FIBER CULTURE N CALIFORNIA the Data Produced by S‘ate Development Committee. A College of Commerce Advo cated for the State University. W. H Murray, Founder of the San Francisco Journal of Commerce, Makes Suggestions. An important meeting of the State Development Committee was held at their the Mills building yesterday. W. M. Bunker presided at the meeting, whici was called to discuss the proposition of iber culture in California, and the estab- ment of a coliege of commerce at the State University. In reviewing the works of the past eight months, the chairman stated that ample demonstration had been made of the fact that fiber culture and the manufacture in- : | to articles of the raw material in tnis | State is entirely praciicable. Among the facts cited were the follow- ing In 300,000 pe 1894 San Francisco ds of twines and netting, all nz the product of flax. Farmers pay annually over $250,000 for sack twines and fish canneries over §300,000 for netting nes. The S0C0 bales of cotton yearly consumed by the cotton-milis of the State all come from Texas and New Orleans. In 1894 over 19,000 pounds of flaxseed, used in the manufacture of linseed oil, was imported, and 31407 pounds of flax and hemp yarns. The speaker also asserted that a promi- n business man of this City has im- ported from Scotland machinery for the manufacture of flax, twines, nemp and ramie. Assoon ss the raw material can be turnished it will be put into operation. A bill was introduced in the Legisiature by Frank L. Coombs, speaker of the As- sembly, after having been indorsed by the various bodies composing the Council of Associated Industries, tending to bring together the various department of the business so as to make them a success, but it was found to conflict with a bill pre- sly introduced for the benefit of the T niversity of California and withdrawn. tw The committee has, however, urged upon | the regents of the university the impor- tance of establishing a devartment to carry out the purposes outlined by the committee. A resolut on has been intre- duced by Reuent Arthur Rodgers which covers the matter nicely. The following resolution was offered by Mr. Rich and adopted unanimously: Resolved, That this committee earnestly re- quest the Board of Regents of the University of California 1o prompily take such measures it may deem wise 10 er the fiber indus- California, a at we pledge the cupport of the State Development Com- hey may any plans In speaking on the suhject, W. H. Mur- ray, founder of the San Francisco Journal of Commerce, said: ‘Mr. Rodgers’ resolution, offered before the Board of Resents, meets with my heartiest approval. A colleze of com merce for the State Univer y is a time. suggestion. It could co-operate in duties with the College of Mining and th College of Agriculture, thus benefiting in common the mining and farming indus- tries and commercial and other trades. “San F; co should have factories, not only er culture, but_ for tobacco and iinplate. Special reports could be made, samples of articles of commercial value placed on exhibition. and the devel- opment following would eive employ- ment to our mechanics, tend to buiid up our cities d make a good demand for our horticuitural and agricultural prod- ucts. Two Chinese murder cases are on trial in the Superior Court, one i Judge Dunpe’s department and another in the department presided over by Judge Troutt. As these courts are directly facing each other in tie Larkin-street wing of the new City Hall, the corridors thereabouts are crowded with natives of the Flowery Kingdom, giving the place the appearance of the United States Marshal's office in the Appraiser’s buildin: after the arrival of a steamer from the Orient, Lee Ab Lung, who has several alias | name- attached to him in the official in- formation, is being deiended by Attorney John E. Richards before a_jury in Judge Dunne’s court. For the State there is quite anarray of talent. Deputy District Attorney Walter Hinkle is assisted by | lawyers M. M. Foote and C. B. Darwin. Wong Long was the first witness for the prosecution. He testifiea that he saw Luey shoot Ang An Chang on the 6th of last October.
