WhaHs: srehitecs | DANCING ON WHEELS Bicycles Introduced at a Government Ball in Melbourne. It has been reserved for Ausiralia to in- troduce the bicycle into the bullroom, says an exchange. England has had her bicycle gymkhanas, Princess Letitia Bona- purte has given al fresco bicycle parties at her vilia, near Turin, but Lord and Lady Brassey are the first to furnish their ball- room with a bicycle track ana banked ends. The occasion was their first ball of the season at & Government house in Mel- bourne, and a musical ride on bicycles was an important part of the programme. It was an adaptation of the musical rides of the Housebold Brigade or the Scots Grays, and those who participated spent several days practicing the evolu- | tions, sometimes for three hours at a suetch, Though the highly polished | floors had been heavily dusted witn French chalk, several riders had slight mishaps from side-slipping, but these in- terfered little with the success of the affair. The tigures executed were a blend of cavalry ride and the quadrille, as indi- | cated by tue commands used in practic- ing, such as “Ladies, right turn; gentie- | men, left turn—chain— ladies’ to the | center,” and so on. The ladies wore cvcling costumes of pate | blouses, with dark biue ties and dark blue | skirts 1 | THE CALL CALENDAR. June, 1897.
