2 1 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, JULY 22 1897 CHAMPION PUGILISTS. Dixen and Hawkins Are Now at Welght and Ready to Step on the Scales. Considerable interest is taken by the sporting fraternity in the Hawkins and Dixon match, which will be decided to- morrow evening in Mechanics' Pavilion. The betting, which was even a few days ago, has vnderwent a change, and now Dixon is favorite at slight odds. There are any number of keen sports who have great confidence in Hawkins' abillty to whip Dixon. Th-y contend that Hawkins fs a much younger man than Dixon, and that he has never been thor- ourhly tested. Thev also believe that the local man is just as clever as his colored op: onent, and that ke is master of a blow which can floor a heavy-weight : The believers in Dixon’s ability to whip any man of his weight in the world are many, but they have very little to say. Their money speaks for itself, and they are willing to place large amounts of it at odds of $10 to $8, with Dixon on the long end. Both pugilists are in fine condition and sbould put up & good fight. According to an agreement they will meet to-morrow evening at 6 . M. in Mechanics’ Pavilion and weigh in. Neither man must weigh over 128 pounds, and Hawkins’ trainer states that the local man is now ready to wei-h in. Dixon will scale something like 125 poands, and he will fight strong at that weight. The contest will be called at 8 p. M. sharp. AulictoE B b Captain W. L. Merry Goes East. Captain W. L Merry, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Central Amer- ica, will depart this evening for Washington. He makes the trip in response to instructions relative to his duties as representative of the United States. He will be gone about sixteen dnys, and during his absence R. D. Perry will officiate as secretary of the Chamber of Com- me ce. The quarterly meeting of this body will probably not be held until the return of Captain Merry. . THE STOCK MARKET.
