14 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10, 1897 10 EUROPE FOR LITTLE MONEY William B. Gross on the Fun He Had for $350 | | It Beat a Thirty-Five Hundred Doliar "Trip All to Pieces. Traveled First Class on the Steamers and Stopped at Hotels Every. where Except in London. Among the arrivals at the Baldwin Ho- tel is William B. Gross, manager for James A. Herne and author of the book, “Europe for $350,” which has attracted a good deal of attention. Mr. Gross was | formerly manager for Eleanor Duse. | He came here first with the elder Sal- vini, and at one time and another has had | many interesting experiences. He ia en- | thusiastic in his praise of the genius of Eleanor Duse, and thinks she i3 the great- | est woman living. Talking about the book with the novel | title and the story it narrates of travel in | foreign lands for so smalla sum of money, he said the account was literally true. “I made the trip for $350," he said, | “and took in the most interesting of the | countries beyond the ocean, doing it all | in three months, I afterward made the | same trip for 0, and didn’t have balf s0 much fun, eitaer, but the last time I did not pay the expenses. I was private | secretary for & man who had lots of | money, and he footed the bill 5 “But on this first trip, soberly and se- riously I had everything I wanted. Ivisited Belgivm, Germany, France, England and | Scotland. I traveled first class on the steamers and first, second and third class | on tue railroads. 1 lived in botels every- | where except in London, where I lived in | & boarding-house. 1 was three weeks in | Paris and two weeks in London and spent a day or two at a time, or even a few days, at other interesting places. i “My route was this: From New York to Antwerp, thence to Brussels and then to Cologne. From there I went up the Rhine to Rudesheim, thence to Weisbaden and | from there to Frankfort, Heidelberg, | Sirassburg and Constance. Thence I pro- ceeded to Robr-ach, in Switzerland; thence to St. Ga'l and thence to Zurich. hen 1 ascended Mount Rigi 1o its top, and going down on the other side crossed | Lake Lucerne to Lucerne. From there my | course led to Milan, to Verona, Venice, Padua, Florence, Rome, Naples and Pom- peii. From Pompeii I returned to Rome and went from there to Pisa, Genoa and | Turin. Going turough the Mont Cenis tunnel, 1 proceeded to Aix-les-Bains, to| Paris and then to London. he traveler should make up his mind that he is geing to be inconvenienced daily,” he said, d he will be surprised how comfortably he cau live abroad. The bes' thing to dc to follow the customs of the country he is visiting. I iound I need not hesitate to ask questions, for I | invariably received polite answers, If an American can let it be understood he is a German he will travel a great deal cheaper, | for the Germans are known as the most | members of equoia No. 1t0, of this City. In their | economical travelers in Europe. Further- | more, they are thought fully as much of | as any otber nation. “SiX to eight week and French before going sbroad is advis- able, and in that time one can learn | enough of both to enable him to get along | pretty fairly.” FRATERNAL FELLOWSHIP. An Interesting Mecting of Sequoia Par- lor of t Native Sons—The yal Arcanum. 1, one of the mostactive of the Native Soms of the Golden West and | the ore among the local parlors which hes the reputation of having the largest average attendance at esch meeting, had an eventful time in Yosemite Hal!, Nauve Sons’ building, last Monday night. In the presence of a large membership it initiated six candidates in due | form, and after the close of the parlor the de- e team of the Exalted Order of Nincom- | Poops took charge of the hall and guarded the | outer portals while they went through their wonderful, ¢ rating and highly instruc- tive ceremony of initiating a candidate into | the mysteries of the order. ix members, attired in long flowing robes of crimson silk ornamented with jewels and | lace of great valueand wearingstrange shaped | hoods and having their faces partly concealed | by helf masks and beards, entered the hall in | which the giare of the brilliant ligathad been subdued, 124 by High Polential Nincompoop Johin Griff, to the s;und of brass ius.rumenis that were recovered from some of the buried cities of the Orient. In a silent manner the | sextet proceeded to build an altar and to lay | upon tne floor a carpet of Mississippi stik of | extraordinary design, constructed with a view | 10 instant removal irom its position by strong and willing hauds at some time durivg the ceremonies. The altar, hastily erected, was a wonderful | one, and 1ot fear (hat some one who was nota member of the order might be temoted to steal | it there was a string tu it. All being in readi- | ness, the high potential nincompoop calied the roll, ench member answering 1o his title | in phrases ciassic, but strange, that none but the fnitiated undérsiood. Then the candidate who had dared to express the opinion that he would like to solve the secreis of the great order wes marched into the hall, led by two attendants—for he was lind 1o the world, his eyes having been bandaged by a kerchief of | silk that had onece been worn by one of the | Orlental monarchs when taking the degrees in the days justafier the flood. Having an- swered a number of questions in & satisiectory manuer, he was led 1o the stauon of the high potential sub-nincompoop and initiated 1uto the first degree in & most impressive manner. So impressive was this that it will be a long time before he will forget the effect it pro- Guced upon him. Then he was led to the cloth of silk for the | second degree, which was & solemn lesson of the manner in which & young man by the aid of those ready 1o lend a heiping hand can rise in the world, and then the candidate wio had stood both tesis with remarkable fortitude and showed that he would not flinch in the hour of need was led to the high executioner, and by him conducted to the eitarand there given & lesson to show how & young men can 1all when there is a combination sgainst him, After that he was given the secret work, ihe Janguage of which is full of meaniug that the caudidate cannot forget, and thex he was noti fied toat it becume his life duty to find addi- tional canaidates for memoersuip and he promised that he would per.oza it. i Tuese ceremonies over, tne parlor was thrown oven and & programme presented. This was under the direction of President . A. White, und had been prepared by Louis M, Bannav, chairman of the good of the order commiites. There vas instrumental music Dy the Native Sous’ band, composed of mem- Ders of Sequoia Parlor, “‘Prolessor Souser,” | leader; vocuiization by M. Gamble, W. Fen- | stermacher, Joe Morrison and George Little, and a well-executed piano solo by Paul | Dunphy, the candidate of the Nincompoops. Ice-crenin, cskes, lemonade and pipes and tobacco were aistributed during the evening. study of German | Argonaut Council, Loyal Arcanum. Argongut Coancil of the Royal Arcanum gave its first ladies’ night on Monday in Co- Joma Hsli—that is, the first entertainment of the kind since it has occupied these quarters in the Native Sons’ building, into which it re- cenily moved. There was a large attendsnce of some of the best pe.ple of San Francisco’s rociety. A very entertaiuing programme, pre- pared by M. s de Rocco, Daniei Allen, Dr. H. G. MeGill, J. B. Whitney and Tnomas 0’ Brie was presented uuder the direction of Regent George W. Dixon, master of ceremonies. Tnere was an overture, then an address of welcome and brief logival address by the re- &eDi, explaining the object of the order, which | date has been set for next M | ofticers present d | April 22, Ker | ziven on ine now numbers more than 190,000 Miss E. Whitney played “The Polisn Dance” on the piano; Fred Head, who is posscssed of un- usually good elocutionary powers, recited “Spartacus” and “The Dand: Fifth”; John Braud sang & tenor solo, I Am Waiting"’; Pro- fessor Pilse gave piano selectons; Russell Lowery, & barstone, sang “The Heart Bowed Down”; and little Miss Brown seng with good effect, for one so young, Tiliie Taylor.” The programme closed with talks irom tbe grapho- phone, presented by Mr. Richardson and M. 5. de Roceo, they snowing how the machine is charged with the human voice and how it re- produces sound.
