2 1 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, JULY 21, 1897. A2 s e e e e R e e e el e ) s e e Y i isp o usb el L L Y e e e e o e ol NOW AEADING FOR VISAL Reedley Has Been Reached and Passed by the Valley Road. Second Annual Meeting of the Trustees of the Com- peting Line, Reports of the Year's Work Submitted by the Secretary and Engineer. In the absence of Claus Spreckels, who is away recuperating, John D. Spreckels presided yesterday at the second annual meeting of the trustees cf the Valley road. Reports were submitted by Secretary Alexander Mackie and Chief Engineer Storey of the results of the work during the past year. After the reports had been read the trus- tees re-elected ail the old members of the board of directors, and these in turn re- elected the former officers of the company. The officers and directors are as foliows: President, Claus Spreckels; vice-president, Robert Watt; secont vice-president, Cap- tain A. H. Payson; Charies Holbrook, John D. Spreckels, J. B. Stetson, Leon Sioss, Thomas Magee, Isaac Upham, Al- vinza Hayward, J. A. Hooper. Some interesting facts and figures were given in the report of Chief Engineer | Storey. At theend of last year, June 30, | 1896, 82.2 miles of track on the main road head been laid and 6.1 miles of sidetrack) were in place, making 83.3 miles in all At the conclusion of the second year of the road’s existence it haa 188.6 miles of track down on its main line and 2152 miles of siding, making a total of 210.12 | miles. In other words, during the year ending June 30, 1897, the road, under the able supervision of Engineer Storey, had constructed 121.82 mules, or about 50 per cent more than tae year previous. In connection with the construction | work the company has built more than 3000 feet of bridging, including severai large, handsome structures across the various rivers that had to be crossed. During the past year two roundhoases | were built, eight depots were put up at as many points, many freight platforms and stock corrals were constructed, and 116 miles of telegraph line were built in con- | neciion with the Postal Telegraph Com- | pary. | Adaitions were made to the equipment of the road during the same period as fol- lows: Four freight locomotives, three passenger locomotives, one hundred box- cars,: one hundred stockcars, nine pas- | senger coaches and three combination | beggage and passenger coaches. The totul equipment of the road is now as fol- | lows: Seven freight locomotives of 65 tons each, three passenger locomotives, | 250 flatears, 100 boxcars, 100 stockcars, nine passenger cosches and tbree combi- nation baggage and passenger coaches. | The first regular trains over the road | were put on January 24, 1897, and to-day the line is being operated some way be- yond Hanford, 2 distance of more than two hundred miles. | Track was laid to Reedley yesterday, and is now being laid toward V salia, which point will be reached notlater than | the midale of Augusi. Owing to right of way matters not_being in shape to con- tinue work into Kern County, it is not ex- pected to reach Bakersfield in time to move year's crop from that point.
