Stanford Hall in the Alcazar, which is the meeting-place of Cslifornia Council No. 530 of the Nations! Union, was converted into a mokebouse” last Wednesday night on the oceaston of “a smoker” given lo members and friends—one of the events given €VEry now and then by this progressive council to relieve the monotony of routine business. The hall was crowded, and those who were present were entertained with an excellent Pprogramme got up under the supervision of T J. Harris, H. L. Tickner, J. R. McCuffick and C. Ji. Van Orden, the commiltee on entertain- ment. There was & shortaddressof weicome Dy Secretary Charles J. Kine, master of core- monies, after which C. R.Morse of Berkeiey sang “Rosy O'Grady” and then gave comic recitations which convuised the sudience witn laugiter. J. N. Buat- ing, special deputy and secretary of the cabinet, gave figures to explain the Workings of the order. which showed that the graded assessment plan upon which 1t works ix tha only safe one, which, he asserted, is b ing adopted by older beneficiary organiza- tions that have discarded the level assexsmeat plan. L. 8. Carter and Mr. Walsh favored wih selections on the mandolin and guitar, guitar and coucertinn, guiiar and xylophore and a duot on the “kazno.” E. C, Boysen sang 50.0, after which Treasurer H. L.Tickner told of the progress of the council, which numbers 254 members, and expressed the hope that it mey soon reach the 300 mark. During the evening four candidates were ob- lizated and twenty-three upplications were presented for admission into what the inviia- tton 1o the smoker declared 10 be “California Counctl, the only peach in the orchard.” Independent Order of Forester: Court Seal Rock gave an informal reception 1o Court Southern Heightson Monday éven- ing, the 5ih inst., st wh ch the Oriental team from Court Southern Heights conferred the Oriental degree on a uumber of caudidates from various courts in the City. After the ampressive ceremounies had been concluded musical selections were rendered by visiting brothers, and refreshments were served. High Vice-Chief Ranger CharlesS.
