10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 1897, MORE FIGHTING TALENT Dixon, Walcott and Everhardt Have Joined the Local Army of Pugs. Manager 0'Rourke Is Very Proud of His Stable—The Oalifornia Olub Contests. Tom O'Rourke, a well-known sporting boniface of New York, ana his stable of dark and white fighting men arrived Mon- day evening and repaired immediately on landing to Young Mitche!l’s sporting ren- dezvous, where liquid refreshmenis were partaken of. O'Rourke is a well-known figure in this City, having visited Frisco many times since prolessional boxing in clubrooms was inaugurated. He introduced the col- ored bantam, George Dixon, severai years ago to the members of the old California Ciub, and Dixon’s battle with Abe Willis, who was then the champion bsntam pugilist of Australia, is stil resh in the memory of many local sporiing men. Dixon made short work of Willis, put- ting tue Austraiian to sieep in the fourtn | round. Dixon is stil 1n charge of O'Rourke and is anong the string ot pu- gil:sts who arrived last evening Tue otners are Jack Everhardt and Joe Waicott, the coiored weiter-weight, of New York. Dixon is maiched 1o fizht| Dai Hawkins before the Empire Cinb in July at 128 pounds, weigh in ai 6 o'ciock on the evening of i nil. The little colored champion will be handicapped in height and reach b he local man, but then Dixon doesu’t botbher himseli about such small trifles, as he Las been fizhting all kmnas aod coors of men. He has served eight or nine years in the pugilistic army, snd what he does not know about the game woula easily enter the eye of a neeale. Heis lookiny well, with the ex- ception of a caulifiower ear, which token of esteem he received irom some Kastern opronent as a keepsake. Waicott stands apout 5 feet 2 inches, and is “as broad as he is lone.)’ He weighs about 160 pounds, but according to his own statement he can easily train down 10 148 or 150 pounds. Georze Green. his prospective opronent, stands b feet 83 inches; therefore the handicap in heigit is considerably in favor of Green. O'Rourke said he bad no_trouble of any kind with the Naticnal Club, and what- ever rumors to that effect were circulated had no foundation in fact. O'Rourke in- tbat be would be picased to see managers of the National Club, as he bad no doubt that maiters could be ar- renzed that would prove sausfactory to the club, himself and Pueilist Waleott. Everhardt is a promisine feliow who should putupagzood mill. He is maiched to fiznt “Spider” Kelly at 135 pounds, but iike his brothers in pugilism he must train_hard to get down to weight. Tue Empire Club wil, doubties, decide to- aay upon what evening the stars of tn pugilistic firmament will make their bow 10 the sporiing people of this City. O'Rourke hus also joined the heavy weizht division of good feeders, and now mpares favorably with Sir Billy Jordan and other well-conditioned svorts, who carry their ‘‘countersign’ in front. The California Athlstic Ciub will pive its montnly entertainment Friday eve- ning, anc as Jimmy Lawior, the 120-pound pugilist who made such s remarkably good showing against Anthony at a recent entertainment, will meet Chariey Con- way, a crack Eastern fighter, on this occa- sion’ speculation i« rife as to who will win the battle. Biz Miller is betting his own money that he will whip Buker in short order. — o+ o A DRESSMAKER'S BILL. Disputes, Arrests a the Jonas Family. There seems to be a serious difference of opinion between M. Jonas and Mrs. “Jane Doe’” Jones as to whether or not they are man and wife. The alleged husband, who is a prosperous and respected butcher at Seventh ana Mission streets, was con- fronted with a bill for dresses made by Mrs, Jane Lewis of 1025 Mission street upon the order of some lady representing berself as Mrs. Jonas. He denied that there was any such person, whereupon Mrs. Lewis caused 8 warrant to be issued from Judge Low's court cnarging the woman with obtaining goods by faise pre- tenses. Mrs. Jonas, as she calls berself, has been an inmate of the butcher’s home for many years, and has lived there with his chil- dren, the peopie of the neighbornood always acknowleaging her as Jonas’ sec- ond wife.
