14 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17 1897 BREATHED, ONLY 10 BF STRNGLED A Baby’s Bedy Found in the Bushes in Golden Gate Park. Its D-ath Was Caused by As- phyxiation Produced by Compression. The Infant Is B:lieved to Hav: Been Killed by the Cruel Hinds of Its Parents. A case of infanticide, the murder of a baby that had scarca seen the light of day, was discovered in Golden Gate Park yes- terday afternoon. Early in the afternoon a number of children were playing in the park, near Stanyan and Bulia streets, when they | found & common barley sack in the | bushes. The opening of the bag was tied | by a piece of twine. Curiosity prompted | the youngsters to untie the cord and peep in. They were norrified to discover the body of a little naked baby. In less than a minute the children were out of the park and hurrying to inform the police. Officer J. W. Durkin investigat- | ed and found thatthe children’s story was correct. He telephoned to the Coroner, and Deputy Hallett and Messenger Smith went for the body. Krom all appearances | the person or persons who deposited the Lody there must have dropped the bundle over the fence during the night. It was just inside of the park fence close to the point where the steam cars turn out of | Stanyan street on the way to the ocean beach. Dr. John Gallagher mada an autopsy on the body and his investiga:ion led con- clusively to tue belief that the little one had been murdered soon after its birth, Dr. Gallagher said: *‘The body is that of 8 male chiid s few hours old. It wasalive | once, for its little lungs had been expan- ded with air. Its death was causea by | asphyxiation produced by compression, I should judge. T are no marks on the throat to show that it was stified to death. | The compression was most likely that of squeezing the body over the lungs so that they could not move. Such treatment to | a child ¢b young would produce death very speedily and leave no marks of violence. | This infart might have been smothered to | death, but I believe that compression was | the cause.” | As soon as the police learned the nature | of the case an inquiry was set on foot amone the residenis of that partof the City, but no one had seen anybody there who bad carried a barley sack.” It is| likely that the unnaturai parents took such an hour for the commission of this foul crime and the disposing of the body that their identity will never be known. It is also likely that the murder was com- mitted in some other part of the City and by persons who live a long distance from the park. IMPALEMENT OF THE BONNRT. A Painfol and Excting Incident of a New York Raiustorm. They were talking of the variety of queer little incidents which the streets of New York have to offer for the daily entertain- | ment of the idle but observing pedestrian. | “Why, i's a regular continuous per- formance, if you enly keep your eyes open and look about you,” concluded the man whose “reminiscences’”” had made him easily the stsr narrator of the party. “Indeed, I believe you,” remarked the liitle woman in the corner, who up to that point had contented herself with listening to the stories of the others. *I believe | you, because T wis in one act of it mysell yesteraay on Twenty-third street. I as- sure you that I am not particularly proud of the part I played, but then I did it purely from necessity, not choice. “When I siarted out to shop that after- noon the sky was periectly clear, but in about an hour it came on to rain very | suddenly, and I was caught without an umbrella. I had a new bonnet on, too— one of those tiny things, you know, made mostly of jet and lace, and barely Testing on the top of my head. It didn’teven bave strings to hold it on. Well, I was hurrying along as fast as possibie, my sole idea being to get that bonnet under the | sheltering roof of the nearest store, when, | happening to glance a little distance abead of me, I saw somet.ing which fairly paralyzed me with astonishment. I stood still for a_moment, unwilling tv believe my eyes. But there was no mistake. “There was my cherished bonnet, which I had believed to be perched securely upon the top of my head, dangling from the rib of a man's umbreila, several yards | away. Worst of all, the owner of the umbreila, blissfully unconscious of his ridiculous ‘carch,’ was_striding rapidly | slong through the rain, increasing at | every step the distance between me and my 1ll-iated properiy. There was only one thing to be done, and it was clear to me that it must be done quickly, too. Picking up my_skirts, I ran after that man at top speed. I must have been an impressive object, in my bedraggled and hailess condition, but I had no time to think of that then. When I finally reached him, I caught at his sleeve and managed (0 gasp out: * “Oh, sir—excuse me—but you've got my bonnet!" “He turned, and judging from the ex- ppression on his face, I ima ine he was quite as much surprised as I had been a wminute or two before, He was a dignitied old gentleman with kind-looking blue eyes. our bonnet, madam? I—have—your —bonnet?’ he repeated slowly, emphasi ingeac word, as if to make sure that he bad heard me right. *“‘It’s caught on your umbrella,’ I ex- plained, feeline my face getting redder every moment; ‘you must bave picked it right up from my head as you passed me, bat I never felt it at all.” “But this time we were both laughing beardly over the absurdity of the sffair, but L can tell you it will be a lesson to me. Never again will I go out until I bave fastened my hat securely to my lLiead by every means known to women.” —New York Tribune, —————— An Egyptian Sunset. In most tropical countries cudden dark- ness after_sundown is one of the pecu- liarities. In Egyptat certain seasons of the year the sun zoes down and darkness conies on very suddenly, continuing for a spece of twenty minutes or balf an bour. Then, all of a sudden, the hills and sends take on a ghastly paleness, and in another moment everythinz bezins to_brighten, and it appears as if the sun is about to rise out of th west, LATESL BuiPeriNu INLolLicssUs, Arrived.
