At ttie shot Pape spurted and i | The answer to the question is very sim- ple. During the past five years many crimes have been commitied in the north- ern partof town, the perpetrators of which have never been arrested, and this is be- cause of the start miscreants had on account of there being no officers near. The Judson robbers might probably have been headed off had the police de- pariment extended a!l over the northern territory, as it will do in the future. Many other crimes have also xone unpunished from the same cause. At the present time Berkeley is in much the same condition regarding police pro- tection as was the annexed territory. It bas a Marshal and possibly a deputy, but essoon as there is a crime committed word has to be sent to the Sheriff’s office, seven miles awuy, and by that_time the thief has probabiv crossed to San Fran- cisco. One well-organized police force along the bay shore would tend greatly to minimize crime, and in itself isa power- ful argument in favor of annexation. £1uart W. Bootn. WAKTED FOR FORGERY. The Police Had a Warrant for Board a Year Ago oa the Charge of Forgory. OAKLAND, Cav., Jnne 20.—The arrest of the individual giving the name of Richard I. Board yes:erday has more sig- nificance than at first supposed. For the past two weeks some one Las been send- ing boys into offices and stores to cash checks and tnus defraud the proprietor. The Brookiyn brewery was victimized in this manner less than a week ago. The innocent perpetrator of that of- fense was Harry Rogers, a bright lad liv- ing at 856 Adelive sireet. He wasac- costed, as was Henry Simmons yesterday, and asked to take a note to the brewery. He did as desired and the firm was out $25 by tbe iransaction. To-day Rogers was en before Board, but could not iden- y him as the man he did tae errand for. The police were surprised to learn this morning that Board was the man for whom they had been looking ior a year past. They hold a ant for his arrest sworn to by a German butcher who then had a chop at Seventh and Webster sireets, He secured $10 [rom him by the method he pursued yesierday and $25 from a sa- Jeon-keeper across the street. The latter would not swearto a complaint but the butcher did. Now he will nave to siand trial on both charges. The absence of the crew at the start was regretted, as it was considered the winning one, The Olym- pics and Ariels started in what proved to be the closest race of the day. Both crews held together to the stakeboat, where the Olympics gained a slight lead by their quick turn, but the Ariels spur ed and regained their ground. Tie Ariels’ longer sweep began to show itseii and they gradually forged ahead. The O ympies' cockswain kept steering into the Ariels’ wa'e~, ana when near the finish the Ariels were compellea to cross their rivals’ bows. The senior four-oared barge race proved the surprise of the day. ‘The Southend Midzets had s their op- ponents the Alamedas. From the pistol fire the crews held together and turned the stakebout at the same time. It was seen that the Mideets were holding back 50 a3 to make a c.ose finish, and they got it. Neur the line tne Alamedas becan to spurt, and, catching the Midgets off thesir guard, they crossed the line togetler. The judges decided the race a dead hear. After a little the crews s:arted again. The Midgets, profiting by their care- lessness, set a hot clip, and finithed a few lengths ahewd. Time, 12 minutes. The showiog made by the Alameda caused a great deal of favorabie comment.
