12 THE SA FRANCISCO CALL SATURDA 1897 Y, JUNE 19, BRODERICK WILL SHAVE ESTIMATES The Auditor Figuring on the Demands of De- partments. Some Considered Altogether Too High Under Present Conditions. The Strest, Schoo! and Health D¢ partm-nts Like'y to B: Ma'e- rially Reduced. Auditor Broderick spent all yesterday figuring over the estimates of appropria tions for the coming fiscal year sent in by the various municipal departments. It is the duty of the Auditor to consider the demands when they are handed in and present his views as to whether they should be increased or decreased to the Board of Supervisors when that body makes the annual division of the money raised by taxes and fees. It is hardly necessary to say that estimates are seldom increased. The demands that are giving Mr. Brod- erick the most thought are those of the School Department, Btreet Department and the Health Department with the in- stitutions that are under its control. These three, if allowed to tand as they were presented, would eat up nearly the entire amount of the City’s revenue, and it is certain that they will be materially rednced. The School Depsrtment asks for over $2,000,000 as against the$1,000,000 allowed by the Bupervisors last year exclusive of the amount raised to build the new Mission school. This the Auditor thinks is en- tirely too much. The items he principally objects to are those providing for the vuiiding of a large number of new school buildings. He thinks that in many iso- lated districts where the number of scholars is small the quarters at present occupied could be made to accommodate the schools with, perhaps, a few altera- tions until the finances of the City are in a better condition. It is probable that the estimate will be nearer one million than | two by the time it leaves his hands. In the matter of the Street Department estimate the Auditor will also make a cat, for he believes that the large amount of new work projected bv Superintendent Ambrose is in_excess of the acinai needs and that much of it can be carried over until tinances are in a more flourishing condition. Mr. Ambrose asks for neari a miliion—1n exact fi-ures $978,400—but i is probable that he wiil have to be content with nearer $500,000, as his department was conducted during the past twelve months on $507,000 and much accom- phisbed in the way o repairs and new work. The Health Department estimate of $108,720 15 certain of a maierial reauction. It provides for the salaries of twenty two new employes in addition to those that are aiready on the roll and the Audi- tor is firmty of the opinion that the de- partment already has as many men as it can make good use of. Amiong the items he objects to are: One inspector’s clerk at $900 a year, an assist- ant attorney at §2400 8 year, two addi- tional plumbing inspectors at $1200 a year each, three a-sistant market inspectors at $900 a year each, one assistant bath and | laundry inspector at $900, two additional | food aiid mulk inspectors at $300 each, and three assistants to the chemist of the boara at $900 each. The estimate of the amount needed for the maintenance of the Health Office, food inspection bureau and stations and labor- atories the amount asked, $25,000, is likely to be cut down Dr. Williamson’s estimate of the amount needed to condnet the City Hospital ($113,000) will some exien also be cut 1o Oiner esiimates that will probably be reduced are those of the Fire Depurtment $750,000, the new fire-alarm telegraph $51,000 and the County Clerk $138,000. Ic is impossible to say until the Aud- itor's work is finisied what the total amount of the cut will be, but it is safe to +ay that when Le submite his report to the Bupervisors the aggregate will be very little if any more than it was last year. 4 JOLLY TROLLEY PARTY Electric Railway Band Treats Its Friends to a Long Ride and Mus:c A Decorated and Iilum'nated Train Altracted a Great Deal of Atten- ticn Wherever It Went. The members of the Electric Railway band of the Market-street Railway system gave & novel entertainment to i:s frends | Thursday night in the shape of a “‘troliey party.” This consisted of a ride on a train made up of a double truck electric caranda trailer. The former was dec- orated with American flags and a row of electric lights on the upper edge of the roof on each, while under the hoods over the platforn hung a number of colored lanterns. The trailer was also decorated with flags and lanterns, and on each side was a garland of red, white and biue, which inclosed the name of the band. In the trailer were the members of the band, as follows: W. H. Ramsey (leader) J. A. Kennedy, Krank Gitchell, George W. 'D. Pidwell, L. Small, Hollister, C. F. Stone, R. E. A. Gitchell, L. M. M. McDonaid, Miss Laura Wiadover, Thomas F. Wise, Josepn A. Watts, Sergeant Campbell. The train left the carhouse amidst the cheers of a large crowd that had as- sembled to watch the uepariure, and as 1t moved away the band struck up a popu- lar air. The train moved along the fol- alto considered excessive and | and County | 8. Ander- | B. Miller, Mrs.8.J. | lowing route: Mission street to Third, Kearny to Jackson, returning along Kearny to Third, then across Long Bridue and along Keatucky street to Sixteenth avenue, then back 1o Mission and out to Ingieside, where & siop of twenty min- utes was made, when the lacies provided sandwiches, cakes and lemonade. The pariy then returned to the train and was iaken back to Mission and Twenty-sixth streets, when a turn was made down to the last-named street and there was a run 10 the powerhouse on Bryant street, after which the train was run to Second and Market streets and then out Folsom and back to the carhonse. The novel procession attracied a great deal of attention along the streets, and when out in the outlying districts the peo- ple ran out of their houses and cneered the party as it passed by. All along the line the band, which was organized a few months aco, diccoursed popular music. The trip was a very pleasant one and was much enjoyed b = A Dam in Controversy.
