12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, FRIDAY, JULY 16, 1897 STRIKING THE BALANGE SHEET | Financial Benefit From the; Great Convention ,‘ Shown, : More Than Two Million Dollars Was Brought Into This | State. | Al | San Francisco Is a Good Convention | City and Is Able to Enter- tain AlL The committee of '97 had a meeling last night for the purpose of auditing | bills, and it was found impossible to zo through the mass that had accumulated, but good progress was made. Many of the members ure worn out with the jabor attending the work during the Christian Endeavor convention and will | J leave this morning for a few days’ rest. The remainder of the bills will be attend- ed to as early as possible and it is expect- ed that all the business of the commuitee will be closed up within two or three | weeks. The committee has money ample for all bills and will probably have a surplus. Until the bilis are all audited the exact status cannot be asceriained, but the members think there will be quite a good surplus. Just what will be done with | this will not be decided until the amount | is ascertained. Itis to be left with the| subscribers to say what disposition will | be made of the extra. Itistheexpres- sion of the committee that, unlessthe | overplus is very large, it will be given to | some charitable object to be named by | the subscribers. If the amount is very | large it is possible that a dividend may be declared smong the subscribers. The committee is well pleased with the | results of the convention from a financial standpoint and ihink that the estimate of THE CaLL that the visitors left a round nillioa doliarsin the City outside of rail road fares is none too large. Some place | the estimate as too small and say that the | amount will far exceed that enormous | sum. | Lo order to-ascertain as near as possile | the financial benefits accruing from the | convention, investigations were made | among the hotels, restaurants, boarding and rooming housee ana all business | houses that would feel the eifects of an | increasea trade from such an influx of | ihese visitors, and then the sireetcar lines and places of entertainment, and it | was estimated that in additon to the 35,000 people registered as members of the | convention there were fully 15,000 other | visitors who took advantage of the cheap | rates and visited the City. This places | the total at 50,000 visitors. Each of the nirst-class hotels was crowded | to the limit with people who paid first- | class rates for theentire eight days. All| the other hotels in overflowing, and boarding and rooming houses were also filied to such an extent | | 1 Jacobsor the City were filled to | _ GRAND HOTEL. & Barghous, Spokene H B Gillis, Yrek+ Mrand Mrs Edger. CALIFORNIA COMMANDERY No. 1, K. 1., Masonic 1emple, Post that mauy private houses were opened to | 83d Montgumery sts—Regylar assembly receive temporary guests. Of these fully 1000 paid an averase of §4 a day for hotel alone for eightdaysora| total of $32,000. Two thousand averaged | $2 50 per day for the same length of time a total of $40,000. Twentv thou-and aver- aged $150 uay, a toial of $240,000. Twent seven thousand averaged $1a day, a total of $216,000, making a toial paid to hotels, boarding-nouses and resiaurants of $528.- | 000. | During the week the streetcar lines and ferries incressed their business between | $40,000 and $50,000, and the places of amusement and interest, such as the Chiff House, Satro's Baths and similar places, received about the same amount, while it is estimated that $50,000 was spent for souvenirs and - curios. Some place the, | estimate on thisitem at twice thatamount, Chinatown received a large amount, ana it is estimated that not less than $100,000 were left there either with guides or in the stores. In addition to the amounts spent for rleasure and in catering to the wants | of the inner man 1t is known that severai | thousand dollars were given in charity 10 various institutionsand needy persons. 1t all the various little incidental ex- penses of travelieisis added to these es mates it will readily be seen that the roillion-dpllar estimate is,” if auything, | 100 smail. In order to entertain and care for thi< preat crowd it was found that jully 3000 people were given employment during the week who, otherwise, would have been idle, and in this channel not less than $30,000 went directiy to the work- ing people wno were needingit, while about twice as many other working peo- ple Teceived extra wages drring the rush. The grocery-stores, butchers, frait- dealers, provision men of all kinds, as well as furniture dealers and dry-goods houses received direct benefit, and thnis million dollars was filtered through the | channels of trade so thatevery business | in the City felt the new money. In addition to the City of fan Francisco | the State at larze was greatiy benefited, | and it is estimated that with the railroads and the various outlying points of inter- est in the State fully $1,000,000 niore was spent, making a grand total left by the | Endeavor crowd of $2,000,000. The people ot San Francisco subscribed for the entertainmen: of the convention $25.000 and will have sorae of it left, so it is seen by the balancing of the books that | the credit of $1,975,000 is due to the con- | vention, in add:tion to ihe widespread ad- vertisement the State aud City wil re- | ceive at the hands of the thousands of vis- ‘ | itors who went home well pleased with the convention and their treatment. The convention aemonstrated two | things. First, that San Francisco can en- tertain any sized convention and care for as many pecple as desire o come; second, | thata convention isa good financial in- | 1897, ~are as follow vestment for the cily which invites1t. | Cronils Bge 8 geati: 3 4 i ye Nadle Narez, Lobinson, a.e 10 month HOTEL ARRIVALS, ‘ PALACE HOTEL. !
