Their voice | will float out apon an atmosphere redolent with the fragrant breath of spring. From a thousaud conservatories, from countless flower plots, from the sunny slopes of neighboring hills and from the shady re- ces ses where grow the delicate ferns and climbing vines Flora has been invoked to give of her bouniy to the sacrea thanks- giving of Easter-tide. No humble chapel is too poor to have its altar made beautiiul with lilies to-day, and, indeed, in plenitude of blossoms which here abound the more pretentions congregations can outrival their poorer brethren materially | out in opportunities for display. In almost every edifice in the City there volunteer committees composed mainly of ladies who were working ener- getically and cheerfully in beautifyi their respective places of worship. The pulpits, altars and chanc the centers of observation, a monopoly of the de attention, and asa result almost every minister in the Uity will to-day preach from a bower of beauty. The weather forecaster, who seems 10 have a penchant for saying dis- secured agreeable things, has been unkind enough | to threaten a showery day, but showers or no showers within the various churches it will be spring in all its delicate, witching | beauty. One of the most striking features of the decorations at the Central Method ist Epis- copal Church was a large cross of calla | 1ilies, which occupied a position on the pulpit. From the intersection at the pin- nacle of the pipe-organ of two festoons of white a dove was suspended. It is"an claborate affair composed of pink begonias, white lilacs and delicate roses. In the chancel the lines of perma- nent adornment are féliowed by cuviumns of gillyflowers, and the same plan is | partially pursued in the body of the hurch.” At the rear is a great rustic cross | earing a wreath ofivy. Plans are rapidly maturing for the es- tablishment of two new electric light and power companies in this City to compete with the recently organized Consolidated Gas and E ectric Light Company, which comprises the Edison Light and Power Company anda the San Francisco Gaslight Company. A knowledge of this situation has evi- dently affected the market value of the shares of tue consolidated company, for its stock has shown a gradual decline for the past few day Oneof the intending competitors for the light and power patronage of the com- munity was incorporated on Wednesday | under the title of the Bay City Electric Light and Power Company. Iis capital stock is placed st $750,000, and the incor- | porators are Louis de Rome, Henry G. Knowles, G. W. West, ¥red Mueller and William 'F. Gibson. F. Harris, a wealthy grocer, is credited with be'ng be- hind the scheme, and others of meuns are also reported to be ready to provide finan- cial backing for it. John D. Spreckels is prominently men- tioned in connection with similar corpora- tion. He has been taking great interest in the local light supply_situation, as the Spreckels properties, including the Ewma Sprecke/s and Spreckels’ Market buildings are large consumers of elec- tricity, and a atill larger customer for this commodity will be the hnge edifice, which 18 10 be the home of THE CALL. now near- | | ine completion on the scuthwest corner of Market and Third strests. The Lfit!e Fellows Made Them- selves at Home in the Ladies’ Bonnets. How Th:y Reached a Vessel Eighteen Miles Off Shore in a Fog Is a Mystery. Captain Wallace, the crew and passen- gers of the steamer Walla Walla had s strange cxperience off the Mendocino coast last Friday night. The vessel was from sixteen to eighteen miles off shore, a mild southwesterly breeze was blowing and the fog was descending rapidly and ST IGNATIVS cruRan EI!" “m\\; oes e VRMNITTIANY o ‘!“ffll i fl':{l!”" JJNL TEIRN e ST MARKUS LUTHERAN CHUAGH shutting out the shoreline. Itwas shortly after 5 P. M., and nearly all the passengers were on deck, when suddenly there was a Butter of winssand the ship was invaded by a swarm of humming-birds. One lady was gazing out 10 sea and at the same time fondling a bunch of beauti- fal roses that had been given her two days previously in Victoria, B. C. The little wanderers swarmed down on the flowers, and soon each rose had a couple uf birds on it eagerly searching for honey. The hundreds of little fellows were raveno and attacked everything in sight. Every wi who had flowers in her bonnet was attacked, and the birds seemed to get angry when 'they found they had been fooled. Third Officer Thomas Hogan was the worst sufferer. At one time he had a bird perched on the lobe of h ear and a third on his mustache. 'y were poking their long bills into his ears and up his nostrils he nearly went frantic with the pain, and hid himself in the cap- tain’s cabin to escape his tormentors. W. 8. MacFarland of Oakland was an- other vic'im. He was promenading the deck with one of the lady passengers, and, hearing a gentle flutter, thought his com- panion had something to say to him. The next instant the hungry bird !.ad insertea its bill into his ear, and MacFarland, a few wo:ds in Gaeiic, made a becline for his cabin, not e waiting for a chance to apolozize to his companion. *It was the most pecuiiar experience I | ever had,” said Captain Wallace yester- | day. ‘“‘Those litile mites must have been | feeding along the shore, and when the fog fell they got lost and the wind blew them out to sea. Qur binnacle lamp and the loom of the shiv attracted them, and they swarmed aboard. It seems remarkable, however, that a bumming-bird should be able to cover eighteen miles without & rest. “Atone time there were twenty of the Inttle fellows in my room, and I have four of them still. If I offered them moist sugar in my open hand they would not touch it, but if I putitin my mouth and held my tand under my chin they would perch on it and revel in the sweet stuff. Every one of the passengers had three or four of the littie feliows and the ship’s | eat secured one, but tae sailor’s quickly rescued it. When abreast of Point Reyes I ran the vessel close inshore and all the litile beauties were set at liberty. All ex- cept four made tor the shore, and in a few minutes were safe on terra firma. The four in_question came back to my room after circiing around for a whiie and they are there now. If they are alive when I £0 to the ship to-day 1 will take them out to the park and set them at liberty.” The littie birds are of a beautiful green plumage, while on the throat isa small bunch of feathers that glistens like molten gold. Their invasionof the Walla Walla will supply a topic of conversation for the passengers for months to come. Furnitare Moved. Estimates furnished. Responsible, reliabla and reasonable.
