Lieutenant Sears of Lyan, Mass., command- ing the naval militia at that place, who was here on & Visit last week, called on Captain Turner of the Naval Battalion, and the two had quite a talk on the subject of the naval branch of the National Guard. At the point where Lieutenant Sears is in command the men under him have a hulk which is| honsed over and fitted up with quarters for | the officers and the men. The quarters are oc- cupied the vear round.and the men who desire bunk on board in hammocks, just as the | meu do in the naval service, and they have a | mess on the vessel. As to encampments, the National Guard of Massachusetts, he said, is allowed $2 per man | during the time the men are in the camps doing service for the State. He gave a de- | tailed account of the manner in which the | affairs of the naval militia are conducted in | the old Bay State, and furnished a number of | suggestions which Captain Turner will con- sider after the cruise of the Comanche, during the eerly part of July, The trial of the Comanche a tew day for the purpose of testing the working capa- city of the after her long stay at anchor was a perfect success. The engines worked to riection and the vess: responded to the elm without the slightest difficulty. She steamed around the water front, went as far 8s Angel Island, and then went to Hunters Point and returned to her anchorage. The men are still taking lessons from the Naval Militiaman’s blue book and perfecting themselves for the cruise. The incdications are that there will be = full representation of the members of the three divisions that are to take part in the cruise. 1 Every member ol the first, seconr and | fourth divisions of the Naval militia, N. G. C., has been ordered to report on bosrd of the Comanche at 4 o’clock on the afternoon of the 3d of July to perform service for the following seven days, s this will be ‘‘the snnual er. campment” for the militin. The en will wear blue service uniform, without leggings. FRATERNAL DEPARTMENT. The Progress the Mission Chapter Has Made Since Its Ins itution a Few Months Since At its meeting last Saturday night Mission Chapter, Order of the Esstern Star, initiated seven candidates and nad four to ballot for. The ceremony of initiation was verformed in the presence of a large number of the mem- bers of the order, who were charmed with the manner in which the work was exemplified. In the few months that this chapter has been in existence it has demonstrated what energy on the partof the members and a de- sire to edvance can do. It has drawn to its memtership a large number or the best citi- zens of the Mission district; it hes increasea its numerical strength at.a wonderful rate, having initlations ai almost every meeting and iu the midst of the business of the chay ter and order the members have found time to give several entertainments, which by reason of their excellence have all been successful and have been the means of attracting many sirangers 1o them. The chapter has peen mecting in the old niall at the corner of Six- teenth and Valencia streets, but in & snort time will move into the new Musonic Hall, now in courss of construciion, and it will then have one of the most_commodious and pleasant homes in tne jurisdiction. The chapter will procure new regalia and furni- ture, and it hopes then to prosper as it has in the past and it will strive 10 become one of the strongest subordinaies in this district.
