. THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4, 1897 s ' THE eAN.FRANCISGO GALL WEDNESDAY, AUGDST 4 e @ ANCE:! _rore onavom. JUDGE KERRIGAN HAS RESIGNED 111 Health Obliges Him to Give Up Cycling Interests. He Will Not Again Be Presi- dent of the Bay City Wheelmen. ; New Club in San Jose to Be Known as the Garden Oity Wheelmen. Jadge Frank H, Kerrigan has resigned his position as chairman of the member. <hip committee of the associated clubs. This step was made imperative by his fast-failing health. It has been the Judge's custora afrec u hard day’s session at the City Hall to spend his leisure time often far into the night in corresponding with local consuls and attending to the immense amount of work required to be donein his department. The strain was too much for him, and recently he went to the country for a short rest. He re- turned the latter part of last week but lit- tle recuperated, and has been obliged to go away again. His physician says he must give up some of his many interests, ana the association will therefore lose one of its mos: active workers. President Swain will appoint Judge Kerrigan’s successor this week. He has not intimate! whom he will select. Thoe office is a very important one, requir- ing & man with a great deal of energy and ability, ana he will take time in making th- solection. Judge Kerrigan’s third terin as president of the Bay City Wheelmen will expire ina month, and he will nou be a candidate for re-glection for the same reason that has ne- cessitated his withdrawal from active par- ticipation in the association’s affairs. Nothing would please the members better than that Mr. Kerrigan shouid govern the destinies of the big Golden Gate avenue institution for another term, but_he will have to firmly refuse the honor. Much of the club’s phenomenal success socialiy and in the racing zames during the past few years must be attributed to Judge Kerrigan's personal interest in it and the enthu-iasm he inspired among the mem- | bers, and hisguiding hand will be greatly mi sed in the future, A new clab is to be organized at San Jose | to be known as the Garden City Wheel- men. Some prominent members of the Guarden City Cyclers, now in insolvency, gat together the other night and decided 1pon this move. A formal meeting will be beld to-night to elect officers. All old members of the Cyclers will be admitted to the charter rolf if they so desire, T.e Garden City Cyclers are virtually deaa. The Sheriff’s lock was put on the door a week ago Siturday night. The club has filed a voluntary petition in in- solvency, much against the wishes of | many of the members, however, who felt tuat their financial matters could have been raised and their debts eventually paid. The new club now being organized will be less pretentious, have smalier ex- penses and no social members, and shouia succeed. Before the cvclers’ club failed they gave up their interest in the three-lap cement track at San Jose to the railroad company which owns it. As it is now, therefore, the new club, or any club for that matter, can hold race meets on it by giving a per- centage to the owners. Tuereicre, there need be no fear that there will not be any more racing on the famous San Jose oval. Fred Russ Cook of the Bay City Wheel- men left on the steamer Willameite last Suturday for Juneau, Alaska, his destina- tion being the goldtelds. Ten vears ago Cook was the champion bicychst and swimmer of the coastand helu the world’s records for a quarter-mile and twenty-four hours on a high wheel. He has not raced -since 1890, but has always used the wheel since for business and pleasure. Charles J. Wikidel, who successfully managed the cycle show and indoor tour- nament hers in the spring of 1896, is again in the City. He has been trauveling exten- sively since he left here, and 1s now bound a. He will leave next Monday morning. Meanwhile Mr. Wikidel is re- newing his many acquaintances in the cycle trade and clubs, C. Michener, whose serious illness was reported a week ago, is somewhat im- proved. He suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which he is gradually recovering, and his friends hope he will soon be en- tirely well again. Fraciured His Skull. Mark McKenna, while standing on a ladder at the Union Iron Works on Monday painting the steamer San Blas, slipped and fell, striking on his head. He was taken to the Receiving Hospital where it wus lound that his skull McKenna iives at Jones and CROCKETT LODGE NO. 139, F. and A M.—Stated meeting THIS WEDNESDAY at 7:30 P. M.
