12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATURDAY, JULY 17, 1897 WHEAT GOES STEADILY OF California Farmers Playing in Big Luck This Year. Prices Have Increased Rapidly for the Last Three Months. A Shortage in the Crops in India, France and Auastralia th Cause. The rise in the price of wheat the past three months has sent a thrill of joy through the California farmers. The quotations at the close of yester- day’s sales were such as to give assurance that there will be no setback. The mar- ket closed firm at §1 324 per cental on May wheat. Thisis an increase of 12 to 14 cents per cental during the past three morths. The seazon opened with new wheat at from $1 1734 to §1 20, since when the price has steadily advancad until yes- terday at the quotations given. The mar- ket closed strong. This advance in the San Francisco board is only keeping pace with the foreign market. The reserve from the old ‘96 crop i however, at a minimum all over the| world, while the ’97 crop which has just | addition to this the French crop of 1897 | begun to be housed is not coming into ithe market as rapidly as was expected. In is woefully deficient. This will throw France into the market as an importer, as thas country is a very large consumer of whear, and it is expected that they will naturally look to the United States for their supplyv. Severai shiploads of wheat having been shipped from here to Chile and Brazil, and this in 8 measure muy acccunt for this condition of the local market. The last twelve months has shown that , the wheat crop in the western hemisphere | has been short. This, with a very snort | crop in India, causes all countries to look to the United States for a supply, and the | prospects are very bright that th+ Ameri- can farmer will be the gainer this year. Barley 1s affected by the wheat market, end consequently bas gone up with the wheat rise. It is considered by members of the Prod- uce Exciange that the end is not yatin | the advance on the price of wheat for the May deliver. HOTEL ARRIVALS.
