2 ‘| THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, FRIDAY, JUNE 11, 1897. . et L e e FOR AND AGAINST THE MISSION 200 Representative Citizens Ar- gue Before the Street Committee. Colonel 0O’'Byrne Characterizes Public Squares as Public Nuisances. r. the Anierson Says They Are Great Necessity of the Poor. The Street Committee of the Boara of ervisors yesterday entertsined a large delegation of representative citizens rep- resenting the Mission Improvement Club. Tley came to plead the cause of the Mis- sion parks—some for the ‘‘zoo,” which contemplates a larger park, aud some for the small park and very much against the “z00.” There were some thirty persons present who waited patiently in the outer room for over an hour for their opportunity to be heard. When finally the sergeant-at- arms threw open the door and called tor the *““Mission Zoo” they all filed ia. William M. Bunker began the pleadings in behalf of the purchase of a large tract of iand at some point in the big stretches toward the sea beyond the Mission proper. He said he had no special site to desig- nate, but believed that many eligible bids would be offered when called for, and de- clared thatnow when lana was so cheap opportunities would be offered that might not return. He said the establishment o1 8 zoological garden in San Francisco could not be urged as a luxury buta neces He said that the building of the Santa Fe into Los Angsies had diverted some of the trade that had beiore that time belonged to San Francisco in the south. The buud- ing of the Northern Pacific and Oregon Short Line into Portland, Tacoma and Seattle had diverted some of the trade from this City on the north. San Fran- cisco, he said, must do something to re- trieve itself. He suggested thatthe estab- lishment of such a zoological garden as is contemplated would go far toward that | end in farnishing an attraction to visitors | from all parts of the country. Colonel 0'Byrne made an eloquent plea for the zoo and the big park. He said that public squares were little less than so many public nuisances, being chicfly used as trysting-places for the lewd and | dangerous classes; menaces ‘o the young; they were especially dangerous when near schools where children were liable to their baneful influences. T. F. Hagerty and Dr. Jerome Anderson made the speeches of the afternoon in be- haif of the small park. Mr. Hagerty sisted that the small park was really the people’s park, affording resting” and brea:hing places where they were really needed. He denied the truth of Colonel O'Byrne’s argument as to the menace to good morals in the small park. He said that all the cities of the world supported bim in this statement. The gores formed by the intersection of streets, which were illy adapted for buildings, should be | turned into beautiful breathing and rest- ing spots, as in done in so many cities. | | | The Zoological collection could be placed in Golden Gate Park, wi ere it belonged. The taxing of the people for the purchase of a larger park at this time he said would | be a great outrace. Dr. Anderson spoke to the subject as a | physician. He said that the small park, | letting the fresh air and sunlight into the dark places of the City, was a necessity to | ¢ *1 practice and ‘ive among the | the poor. poor and I know their needs, doctor. “They cannot go to Golden Gate | Park. It costs them what they have not | —time and money. A spot where they | can wheel the baby-carriage into and rest | and get the sunlicht and sir is what they want as a mnecessity to their health. I would like 10 see breaches cut into the districts along Jessie and Tehama streets for this purpose. That is hardly possible 10 accomplish, but here we have a chance in the proposed purchase of the two blocks composing the old Jewish grave- yard.” Addresses were made by George D. Shadbourne, George L. Center and others. The committee took the matter under consideration. MISS DREYFUSS' SOHOOL. A Splendid Evtertainment to Be Given | This Evening. The pupils of Miss M. F. Walter Ixeda, a Japanese, 20 years of age, committed suicide early yesterday morning at 12 Waverly place, because of a quarrel he had with a woman known as Molly Morgan. He used a revolver, stolen from his em- ployer, Dr. 8. Trask, of 321 Geary street, and sent & bullet into his heart. When the police and Coroner were notified the belief was that the Jap had been mur- dered in a drunken brawl, but investiga- tion clearly showed that it was a case of suicide. O the preceding evening Ikeda sent a note to the woman telling her to get her friend Kittle Montgomery and meet him and Henry, another Japanese, and go on a spree with them. The quartet drank all night ana finally reached 12 Waverly place, where they went to sleep. None of the party knows when Ikeda arose and went to another room, where he ended his life. He left a letter addressed to Molli in which he askeq ber to forgive him. | situations. was well connected in Japan, but that he was inclined to be sport: 1n fact, he stole $15 as well as the doctor’s revolver. ————pe—— HOTEL ARRIVALS.
