10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, FRIDAY, AUGUST 6, 1897. e e e s DEDICATING A NEW WIGH AN Ceremonies by the Great Council of California at Elmhurst, The New Edifice Is One of the Most Imposing in That Thriving Town. Proceedings of the Great Council of Red Men of the Degree of Pocahontas. | The event in the circle of improved Order of Red Men of the reservation of California vesterday was the dedication of the new wigwam of Comanche Tribe at Elmbhurst, in Alameda County. The wig- wam 1s located in a neat two-story frame building at the corner of the San Leandro road and Mountain View nue, baving a frontage of 65 feet on the San Leandro | road, with a denth of 55 feet on the ave- nue. There are three stores on the ground Hoor, with nine iig-rooms in the rear, | and on the upper floor there a council chamber and alarge assembly hall with stage. There are also a number of small rooms that are necessary in the conduct- | ing of the affairs of the tribe. 1t wascom- | menced last April, and was completed, including the iurnishing, at a cost of $5200. The building is a credit to the town of Elmhurst, and a monument of ie enterprise of Comanche Tribe. Out- side of the large building in San Francisco and the builaing of the tribe in Fort Bragg, in Mendocino County, it is the most pretentious building erected by Red Men in the reservation of Californi A special train of five cars of the Hay- | wards electric line reached Elmhurst shortly before 3 o’clock in the afternoon, bearing the yreat chiefs of the council of tne Order of Red Men and the greatchiefs of the Degree of Pocahontas, together witn the representatives of both orders and a few specially invited guests, in all about 150. There were at the hall the members of Comanche Tribe and the | members of Minnewawa Council and | many of the residents of the town. After the council hall, which had, by the ladies of Minnewawa Council, been tastefully decorated with beautiful flow- ers, was filled to its seating capacity, Wil- liam J. Keating, the district deputy, an- pounced that the grand officers were in | waiting to dedicate the wigwam, and they were admitted. There were Great Sachem Josiah Sims, Great Prephet A. Jackson, Great Mishenawas G. W. Lovie, Benjamin F. Josselyn, J. G, Smith and O. F. Seavy, each wenring the rich regalia of the order, the last four named each carrying a club. They were escorted to their respective stumps, and at the requesi of the great sachem the entire audience rose and sang merica.” | Then the great prophet, with ceremonial | impressiveness, in accordance with the ritual of the order, d-dicated the new wig- wam to freedom, friendship and charity in the name of the order«nd for the pur- poses thereolf. After that each of the mishenawas, who occupied stations repre senting the four points of the compass, proclaimed in the north, south, east and west that the wigwam uad been solemn- ly dedicated, and as each made the proclamation he laid his war club along- s de of the council fire in the center of the wigwam, and when the last one had been laid the four formed a diamond. The great prophet completed the ceremony by sprinkling the four corners of the dia- mond and proncuncing the words of the ritual. Then followed a talk by the great sachem, who complimented the tribe upon the grand editice it bad erected and wished the tribe prosperity. He was followed by Grove L. Johnson, & prominent member of the order, who delivered an eloquent oration, and then Benjamin F. Josselvn gave a long talk that was full of most ad- mirable thoughts. The ceremonies were closed by the great chiefs assembling at the council fire and giving the grand hon- ors and the singing of ‘“America” by the audience. A recess was declared and the party ad- journed to tne front of the buiiding, where all were photographed in a group by Jacob Fowzer, who is prominent in the conncils of the order. Aiter that there was a ban- quet, at which there was speech-making and 'the ladies of Minnewawa Council were particularly mentioned for the good work they had done in assisting the mem- bers of Comanche Tribe in the erection of its new home. The chiefs of Comanche Tribe are: F. B. Vost, sachem; P. Barbin, senior saga- more; A. Goess, junior sagamore; C. H. Huntsman, prophet; W. B. Zimmerman, chief of records; M. S. Shaw, keerer of wampum; A. S. Lewis, first scout; J. Sills, second scout; H. Morgan, first warrior; M. D. Silver, second warrior; Charles Critchlow, third warrior; Charles Tarb fourth warrior; T. D. Ballard, first brave; W. Swalley, second brave; Charles Skelly, third brave; S. Bessell, fourth brave; H. Meyer, guard of wigwam; H. C. Brown, guard of the forest. The building committee that turned the edifice over to the great officers was: A. C, Malone, M. Show, H. Meyer, W. F. Kru- ger. M. Nulty and'J. Skelly. The ladies who had charge of the pre- paring of the council hail and arranged the banquet were: Mrs. W. H. Higgins, Mrs. Downey, Mrs, Thomas Sawyer, Mrs. H. Clayton, Mrs. Goess and Mrs. Carter. At 6 o'clock in the evening a team from San Francisco conferred the Haymakers’ degree on a number of candidales and | after that there was a ball, which con- | tinued until late in the night. At the session of the Great Council of Red Men yesterday forencon the great sachem decided that when a tribe su renders its charter all the property that it may be possessed of as tribal property re- verts to the Great Council in trust for the order. This includes regalia, riiuals books, money and buildings, if any. X The committee on laws and usages re- ported that benefits accrue to a man from and after 8ix months after a membar was adopted into a tribe. Colonel A. Andrews, George W. Lovie and Charles F. Burgmun were appointed a committee to prepare a letter of thanks 10 the four local councils of the decree of | Pocahontas, namely Daughters of Monta- | zuma, Alferata, Pocahontas, and for the | kinaly manner in which they entertained iherepresentatives to the Great Counci!. The committee on home for aged Red | Men and for orphans of Red Men, consist- ing of delegates from the trives, was em- powered to incorporate under the laws of the State, and then take the stevs looking toward the establishment of such an in- stitution. is Sl DEGREE OF POCAHONTAS. ‘The Great Chlefs for the Current Term Are Raised Up. The principal business transacted at the morning session of the Great Council of the Degree of Pocahontas yesterday morn- ing was the naming of the appointed offi- cers for tbe current term. These are: i J Williams, Oakland | W50 by N | wigwam, Mrs. Annie Bishop of Nevada c ; great guard of the forest, Mrs. Kiske of Grass Valley. These, together with the elected chiefs, were raised up in a very impressive and hichly creditable manner by Miss Mabel Curtis, acting as great chief, assisted by Mrs, L. J. Pinkbam as great prophetess and Mrs. Bean as great past chief. The council fire was extinguished at noon to give the great chiefs and the representatives an opporiunity to go to Eimhurst, and be present at the dedica- tion of the new wigwam there. The session will close this forénoon, and the next Great Council wili be held 1n_the same place 1n which the Great Council of Red Men will be held. A pleaging feature of the Great Council was the ‘harmony that prevailed during the deliberations. Another pleasant fea- ture was the manner in which the local councils entertained the representatives and the repre-entatives to the Great Coun- cil of Red Men. HOTEL ARRIVALS.
