14 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATURDAY, JULY 10, 1897 — S VICTIY WERE JEWELERS Operated in Many States. His Wife Was Discouraged and Wished to End Her Life. She Thought Under New Conditions | in the Far West Ho Would Reform. Detectives Gibson and Wren yesterday succeeded in landing a man with a record, and the news of his capture will carry joy to several jewelers throughout the length and breadth of the land. The man’s name (at least the most plausible name that could be picked out from half ascore or so of aliases used in various parts of the country) is William Lodtman. Hi specialty is passing spurious crafts drawn upon Eastern newspapers, and his vic- tims seem to be exclusively jewelers. Lodtman and his wife arrived in this City Sunday, and he took pains to let 1t ve known that he was a newspaper adver- tising man. He was affable, and succeeded in making several acquaintances, whom he used to introduce him toa number of business concerns. The first of his operations, so far as the police could learn, was with Hammer- smith & Field. Lodiman succeeded in se- curing from this firm a diamond ring, for which he tendered & araftdrawn upon the Eagle Publishing Company of Philadel- phia, Pa. His next victim was H. Kann, an optician under the Chronicle building. From Kihn the allezed newspaper man secured a pair of field glasses, for which he tendered a draft similar to the one given Hammersmith & Field, but for $20. I'he glasses were worth about $6, znd Kahn accepted the draft and paid the dii- ference. From Clabrough, Golcher & Co. Lodtman obtained a fine Smith & Wesson revolver and paid for it in the same manner as the other articles. He attempted to pass a draft upon the San Francisco Jewelry Company, but that organization fought shy of the paper. Atter Hammersmith & F.eld had ac- epted the draft from Lodtman their at- tention was called to an article in the Jewelers’ Circular, a trade journal pub- lished in New York. This article had a picture remarkably like their customer, and its caption was William Lodtman. he story was clipped from the New York Sun and described the operation of an ex- tensive swindler of unsuspecting jewe- dealers. The man named in the article had served a term in the New York peni- tentiary for passing worthless drafts drawn upon the New York Tribune, and since his reiease it was stated he had been engaging extensively in crooked work. Hammersmith & Field at ocnce con- cluded thev had been bunkoed and ap- pealed to the Chief of Police. Detectives Wren and Gibson were detallea on the case and they had no dfficulty in pcking up their man. He fitted the description of tbe Eastern crook so well tuat he was at once put under arrest. A search warrant was issued and a visit made to Lodtman’s rooms. Hiz wife was found there and when the officers told her her husband had bean arrested she com- | musical airector. When Mrs. Lodtman had been partially calmed she said she knew her husbana had been operating in theEast, but she had hoped that ere, in the far West, un- der new surroundings, he wouidgmend his way. A search of the room served to substan- tiate the story of his extensive opera- tions. Among his effects were found jewel cases bearing the firm name of houses in almost every section of the United States. The diamond ring, the field glasses and the revolver, were recoy- ered.
