Crocker Thanked for His Donation to the Indian Solar Eclipse Expedition Resolutions Adopted for the Disposi- tion of University Mcneys in the State Treasury. A special meeting of the Board of Regents was held yesterday aiternoon at the Mark Hopkins Institute ot Art, at which were present Regents Phelps, Crocker, Marye, Martin, Black, Koote, Houghton, Chase and Attorney Mnoon. The meeting was called to consider the means advisable to be emploved to secure a balance of ttie fund in the State treasury set aside tor the construction of college buildings. After receiving the adviee of Attorney Mhboon the following resoiutions were read and adopted without a dissent- ing vote: WHEREAS, The State Legislature has appro- priated the sum of $250,000 for the “‘erection of bui.dings and other departments of the University of California,” which said sum, or the unexpended balance thereof, is in the State treasury supject to the use of the said Board of Rgents, and Woereas contracts for the erection of said build- ings have been reguiarly let to conraci. ors as required by law in a sum ex- ceeding $125,000, the sum payable during the current (ihe forty-eighth) fiscal year, and the said buildings are now in process of erec- tion, and said Regents are bound and firmly ne:d on said contracts for the payment of said sum of $125,000 to said contraciors, and_du- plicate originels of suid contracts have been filed in the office of the State Contioller, to- gether with the authorized bills of material and specifications as required by law; and whereus said Regents have heratofore drawn and paid out of saia sum of $125,000 the sum 01 $49.723 42 in cash, and there remains $75,- 276 58. expended and paysble on said con- iracts for the currentfiscal year, be it Resolved, That the president of the Board of Regeuts, the Hon. James H. Budd, draw from the State treasury the said sum of $75,276 58 and pay the same over to Louls Sio s ESq., the treasurer of the University of California. Ine dorsea: The Hon, E. P. Colgan, Controller of the State of California, is requesied to draw Lis warrant for (he sum of $75,276 58 in favor of Louis Sloss Esq., treasurer of the University of California. And the Hon. Levi Rockliffe, Treasurer of the State of California, will upon presentation of said warrant pay over the sum of $75,276 58 to Louis Sloss Esq., treasurer oi the University of California, pursuant to the within order aud resolution of the Board of Regents of the University of California. The secretary then read a vote of thanks to be tendered Regent Crocker for his generous offer to contribute the expenses of the expedition to India to witness the total solar eclipse that will take place in 1898, Following is the text of the resolution: WHEREAS, C. F. Crocker has offered to bear the expense of an expedifion 10 observe the totel solar eclipse of January, 1898, in India, Resolved, That the Board of Regents accepts this generous offer, which makes such &n ex- pedition possibie, with sincere thanks. Resolted, That Professor Campbell is hereby autho:.zed w proceed, without loss of salary, to India on or about October 20, 1897, 10 es- tablish an eclipse station, returniug to Mount Hamilton on or before June 1, 1898. Resolved, That the cost _of such expedition shall be met from the gift of Regent Crocker and by duly authorized expenditures from the budget of the Lick Opservatory, aud that the safe return of all instruments ‘belonging 10 the observatory or loaned by others snall be fuily insured Resolved, That the director of the Lick Ob- scrvatory be instructed to prepare general plans and directions for the expedition, and that he is authorized to furnish such instra- ments and suppliesas can be sparcd and as are necessary for the expedition. After some discussion regrading the matter of printing 2500 copies of the *‘an- nouncement of courses,” whicu some three weeks ago had been awarded to the Pacific Press Publishinz Company of Oak- land and subsequently rescined, it was upon motion deciaed to bestow the work upon the State Piinter who had offered to do the work at actual cost, and the finance committee was instructed to araw and forward to State Printer Johnston the amount necessary to complete the work. The amount standing to the credit of the Whiting fund, which by reason of the inheritance tax had become slightly depletcd, was ordered restored to its orig- ipai amount by appropriating the differ- ence from the current income fund. After approving the action of the build- ing committee in accepting the assign- ment of Contractor Campbell to Contracior Carlzy for the construction of the agri- cultural building and authorizing the sale of 2081 acres of land in Kern County be- longing to the university for $2914, the board adjourned. PLANS RAPIDLY MATURING Endeavorers’ Executive Com- mittee Holds an Important Me-ting. Christian Chinese to Act as Guides for the Visiting Dele- gates The committee of 97, which has charge of the preparations of the convention in July, met Tuesday evening at its head- quarters in the Young Men’s Christian Association building. The meeting was well attended, and considerable business transacted. A sub-committee on puides for Chinatown reported that the Christian Chinese of the various missions had volunteered their services to escort visitors through Chinatown without ex- pense. It was decided to make this an- nouncement in some way so as to give Eastern visitors the opportunity of it ing that curious section of the city if they so desire. The matter of messenger service was 1e- ported upon by Mr. Rowe, the president of Goiden Gate Union. Afier a short dis- cussion it was resolved to invite ail juniors of twelve years of age and over, and all members of the Boys’' Brigade of the City 10 act asa volunteer messenger service during the convention. The uni- form will consist of cost and hat gimilar to those worn by the Boys’ Brigade. The reception committee held a meeting on Monday evening, at_which about tweuty membersof the staff were present. The reception committee expects to hold a final meeting to-morrow evening at the First Baptist Church, on Eddy street. The music for the eveuing will be in charge of Robert Cleland, chairman of the railroad section of the reception commit- tee. Rev. M. P. Boynton, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will in prayer, 2nd there will be addresses by Rolla V. Watt, chairman of the committes of 97, and Rev. J. B. Orr, pastor of Park Co gregational Church. Mr. Watt will speak upon ‘“‘A Heartv Reception, and How 10 Glive It,” and Mr. Orr will take for his subject, “The Spiritual Work of the Re- ception Committee.” Itis expected that about fifty dozen caps will be ready for ry, | distribution at this meeting, and mem- bers of the reception committee will pur- e their caps then. The committee on decorations revorted anumber of plans for the beautifying of the convention buildingsand of the streets of San Francisco. The contract for deco- rating the interior and the entrances of the Mechanics' Pavilion was awarded to A. F. Bchleicher. The contract for deco- rating the assembly ball to be erected in tae Mechanics' Pavilion, and also of adorning the entrance to tbe main pa- vilion, was awarded to F. E. Pratt. Re William Rader, chairman of the commit- tee on pulpit supply and special meetings, gave an outline of the evangelistic ser- vices to be conducted under the auspices of that committee. 5 A special committee has been appointed which is preparing an excellent form of service consisting of a selection of Scrip- tural readings, one or two hymns, etc., which will be printed and distributed in all the evancelistic services. These will be held everv evening during the conven- tion, and will be conducted by visiting ministers ana Christian workers. The meetings will be re-enforced by delega- tions from local and visiting societies to help along the music and to assist in every possible way.
