that while France produces 1,000,000.000 gulions o wine per annum, while i1 this Stute we barely produce 20,000,000 galions per annum; when on sccount of our large territory, the simiiar- ity of the soil and ciimate, we know that we c°n produce in this State also 1,000,000, 000 gallons of wine per annum jus: as good as that which can be produced in any part of the world, 1 cons.der it the duty of every good ciiizen to help bring up this important indus- 1ry, so that the time may come when the wine industry of Calitornia will be to thisState what the wine industry of France isto that favored country. With these aims in view I cheerfully accept the honor which you have tendered me, and 1 doubt not that with your assistance we will bring up the Winemakers’ Corporation 1o be one of the most successiul institutions in the State of California. The board of directors unanimously ap- proved the sentiments expressed by Crocker, and immediately appointed a committee to receive such offers as may | be tendered for the wines in the hands of the corporation. prepared to furnish the necessary capital which may be required toevery Wine- muker of the State belonging to the Wine- makers’ corporation, for the purpose of enlarging their wine capacity and taking care of the grape cror ot the State. The officers of the Winemakers’ Corpor- ation are now as follows: H. J. Crocker, president; P. C. Rossi, vice-president; W. J. Hotchkiss, secretary and manager; directors—John H. Wueeler, B. W. Pax- ton, C. F. Montealegre, Peter Ball, H. B. Chase, D. M. Delmas. In the absence of Vice-President Rossi from the City, A. Sharboro of the Italian-Swiss Colony acied in his place. Mr. Sbarboro in discussing the situation said: This furnishing of capital is of more impor- tance than many may suppose. We are now able to insure the grape-growers the value of their grapes—what they are sctually wortb. Thatis to say, the winemakers will pay the farmer for his grapes 1 per ton for every cent per gallon that the wine will sell for in the market. By the concentiation of the wine in the haods of the Winemskers' Corpora- tion the wine is expected to bring from 15 to 20 cents per gallon, in which event the growers will receive from $15 to $20 per ton for their grapes. This is tiie sysiem adopied in many of the European countries and it has met with suceess SONOMA'S PIPE ORGAN. Dedication of a Beautiful Instrument in the Town of the * ‘Bear Flag.’ The Congregational Church of Sonoma, organizea more than twenty-five vears ago, has just been presented with a hand- some pipe organ. It was dedicated Friday evening, Juiy 30, with an organ recital by ‘Miss Kate I, Hutchinson of 8an Francisco, whose seleclions were well adapted to show the compass of the new instrument. The audience room was filled with appre- ciative listeners who heartily encored the numbers, The instrumental numbers were interspersed with four voeal solos by Miss Claire Hope, who sang “The Good Shepherd,” *:For All Eternity,” *Day Dream,”” ana ‘Flee as a Bird to the ‘Mountan.” Miss Hutchinson’s numbeys were “‘Bar- carole,” by Bennett, a march by Ousley, and one by Wallis, two _numbers by Sal- ome, & wedding song by Dupoi-, two short | Mrs EJ rlint_sacto Mr. | The corporation is now | andante by Silas, Schumann’s “Trau- merei,” and *Cavalleria Rusticana,” by Mascag The organ was presented to the church by Mrs, Sophia T. Ciaig in memory of her husband, O:iver W. Craig, as is set forth on a smail, handsome etched vrass plate on one of the panels of the organ. The beautitul ornamenta.icn of the pipes, with gilding and dainty tints, the casing of highly polished quartered oak, uand, above al , the sweet toues of the ir strument, with its special sweetness in the solt effegts, make it eminently adapted to vart of its work in accompaniments, while the swell organ in its large compass gives scope for the most elaborate voluntary. To fitly match th1s new and useful ten- ant the audience-room has been tastily papered and renovated throughout. lev. Charles E. Chase is pastor of the church. 01 sunday morning, August 1, the organ was specially dedicated to its use in wor- ship, William H. Hyde Jr. acting as or- ganist, The pastor’s address had siecial re’erence to the influence of music ard its proper place in religious services. In the evening a large audience, mainly of young people, gathered sgain to listen to the organ harmonies and to take part in sacred song. Mrs. H. H.
