* ciated Industries. In . prevented the 12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 1897 e o PURE FOOD THE RALLYING CRY Stricter Enforcement of the Law of the State in Demand. Annual Meeting of the Manufac- turers’ and Producers’ Asscciation. Directors Elected and a Strong Reso- lution Adopted — President Sonntag R-tires. A resolute determination to prosecute the pure-food crusade by every leginmate method was the most frequently expressed and dominating sentiment of the Manu- facturers’ and Producers’ Association at its annual meeting yesterday. President Julian Sonntag referred to the subject in his opening address as one of the most satisfactory indications of the associa- tion’s activity, and the unanimous feeling of the meeting embodied itself in the fol- lowing resolution, which was presented by Isidore Jacobs and adopted without debate: WHEREAS, The prosperty of the producers and de.ers in the food produets of the State of California largely cepends on the purity of f00d produced or manu ed _in this State; £nd wherens, the sale a; ribution of such food products is depe both within and without this State upon the confidence of the purchusing public in the genuinenessand pur- ity of such foody and food products; and whereas, the public bealth, a matter of far greater importence, is dependent largely on the purity of ail foods; and whereas, all of the above sadvantages would be greatly fathered by the enforcement of the so-called re-food law of this State and by satisiying the world that adulteration of food in this State would be severely puzished; and where- ss, the Board of Health is endeavoring to carry out the said laws, with the iargest amount of practical resuits, and in such exe- cutlon and_ enforcement of the law it is likeiy to find many practical difficulties; and where- ss, the good faith and right purpose of the Board of Health in 1ts actions heretofore in this congection are recognized and appreci- d and approved, and meet with and will re- ceive tne hearty Co-operation of the Manu- facturers’ and Producers’ Association of this | Cit ; therefore be it Resolved, By this annual meeting of the Mau- ufacturers and Producers’ Association that we will use every means in our power 10 assist the Board of Healtn in the carying out and in the enforcement of the said law, beileving, as we do, that the enforcement of the same means Detter health to our communityand the build- ing up of the industries of our State. Resolved further, That invitations be ex- teuded to &il commercial bodles throughou: the State 10 send delegates to the Pure-food Congress to be held under the auspices of this organigation on Friday, April 30, at the Cham- ber of Commerce. The resignation of President Sonntag was reluctantly accevted by the associa- tion vesterday, and his successor will be elected this afternoon by tue new board of directors. The most popular candidate for the vacant position is James W. Kerr, and it is expected tbat his appointment will be accepted without opposition. The new board of directors named yesterday consists_of the following gentlemen: James W. Kerr, L. R. Mead, J. P. Currier, M. J. Ke. Frank L Brown, I Jacobs, Charles R. Allen, A. Svarboro, W. F. Bow- ers, A. McLaughlin, Samuel McKee. The new board formaily ratified the proceedings of the annual meeting and adjourned until this afternoon, when both 8 president and the rest of the officers of the association will be elected for the en- suing year. In reviewing the work accomplished during bis incumbency President Sonniag stated that the board of direciors met thirty times, both in regular and speciag meetings. The fair held in conjunction with the Mechanics’ Institute was the most largely attended one in the history of San Francisco, 300,000 persons having viewed the exhibits. The association had also been taking up a good deal of legisia- tive work, and had been the means of sup- pressing many obnoxious ‘‘cinch’ bulls, in conjunction with the Council of Asso- the event of the Governor giving Iits consent the day was not far distant when California products, price and quality being equal, would be used in all Siate institutions. ““We have also endeavored to secure the passage of a measure known as the South- wick bill through the House of Repre- sentatives,” continued Mr. Sonntag, “which will stop the importation of con- vict-made goods into the State of Caii- fornia. 1tisa well-known fact that goods to the value of miilions of dollars have come here from Eastern penitentiaries. Unfortunately under the ruling of the Speaker of the House the Soutbwick bil was nova privilege bill, and it is, therefore, the hope of this association 10 reintroduce that measure, if not during the extra se: sion during the regular session of Con- gress. “Through our influence we have also State Board of Prison Di- Tectors from employing the prisoners in any other work except rock-crushing and the manufacture of jute bage. This asso- ciation was also the first organization in the ‘State which took up the pure-food quesiion and directed the attention of our citizens to the great amount of impure | goods which irresponsibie manufacturers were dufhping upon our markets. goods included hundreds of tons of jellies, jams, etc., almost untit for human com- sumption. At last we have a Board of Health determined to prosecue the of- fenders vigorously, and we have done our best to assist it. California possesses vast resources, but the fruit industry has been almost killed, owing to the introduction of these impure foods. If we can only stop adulteration and compel our* own manufacturers, as well as those in the East, to live up to the laws of the land, our products will find markets through- out the cifilized world.” Isidore Jacobs moved a vote of thanks to the retiring president, which was eagerly accorded, and James W. Kerr spoke appreciatively of Mr. Sonntag's able services, The meeting afierward adjourned. THURSTON IS FREE. But the Man He >hot At Is Sentenced to Pay a Small Fine. Jacob L. Thurston, charged with assanlt to murder, was tried in Judge Carroll Cook’s court yesterdsy. He was accom- panied by his wife and child. In bis defense Thurston said that he was intoxicated and did not remember having fired a shot. The jury returned a verdict of not ghilty. Mrs. Thurston wept tears of joy and kissed her husband. An amusing incident, which turned out unpleasantly for George H. Pettis, the complaining witness, occurred during the morning session. While Pettis was giving his testimony, one of the jurors asked bim what he did with the pistol that was on him’at the time of the assault. Here it is,” he responded, suiting the action to the word and drawing a loaded weapon from bis hip-pocket. This caused a sen<ation, and Judge Cook ordered Bailiff T. F. Whelan to iake the pistol from the wiimess, remarking inci- dentally that Pettis was guilty of cor tempt of court and would have the privi- Jege of paying $20 fine. . “But I nave a permit to carry the gun,” said Pettis, instantly producing that docu- ment, These | ;" Room 20, 126 Fourth st. armed into the presence of this court, and especially when appearing as a wijness. You had no right to bring the pistol her and you should nct have drawn it in the presence of the court in that manner,” re- plied Judge Cook. It was in vain that Pettis declared his ignorance of the law in this regard. The court would not change the order, but Pettis may take his time to pay, as there is no penalty attached if he fails'to do so. SAN FRANCISCO **CALL."
