Mexicans Circulate Strange Tales of Her Peculiar Power. Oae Old Man Who Was a Crippe for Years Made to Discard H s Crutches. TOMBSTONE. Amriz, June 28.—There passed ihrough this city yesterday a woman ofatoat 3) yeaze of aze of Oriental cast of !eatures, dressed in the garb re- sembling that in which Murillo clothed his pictures of the Madonna, who has given extraordinary evidencesof miraculousiy curing human i Several truthful per- sons in this vicinity testify to her wonder- 1ul powers and many remarkable stories of her cures have gained circulation here. The womaa speaks with a strange for- eign accent and vouchsales no further in- formation of hors:f than that she was born in the ‘ar East and is now making a religious pilgrimage of the world. She is very inteliizent and upon due provocation she relates historical occurrences of a cen- tury and further back with an accuracy of detail that fills one with wonder, if not with credulity. She claims to have been an eye-witnes< 10 most of these events and she speaks of the future with the abiding confidence of one gilte! with prophecy. One of the remarkable cures related of her concerns a Mexican who lives on the outskirts of tuis city. He bas been afflicted for nmany year< with a crippied knee, the result of an injury received in youth, and bas walked only with the use of crutches. The woman is sald to have simply passed her palm over the injured { limb, whereupon the Mexican experienced instant relief, a relaxing of the drawn muscles and the ability to stand erect without his crutches. In a short time he was able to walk and is now entirely healed. Many mcre instances of this strange woman’s power are cited and the Mexican inbabitants believe she is a saint. She steadily refuses all remuneration for her cures and wiil accept nothing bat food and a nizht’s lodging. No one seems to know whence woraan came, though ii is suppo<ed wandered up thiough Mex co. Superior Juige Cock Listens to Contend- ing Attorneys D.scussing Marin County Polstics. SAUSALITO, Car., June 28.—Superior | Judge Carroll Cook of San Francisco, sit- ting in the place of Judge Angeliotii, to- day heard the habeas corpus procesdings in the case of Mnrshal John E. Creed of Bausalito, sentenced by Recorder Joseph H. Pryor to pay $15) or serve 150 davs in jail for battery upon the person of Peter Ciaudianos, proprietor of the yacht house. The proceedings were of an interesting character, and Thomas P. B GOLD IN A STEER'S STOMACH | Reported D.scovery Which Bids Fair t: Enrich an Ar.zona Mex.- can. PHENIX, Ariz., June 28.—There has just arrivea in this ity a most remarka- bie Cochise Connty go!d discovery story | that is at least highly interesting. The name of the lucky discoverer is John Car- rillo. Heisa farmer in the southern part | of the county, very near the Mexican line, and it now appears that he has the most unique and valuable salt lick in tte world Hereto'ore Carrillo’s chiet industry has been that of raising cattle for the Eastern markets. Recently he set apart a numoer of steers to be fattened for his own domas- tic use, and a few days ago he killed one for the immediate consumption of himsel and neighbors, After cutting the meat and dividing 1t among his neighaors Ca:- rilo had the stomach prepared in the usual manner for tripe. Upon submitting this organ to the customary process of cleaning he found the entire lining of the stomach filled with some hard substance that was imbedded in the spongy folds wherein the gastric juices originate. A closer examination showed that this s stance was nothing less than free gold, and with careful saving and washing it is said that he procured nearly four ounces of the precious metal from that one stom- ach. Carrillo and his neighbors were aston- ished at the tind and at once set at work to discover a theory that would account for the presence of ine gold in the steer’s stomach. It was learned that the animal had been pasturing in the salt lick fields, a rather large saline deposit on the Car- rillo ranch. It has been known for many vears that almost the entire region abounded in gold placers, but the shining | particles are of that degree of fineness | to defy either the sluice or the rocker, and | the placers could never be profitabl | worked. A careful inspection of the sait lick disclosed good *‘color’’ under a sirong | glass, but of exceeding fineness. I. ap- pears now that the steer had licked up four ounces of free gold in less than two months, The salt in the earth had chlor- idized the metal and the lining of the | stomach had served in the manner of a coarse blanket at the bottom of a sluice in preserving the gold. | " Carrilio immediately slaughtered some sheep that bad been feeding in the same vasture, and With resuits equally as satis- factory, only ibat the amount of gold was somewhat smailer. Carrillo believes he has struck a rich thing and means to keep a bunca of cattle always fesdine in that pasture. s or even a little less—there will soon be started one of the greatest slauchter houses in the world on' the Mexican and Arizona line.
