} 8 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, MONDAY, JUNE 14, 1897 SAMPLE SERMONS FROM CITY PULPITS Topics Religious and Secu- lar Handled in Church. “Trinity” Explained by Rev. Mr. Wilson of St. Peter’s Episcopal. Alcohol Traffic i» Human Souls the Them- of Dr. Girdn-r—Other Interesting Subj-cts. OLLOWING are samples of some of yest-rday’s sermons in some of the churches, They are synopses of the | best and most characteristic which have come to hand. Doctrinz of the Trinity Explained. Rev. Marden D. Wilson at Si. Peter's Episcopal Church spoke on the *“‘Doctrine of the Trinily” yesterday morning, sub- stantially as follows: more theological ages than this in which welive the doctrine of the Trinity of tlie keenest intellectual in- st. In he days of Bishop Butler, in the daysof Jonathan Edwards fierce and intense was the discussion that raged around this and other docirines of the Christian revelation. Men hung upon the lips of theologians, watch- ing for some word which would make more clear the mysteries cf eal the truth. Not that they ally that which was new. but 1ld reach the very essence of vital ¥s the multitudes seem again to have taken up the old cry of the Atheniaus of the days of St. Panl and 10 be clamoring f something which is simply “new.” The new preacher, the new doctrine, the zew prophet, whether he hails from India to teach the oc- cuit revelation of Buddha or from Boston to teach the wild yagaries of what is falsely cailed Chrlstian science, ail have tneir ardent lis- teners and oftentimes their esger and de- wers. - m es we ask why is this? Whnat does it mean? Is the whole worid becoming un settied? Have these old teachings lost their force and value? Are men generaly losing the religion of the former ages? The present writer is not & pessimist. A g00d many things are being uuseitled, but the old truths remain. Men sre not losing their old-time religious instinct. Man is & religious being. He cannot avoid the r 5 gs within him. In a general way we ellcve man is more religious in tnis genera- tion than ever belore. The very restlessness which induces som arent spirit of braggadocio to tur; ches 18 an evidence of & deep religious sentiment. Thi very appeal to Buddha, which is heving a cer- tain vogue in Sen Francisco to-day, is an ev dence of the sxme decp ana widesp: ligious thought We have lived through an criticism and the t ge of destrzctive is turping in that mat ter. The very motable utterances of | Professor Haruack, the pride of the Univer. | sity of Beriin and the very prince of sciolarly critics, is evidence that destructive criticism | has had its day. He declares that the litera- | ture of the Cn an church, from thee: writings of the New Testament canon to time of Iren mus, is proved by critical inve ation to be in the main points and *'in most of | its details, from the point of view of literar: history, veracious and trustworthy.” *Th essential accuracy of tradition, wiith but few important exceptions,” has been eritically d. establi 1f this be true, and criticism has come back to tradition for its authority, and | the whole Christian contention as to litera- | ture has been fully estsblished through the agency of those who have sought to destro; i surely we have ground to believe that | when these fads and fashions of the day have | begun to lose their charm, then men and women will in greater numbers come back to the old church old truths, and find | thers the only n for their storm- | tossed and wen Rest an Essential | To Proper Labor. Rev. H. F. Shepard, at Olivet Congrega- tional Church, spoke at yesterday morn- ing’s services on the tex Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy lagen, and I will give you rest.—Matt. 11:28. He said in substance iE people of our country are often eriti- cized severely for undue sbsorption in business to the exclusion of important duties of & higher nature and rich pleas- ures which they should enjoy. This criticism much justice, and no vacation of & weeks Ccan répair the lose of constant wor- rying and hurrying during the rest of the yesr. Every day should be relieved by frequent res- e from toil and car: Eeveral classes of men cannot rest. Hard work precedes all best rest, and thus the idier cannot rest. Dissipation is not rest, and it unfits its victim for it. Overwork is ome of Test’s worst enemies. Rest is modified by the age of the rest-seeker. 1t is wholly unjust to expect youth and mid- dic life and old_age to conform to identical Tules of rest. Proprieties of time and piace and & burning desire .0 make the most ol life for God and truth should control all diversion. Sunday is an invaluable rest day. All other days should hrve abundant rest for body and ming, and Sunday sbould comprehend sil this and J1it the soul above it to hizher spir ual Joy. If the week is heavy with ciuel over- work, Sunday is powerless to relieve the strain of this abuse. No earnestness and eloquence of preaching and no disposition of reverent listening can give the Lord’s day its intended measure of joy and rest if the week has been deadened with excessive toil. Our State needs great reiorm in Sunday ob- servance. Some powerful sources of a better Sunday that shall be filled with rest and wor- ship and brinz new strength for the week are decressed greed of employing capital, personal sobriety ana_economy of employed labor and increased practical interest of our churches in problems of labor and social reform. There is little use in preaching to men who are too tired to listen. I is equaliy futile to preach theology to men who are out of work and absorbed in un- successtul search for bread for suffering wives and hungry children = Rev. Dr. Gardner on Tratfic in Men. Rev. Dr. Gardner preached yesterday at the West Side Christian Church on ficin Men.”” The text was Isaiah li Ye have sold yourseives for naught; ye shall be redeemed without money. {E traffic in men began very early in the history of the race, and has continued 10 the present time. One of the darkest blots on the fair face of our republic is the institution of Alri- can slavery, which was protecied by our laws for more than three-quarters of a century. To destroy the traffic in numan beings the United tes suffered the 10ss of more than eignt bil- lions of properiy and treasure, and s'x nun- dred and sixieen thousand men, who were killed or died from disease in the armies of the North and the South. One of the hings ac. complished by his dieadiu] Civil War was the liberating of 4,000.000 siaves, but all the slaves were ot fiberated. A mich worse form of traffic in men than that carried 0n in the South before the war is now cursing our coun- ry. Eighty thousand boys and girls are being bariered awey each yesr, of whom 15,000,000 are now in bondege. The msster who rules Over these uniortunsie siaves is far more cruel ihap the siave-drivers of the South or the terk-makers of Egypt. The black men who was legally bougat and sold in the United States forty years ago boasted that, though his body might be bound with chains, his Spirit was free. The slave to strong drink finds body, soul and spirit in the cidiches of & Lyrant whom he is expecied toserve eternally. Let the Grand Army of the Republic and the greatarmy of ‘he Christ unite in & war that shali free our couniry from the diabolical tyranny of king slcohol. Much more numerous than those who have religion, which would | | be sent | medals and b #lave could purchase his freedom for a 1ew] | thousand doliars, but the soui that finds itself | a slave 10 sin cannot be redeemed with mone slood is the only legal tender. “Without the | shedding of blood there is no remission.” Tie highest price ever paid for anything has beei given 1o redeem a race that had “sold | itselffor naught.” The benefits of redemption | ¢an be enjoved by those oniy who are loyal in | hesrt and life to the Christ who has redeemed us without money. ' LA I, Daniel’s Lions Are Our Selfish Desires. Rev. J. 8. David, pastor of the Sweaen- | borg Mission Society, lectured on *An | | | i Honest Statesman in a Den of Lions” a t Washington Hall, in Red Men’s building last eveming. He said 1n substance: ANTEL was an Israelite; and the fact | that while captive in Babylon he | was exalted to the most exalted posi- tion, next to the king, in a foreign | nation so excitéd the jea'ousy of his teiiow-officers of the realm that they put their heads together and develojed a well laid scheme for his destruciion. They were illus- trations of that horrible seifishness which has manifested itself in sil historic ages, which exalts personal consideration above the love and service of the people. The story of Danie; | in the den of lions all night unhur: contains an important lesson for people of all subse- | quent ages. | The lions are the selfish desires of our lower | nature which is temporarily captive in the reaim of mat Daniel controiled the Iions Dy that wouderful psychic and spiritual power which, when properly undersiood, subordi- 1ates ‘the whole auimal world to man: and nhus he symbolizes every pure and faithful 103, who controls the fierce animals of his sower nature that they cannot hurt him. They may severely tempt him; they may cast m into the s;udow of despair; but the faith- 1soul who realizes the divine presence wiil emerge {rom tneir sphere in the morningol & new state sironger than ever, while they will ouly destroy themseives in their cffort to de- stroy him. Final and eternal victory is the goal of every fait Judge Not Lest Ye Be Judged. Rev. Father Maynadier of Washington, D. C., preached at St. Mary’s last evening. His text was, “Judge not and you will not be judged.” DO not always stop to consider what | we mean by judgment. We have th judgment pronounced by those given authority by law to pass sentence, and | | we have the judgment of our own private >pinions. In both judgments things are to be considered for ana against. We are warned in this Gospel about one case to which we are all too prone. We are warned not to pass judgment upon our brothers. We are t0ld by "Almigity God not to judge our brother. Shouid we overlook a fauit, it fault there be, we may thereby have our own fau overlooked ana condoned. Do we not need to | have our faults overlooked ? We cannot fu tives of our bro son we have no ge him. God alone can penetrate our inmost heart. God alone can see without prejudice the motives of our actions | PACIFI0 COAST LEGHORN OLUB. Growth of the Organ zation Fxciting Enthusiasm—Plans in View. An enthusastic informal meeting of the Pacific Coast Leghorn Club was held Saturday evening at the club’s headquar- ters, room 312, Emporium building. The members present were crea:ly pieased at the remarkable growth of the club. It 1s fully expected that before the mnext monthiy meeting fully 100 mem bers will be on the roll.
