June 7.—The town of Keswick, eight miles north of Redding, i3 one of tlie most prosperous mining camns in Northern California, and is not often heard of on the outside. The Iron Mountain Copper Company employs 340 men at its mine, ten miles irom Keswick, and probably twice as many more in and abour its three smelters at Keswick. A year ago there was one house in the town proper, where to-day there are at least fifty housss, eight saloons, three ho- tels and several families living in tents-or anything that will sfford shelter. A plant for a weekly newspaper, to be calied the Mountain Miner, is on tne ground, and tue publication will soon make its appear- ance. A sciool district has been organ- ized for $8000 for a schoo!bouse. One California’s catse there are no suitable accommoda- tions, but the company has commenced the construction of forty-five new col- tages, which it will rent to its employes. Private parties will build as many miore nouses during the summer if the lumber holds out. The floating population is large. There is & constant stream in and out of men packing their blankets. The smelter smoke is more than some can siand long, and the outward-bound string of men is composed of those whoare “smoked out.”’ The inward-bound string is made up of those seeking employment. Locslly the town is invariably called Keswick, but that is really the name of the railroad station and postoffice two miles distant. The founders of the town site christened it South Park. In estab- { lishing the school district the name Compion was given, and when it came to | naming the postoffice the department at | Washingt have none of these names. Finally the people petitioned to have the postoffice called Taylor, in honor of the late Clay W. Taylor, and the depariment at Wash- ington approved of the cnoice. e DROWNED NKEAR FOLSOM. William Callahan of Folsom Ferishes in Sight of His Wite. Rancher Callaban, & prominent and wealthy young farmer and orcbardist of Piacer County, | whose residence is three miles from Loomis, was drowned near Folsom 1his afternoon whiie fishing in the American River. A num ber of men went to the scene from Folsom and made an effort 1o recover the body, but in vain. Callaban was about 35 years of age and a nephew of D. E. Cal- lahan, who formerly conducted the Goid- en Eagle Hotel in this city. PERJURY IN A SAN JOSE TRIAL Prosecuting Witness Admits That He Swore Falsely and Is Committed 1o Prison. At the rial this morning 1t was proved by Clare and William Brimson, a brother jof the com- plainant, that the latter bad given the watch to Clare to pawn, and Brimson bhad full knowledge of the fact that the waten was disposed of to Lowenstein for $2 50. Of this money Clare got complainant §2. Brimson admitted on the stand to-day he facts as proved by his prother ana Clare, and that his oath in making the petty larceny complaint was talse. He claimed it was done to recover the watch without paying back the money whica was realized upon it. On this siartling statement the defend- ant was discharged, and Brimson was or- dered into custody while the District At- torney took steps to prepare a perjury complaint against him. Officials Induce Owners of Buildings Not to Lease Quarters. Citizens of the Town Determined to Prevent the Threatened Invasion. SAUSALITO, Car., June 7.--Law and order triumphed in Sausalito to-day. The iaro games were ready, new outfits arrived on the morning boats, but not a card was dealt, not a wheel of fortune revolved, and the colored tables failed 10 dazzle the eyes of the betting public. Prosecuting Attorney Adolph Syiva this morning visited one of the faro resorts in El Monte Hotel, on Water street, and in- formed the men in charge that the law would be enforced at the first attempt to open a resort where wheels of fortune or any other gambling devices were to be operated. The gamblers were disposed to dely the law, but the proprietors of the bouse wherein the games were to be operated, were fearful of the consequences. J.E. Slinkey rented apartments in his | hotel to Argyli & Harvey for $100. This money was paid back this morning, the witnessing the transaction. : The poolroom proprietors—Harrison & Co., and Abrabam & Co.—are as much | in the downing of the faro | | resorts as are tne officers and the peogle, | SACRAMENTO,CaL., June 7.—William | | law. for if the gambling dens open, Sausalito | people will not only run them out, bu:| t the poolrooms as well. This morning an early boat brought a faro outfit to Sausaiito. No attempt was made to hide it, and within ten minutes «very person in town knew of the arrival. ‘Tne officers were on deck and the pro- prietors were cautioned against opening in Sausalito. Attorney Sylva told the gambiers that if the police force in ausa- lito was not sufficient to_handle them he would call upon San Rafael and otker towns to send their aeputies to uphold the On the streets of Sausalito to-day could ba seen more gamblers than have invaded the town for many a day. Every | one was looking forward to excitement, | 50 cents and the | | man Fowier of New Jersey for § and scattered about in the town w re | | officers from Mill Valley, Larkspur and other towns in the county. The larze building to be opened by Hughes & Co. of St. Louis is almost com- pleted. 1t is said ibat as soon as this is | opened for business more trouble will be in store. Already two poolrooms are in active oparation, and two, so say the peo- vle, are enough. The report that Huxkes & Co. intend fo run other gambling games cannot be substantiated, bui it is gen- eraily believed to be true. STOCKTON, Cav., June 7.—Alfred Stiil- man, secretary of the executive committee of the Board of kire Underwriters of the Pacific at San Francisco, has given notice io the agents in Stockton that unless the “agents’ agreement’’ is signed on or before the 10th asy of June their authority as agents of the company is suspended, and they bave no authority to scoept new business, renew existingz business or make any indortement on any policy. Their autnority is restricted exclusively to the closing of accounts on business written priorto the 10th day of June. and no pol- icy can be written taking effect on or alter the 10th day of June. The insurance combine has selected Stockton as the place to begin its battle against a league of msurance men which exists in various cities of California, nota. bly Stockton, Sacramento and San Jose. The league was organized to resist what insurance agents consider unjust action on the part of the companies. A meeting of the btockton agents was held this ernoon, but they do not know just what action to take. .y ARIZONA ONYX MINES, Derelopment Work to Be Commenced at Once at the Big Bug. This is the proper.y recently purchased by Congress- 50.000, The presence of Uunderhill and his ex- perts means the immediate development of one of the richest cnyx mines in the wor!d, and this development is undoubt- edly due to the fact that the new tariff law will place a heavy tax on Mexican onyx.
