12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23, 1897. WHEN AND WHERE YOU CAN SHOOT Changes That Have Been Made in the Game Laws. D.er and Dove Must Not Be Hunted and Kiied Until July 15. Supervisors Have Shortened the Seascns to Suit Their R-spee- tive Localities. Sportsmen and anglers can now procure copies of the fish and game laws of this State (which have been compiled by Arthur G. Fletcher, clerk of the Board of Fish Commissioners) at the gunstores orat the office of the Fish Commission, room 78, Flood building. Beveral changes have been made in the opening and closing of the game seasons, snd sportsmen who do not think it worth a little time to study the new laws may find themselves in a ““mess of trouble” if caught shooting game birds or animals before the close season expires. Last vear the dove season opened on Juiy 1; but the birds must not be killed this year before July 15. The season for shooting mountain quail and grouse will commeace on September 15 and will end on February 15 of next year. Valley quail and wild duck can be shot from October 1 to Marca 10f next year. Deerhunters will do well to remember that the season for shooiing the big game wili no: open until July 15, ana full swing can be enjoyed until October 15. Auy person caughtt in possession of any female deer or spotted fawn at any season of the year, or any person who shall at | any time buy, sell, expose or offer for saie the hide or meat of any deer shall, upon conviction, be fined in a sum not less tnan $20 or be imprisoned in the couuty jail in the county in which the conviction shall be hvd not less than ten days or more than 150 days, or be puyished by both such fine and imprisonment. There are many county ordinances on | the records which are invaiid, as they conflict altogether or in part with the State iaws. All ordinances which con- flict in any way with the State law are repealed by virtue of the repealing clause in the various acts passed by the Legisla- ture of 1897. : By a decision of the Supreme Court vio- lations of sections 632, 634, 635 and 636 of the Penal Code are made triable in the Superior Court, and a Justice of the Peace or a Police Judge has no trial jurisdicion. The Supervisors of the different coun- ties can provide, by ordinances not in conflict with the general law, for the pro- tection of fisu und game, and may shorten the seas.n for the taking or killing of fish and game within the dates fixed by the general State laws, but shall not lengthen the same. San Franciseo Farmers’ Club Not Sat- isfiled Wi.h the Location. A special meeting of the San Francisco Farmers’ Club was beld Monday evening to consider the subject of the free market that is to be es'ablished on the water front in the to be hoped near futnre. At the last meeting & committee was aj- pointed to examine papers read at that pathering and to report on the same. The committee consisted of E. F. Adams, T. V. O’Brien, 1. J. Trumen and E. H. Denicke. Lastevening they presented the annexed repori: Your committee to whom was referred the papers relating to & free market read at the Just meeting o! the clubs have had the same under consideration, and wituout discussion at thie time respectfully recommend the adoption o1 the iollowing resolutivns which express the couclusions which your commit- iee has reached: iioied, By the San Francisco Farmers’ oTub: 1. In the judgment of this club the only water-front market which would benefit the people of the Stateat large would be such imarket as Lias aiweys been urged by the advo: cates of the measurc—namely, a market to or adjacent to which “all’” per'shcble products shi matter of fuct be delivered free of drayage, and in which mcthods of sale shall be controlled by public suthority. 2. We believe sucha market thus cosntrolled would be of very great benefit to Lhe pubiic. 3. We believe taat the pumber oi persons directly concerncd in this trade es procu- ers, consumers, buyers or sellers to be iar grenter than those concernea in any other single trade, and that this interest is therefore cnti- tled 0 first consideratiou in the use of th. waler front, next aiter the passeng:r traflic, nevertheless not to the extent of impeding tue use of the water front asa passageway fur all commodities. 4. From our general knowledge of the tacis and such expert advice as we have been able 10 ubtain, we beiieve that such & market as is proposed’ can be provided upon the water front, possibly with some rearrangement of the useé of the docks, but without serious in- jury to any interest. 5. While the proposed market has hitherto sections of the Btate mot served by river transportation—yet we are of the opinion not only that all producers are beneficially inter- ested, but consumers as_well, and not only these, but those engaged in trade and tne City authorities, and that the law having been passed, ali purties in interest should aid by any suggestion and information in aiding the State irarbor Commissioners to ths wisest ex- ercise of the wide discretion with which they are clothed. 5. To this end the secretary of this club is disected to place at the disposal of the Harbor Commissioners the papers relating to the mar- ket read at the last meeting o: the club. 7. We respectfully request the Harbor Com- missioners to immediately tske up the subject by instructing their engiieer to submit a defi- nite plan for erecting snch a market as tue law contemplates or in such other way as they mny deem best. 8 In the opinion of this club all interests involved should be formally represented be- fore the Commissiouers in counnect on with this matter, to the end that aiu iscts be brought out. 9. We find that there is in existence a com- miiiee created s year since by a fairly repre- sentative convention of producers; that this commitiee has beld but one meeting and has delegated its authority 1o one person, who de- clines longer to exercise it; we also find that High.and Grange, which began the active movement, and appareatly others, desire Lhis c.ub to lead in the creation of a new commit- tee formaily authorized to represent, as nearly as inay be, all proaucers. 0. That Lo this end the executive commit- tee of this club is directed 1o take, and in conjunction with other organized bodies, such measures as they may deem best for the formaiion of a committee baving formal cre- dentials as representing the largest possible number of producers, and pending the forma- tion of such committee that this committee be authorized to represent this club in regard to the free market. From the remarks made by & number of the gentiemen it was inferred that they do not regard the Pacific-street wharf as a suitable location for a free market. It was argued that it will take time to edu- cate the people as to their wants. If at first it is a failure the people must not be discouraged, but profit by the first mis- takes. The place selected is not adapted 10 the purposes of a free market, but it is a start. A wharf, similar in its purpose to the fisherman’'s wharf, should be buiit for a free market. In order to obtain more knowledge upon this subject the fol- lowing resolution was passed: Resolved, That in the meantime, as nn aid 1 suggesting rules and regulations for the gov- ernment of the free market in this City, the secretary of this club be instructed to cor- respona with the American Consuls and City Clerks of :he principal cities of the United States and abroad as to the system pursued in SITUATIONS WANTED-Continned.
