2 1 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 1897. WINE-MAKERS ENTER PROTEST A Demand That the Dingley Tariff on Wines Shall Stand. Alarm Excited by the Proposed Senate Finance Committee Cut. Cur Representatives Appealed To by Wine-Growers in Mass-Meet- ing Assembled. An exceedingly important meeting, in- asmuch as it concerns the vast wine inter- ests of this State, was held in Chamber of Commerce Hall yesterday by the Califor- nia Wine Association. Its purpose was to protest against the action of Congress in trying to depress the wine interest of Cali- fornia by changing the Dingley bill rates on all foreign wire. Frederick Jacobi, who has lately repre- sented the association in the East and has held several conferences with California’s representatives there, presented a lengthy report of what he had accomplished, He stated that he had apveared before the House Committee, and had been so fortunate as to have the all-around duty of 60cents together with tbe 10-cent re- ciprocity clause restored. This has been adophed by the House, but there seems to be a disposition on the part of the Senate to defeat the wisbes of the association. He believed that the association should Dot beg for anything, but should make a peremptory demand and_‘‘stay with it. The whisky men in the East, he asserted, are wide awake and working hard to effect their own ends; and now the time bhad come when they should be called traitors, John 1. Swett presided in the absence of Judge Stanley. Mrs. Frona Wait acted as secretary. After Mr. Jacobi’s report had been read the following resolution was offered by Mr. Bundschu: Resolved, That in the name of an American indusiry we enter an emphatic protest against the radical modification of tariff rates on for- eign wines, as reported by the Senate commit- tee against the Dingley bill. We aeplore the proposition of an inequjiable discrimination in favor of the foreign product. While the Dingley mersure (H. R. 379) bears the proud title, “A bill 10 vide revenueand Lo ei- courage the industries of the United States,” the Senate amendment upholds :he present tchedule 1n wines, 5o disastrous to the Amerl- can wine industry. Our indusiry cellar investments of over $50,000,000, is su fering and struggiing under uudue forelen competition; we appeal 10 Congress 1o grant us relief. Wec ently look forward to our sdministration for and not for para yzing messures to r jeopardize our large invesiments. our noble industry and its future development. We demand conside: fon for our interests nd trust we may not be forsaken. s and wine-makers of y: M Estee, H. W. Crab Gust Niebaum, J nley, Ewer & Atkin son, F. Morgan, Arpad Haraszthy, A. Sbarboro, Frederick Jacobi. ‘lhe committee was also given full power to act with reference to correspondence and telegrams. As M. M. Estee has writien to Senator White in regard to this matter, and re- ceived a very satisfactory response, it was resolved 1o correspond both by telegram and letter with Senators Perkins and White and urge them to strong and per- sistent action. After a short deliberation on the part of the commilttee, it was decided to send the foilowing telegram 1o the California dele- gation: The vineyardists and wine-makers of Califor- nia, this day in mass-meeting assembled, em- phatically protest sgainst auy reduction of the Dingley tariff schedule on wines, and hereby demand {rom their representatives in Congress that their interests shall not be sac- rificed 1o those of the loreign nroduc: JOHN SWEIT, C. SAYS HE REFUSED TO PAY Caterer Riego Sues General Dickinson for the Cost of a Dinner Party. Raymond Riego, a caterer, has sued to recover §13765 from General Dickinson and Herbert E. Law. The caterer alleges that acting under a verbal contract with the general and Dr. Law he gave a d nner party. held under the auspices of the Pa- cific Yacht Club, on the 15th of month. The dinner was given for the purpose of reorganizing the ciub, which, Riego savs, was in a critical condition, because Dickinson had used it to serve bis political interests, Riego avers that by the agreement he was to receive $1 a head for irom fifty 1o 100 persons. After incurring the expense and giving the dinner satisfactorily he went to Dickinson for his pay, but a cording to the caterer’s zccount the gen- eral refused to pay, denied he had made the contract and teld him to go to the steward of the club if he wantea any- airman. thing. When Riego threatened to sue he | declares that the general told him that he | wasa lawyer and knew how to manage lawsuits, and that the caterer would not get a cent from bim. A complaintin the case has been filed by Riego’s sttorneys, Barreit and O'Gara. The case wiil probably come up for trial next week. General Dickinson when seen yesterday expressed his annovance at the matter being brought up. *‘I made no contract with Riego,” he said. “That is left en- tirely 10 the steward of the club. We guarantee him a certain numbsr of per- sons at dinner and he goes ahead and pre- pares the dinner. If he makes anything outof it be keeps it in addition to the sal- ary we pay him. The only dealings I had with Riepo was when he came up to my office with Mr. Sturgies, the steward, to discuss the matter. *Later, when he called to demand his money, I told him to go tothe steward, The steward told him he was willing to pay him and had the money to pay him with, but Riego refused to do so, and hence the suit.”” e Starr King Council. On Decoration dey Councilor Edward W. Close, accompanied by B. 0. Cameron, devoted the day to decorating the graves of tneir de- ceased brothers. The following are the de- ceased brothers of Starr King Council: C. E. Birch, W. F. Berry, E. A. Johason, W. M. Par- ker, George W. Thoma The graves presented & most impressive esenting vinevard and | last | sight, decked with garlands of flowers and evergreens, and floating sbove the graves was a bezutiful American flag with white satin streamer attached, bearing the name and num- ber of the council. The grave of Colonel E.D. Baker was also profusely decoraied by E.W. Close and B, 0. Cameron with flowers and American flags. This is the first council of the Junior Order United American Mechanics 1n the State to observe these memorial rites to commemorate the memory of the deceased membvers, and again places on the pages of Starr King Coun- cil's history another aamirable precedent worthy of ihe attention of a:l patriotic organ- izations.
