12 e —————— THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, HER LINES OAST. OFF. Explanation of the Damage to the Ship | Commodore. William A. Boole has addressed the fol- Jowing letter 10 THE CALy for publication: | 8aN FrANCISCO, Cal., June 30, 1897. Morning Call, Market street, City—DEAR SIRS: We wish to state the facts regarding the fireon the ship Commodore which took place yester- day at 3:15 P: M., as the statements in the Ex- | aminer and Chronicle were not correct regard- | ing the captain. When the fire alarm sounded the captain was in our office and immediately ran to the ship Commodore and just arrived there in time to get on board before the gangplank | dropped off the wharf as the men had already cast off the stern fastenings. He then had a | line run over to the opposite wharf and hove the ship ever with the engine clear of the fire. While getting the hose from the steamer we -were surprised to find the ship arifting astern into the flames on account of the head lines being let go on the wharf and without any or- ders from the captain. While drifting past the wharf the anchor hooked on to the wharf and carried away the cathead-stopper and the anchor dropped to the bottom, the chain running out ss she @riftea clear of the wharf. Permit us_to say that had not the headline Been cast off the ship Commodore would have sustained but very little damage. Trusting you will give this your careful sttention, we remain, dear sirs, yours very truly, A. ROOLE, W. A. BooLE JR. J. DAVIDSON, Master 8hip Commodore. P. 3.—We would have you know that Messrs. J."D. Bpreckels & Bros.’ tugs did excellent Work in saving tue ship from total destruc- tion. W. A. B HOTEL ARRIVALS. PALACE HCTEL.
