THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, MONDAY, JULY 19, 1897. FORTY HOURS OF ADORATION Extended Services Being Held at St. Patrick’s Church. The Devotion Began Yesterday and Will End To- Morrow. Sermons Preached Appropriate to the Ocoasion and Masses Said Every Day. The services of the forty hours adora- tion began at St. Patrick’s Church yester- i | day morning and the devotions will con- tinue until to-morrow morning. The beginning of the services of adora- tion was tne celeoration of solemn b mass at half-past 10 o’clock. carrying flowers and boys wearing sashes bearing candles. Behind them came the three priests with the blessed sacrament. Rev. P. J. Keane acted as celebrant, Rev J. Quinn as deacon, and Rev. J. Brennan as sub-deacon at the services which fol- lowed. Rev. Father Quinn delivered the sermon and the music of the mass wasun- der the direction of Professor J. H. Dohr- mann, the organist of the church. In the evening there were vespers at half-past 7 o'clock, Rev. J. Brennan | preached the sermon and the services for the day were closed with the benediction of the blessed sacrament. The only public devotions to-day will be at half-past 7 o'clock this evening, when the rosary will be recited and there will be a sermon by Rev. Father Keane. The celebration of so'emn high mass to- morrow morning at 8 o'clock will con- clude the devotion. St. Patrick’s is beaurtifully decorated for the occasion, and there has been a large attendance at all of the meetings. The forty hours’ adoration is a service which each Catholic churck in this City holds once every year, and every Sunday some church in the City begins the ser- vices. The devotions are in honor of biessed sacrament, and it is exposed for special adoration during the entire forty hours. Ordinarily it is ouly expused at certain specitied services. When a church is celebrating the adora- | tion there are always a number of exira public services, The devotions, howeve: do not stop here, for during the 1wo days the church is constantly open for mem- bers to worship in private, and people are | entering and leaving the church all the time. Next Sunday has been assigned to St. Mary’s Church as a day to begia a forty hours’ adoration. The jubilee services will be solemn high mass at 11 o’clock, | sermon by Rev. Father Powers; a session of the blessed ~acrament and a sermon ap- propriate to the occasion in the evening. Monday morning there will be a mass for peace at 9 o’clock, and a sermon im the evening. Solemn hizh mass and a pro- cession of the blessed sacrament will con- clude the services Tuesday morning. Last week the Young Men’s Society of St. Patrick’s parish elected as officers President, Wiiliam A. Dresiin; first vice presiient, J. Lynch; second vice-presi- dent, Jobn Laney; recording secretary, Wiliam T. Flynn; financial secretary, J. F. O'Brien; marshal, M. Boden. The society has about 200 members and is in & very flourishing condition. TO 4 SMALL 4UDIENCE. Senator Morgan 7Talks About the Union Pucific Liens WASHINGTON, July 18 — Yesterday was a remarkably dull and oppressively sultry day in the Senate chamber. It was only with difficulty that a bare quorum got together once, and then an executive session was held, continuing for two nours. The remainder of the day was consumed in the de'ivery of a speech by Senator Morgan in support of his resolu- | tion requiring the President to take steps for the payment or clearing off of all liens on the Union Pacific Railway paramount to that of the Goverment with the object of having the railway owned and operated by the Government. Daring most of the three hours occupied by the speech the chamber was practically deserted, there being but one Senator (Thurston) seated on the Republican side and only half a dozen on tue Democratic side, but the absence of an audience had no apparent influence upon Morgan. He went on smoothly, fluently and impressively, as if all the Benators were in their seats and honoring him with the closes: attention. Without concluding his speech, Morgan called for a motion to ad journ, and at 5:30 the Senate adjourned tili Monday. —_—————— HOTEL ARRIVALS, GRAND HOTEL R W Buckley, Nasuville V N Hartley, Vacaville E P Cowen, Anges W H Conkiin, Veniura Miss T Vandewater, 11l Mi,s C Dyer, Chicago C E Thompson & w,0hio Mrs Mathews, Siduey, O Mrs McCasiiv, Sidney, O Mrs Charters, Sidney, O Miss Marshall, Sidoey,O B Weck, Jersey Ciiy R Harris, Rocklin W A Marshall, Pledmont W Waben, Saclo H ) ansing, Stockton H C Hansel, Stockion W H Beanett, Stockton F M Phelps, Los Ang W L Price, Los Ang A T Goucher, ~an Diego C E Wilber.
